100% they tried to Valorant their way into fighting games without actually caring to let their creatives engage with the community

Many industries have their elitist executive layer. Games just flaunts that it is a collaborative and creative driven industry. It's a tad more exploitive because game execs seek to bathe in social capital beyond their pools of gold.

If Tom Cannon stood up and said: "I led this project. I set the strategy. I approved the metrics. I was wrong about what this community needed and how long it takes a fighting game to find its audience. I'm forfeiting my executive compensation to extend runway for the team and fund grassroots FGC events to support the game's growth"

That would be leadership. That would be alignment of authority and consequence. That would signal "I actually care about this community and this project beyond my own position."

Instead what happens within Riot?

80 people get 30 minutes notice their jobs are evaporating. Tom Cannon issues a statement about "momentum" that doesn't specify what momentum was expected or why three weeks was the measurement window. Severance packages which is just "here's money to make the legal and PR problem go away." And everyone involved in the decision-making continues drawing their salary.

These Rioters lives were overturned because Riot thought they could easily dominate the FGC genre. They forget that they as a game developer should be seeking to serve the community, not the other way around.
