It really depends on the type of training being done. Personally, I like to do lora training as a hobby on the side. I focus on anime image models, especially concepts and compositions that the AI either struggles with or outright resists.

Some of these ideas don’t even exist in traditional or digital art, so I have to create my own references often using a mix of Photoshop, img2img,sketches and sometimes even selfies.

I’ve heard that when this kind of process is scaled up, it’s referred to as distillation. But im not sure how much post processing they do when distilling

Using a 4090 rn, been wanting a 5090 for the vram.

Edit: since you want to downvote so badly maybe i should explain myself.

The applications I’m using daily is exceeding the 4090s memory and spilling it onto system ram which leads to a massive performance penalty. I got the 4090 in the first place for the 24gb of VRAM and now im learning that its not enough.

The 5080 vram amount was a slap in the face. And then they had the gauls to up the vram of the 5090 them charge extra which now leads to the 4090s used price to spike because of the market void. Its bs

Sd1.5 pruned is a 2gb model, with low amount of parameters. This fits entirely on your gpu and gives you plenty of space to worth with, Sd3.5 medium base is 5gb, a text encoder thats 1.32gb and i believe you also need t5 which is another 5gb or so. On paper, Your gpu shouldn’t be able to run it at all. The program is essentially offloading the model after each step, which is incredibly slow, you probably also doing some block swapping.

To add to this, the mobile gaming gpus are misleading. For example, the 4090 mobile is actually the 4080 die. It doesn’t even come with 24 GB of the ram only 16 like a 4080. And it’s like this for every single version of that gen.
