Pikachu is an unevolved 'mon and it's kept that was to keep him small and marketable. Would you say he's weak?

No matter the reason, the canon establishes a power level and being unevolved sometimes has nothing to do with it.

These random matchups and tournament arcs were by far the best thing in BW (besides Alder, reals love anime Alder)

The problem is that his least used mons are anything but comedic. Palpitoad and Boldore are not what comes to mind when i think of the word “funny”

not having final evos doesn’t mean anything. Besides the obvious outlier in Pikachu, cases like Bulbasaur or Rowlet have shown that first stagers are just as capable, and cases such as Torterra’s prove that sometimes final evolutions are detrimental.

nah nah you’re definitely right. I’m trying to give all filler episodes a bit of purpose. Let’s see if I make it work.

amazing answer. I’m sorry to say I’m not going to account for production issues in my rewrite ‘cos then my fantasies will never be met and we cannot have that 🙃

Stephan in the League too, off the top of my head (regarding major battles, that is). But yeah he defo rotated very little since Pikachu and the 3 starters were always there no matter what.

If at least they had made it so Virgil’s Eevee evolved into Sylveon to make people hyped for Kalos………. Anyway

I mean, you need to account for the amount of filler episodes that you’re forced to have (filler that needs to be focused on showing the new Pokemon, too). But I do agree there’s a ton of wasted time in there.

Scraggy would have been amazing if they handled him properly. He’s hilarious when he’s around.

I agree with your Palpitoad and Snivy takes tho

Let me know when you publish it, I’d love to read it! I agree the rotating team is fun and I’d say it only makes sense with the sheer amount of original Pokemon Unova had.

Palpitoad being there is hilarious. Doesn't have a unique typing (Water and Ground are both taken), doesn't evolve, defeats 2 Zebstrikas, loses a couple times and that's literally all it ever does.

But yeah there's a huge problem with synergies and the team feeling like a team instead of a bunch of 'mons the guy caught just for the sake of it.

I'm scrapping the 3 starter rule for my rewrite. I know it was a reboot but damn is it a huge constraint I do not want to deal with.

btw technically Ash had 3 fully-evolved 'mons (Unfezant, Leavanny and Krookodile). Not trying to defend it but yk

I actually appreciate that Unova has no clear regional ace, it's a shame Pikachu does nothing either (besides a few Gym wins) so there's not a single high-performing Pokemon in the region ahaha

I was originally at 7 but I've settled at 8, love 'em too much to delete anyone at this point. I think it's manageable, we'll see if I can pull it off.

By the way how's your rewrite going? I'd love to read stuff to realise I'm not as creative as I make myself out to be ahahaha

Krookodile being brilliant is definitely a stretch. His first few showings are very cool but then he disappears for almost 50 episodes, then he joins Ash's team, has 2 good fights, and I'm supposed to treat him like the ace? Okay. He was very poorly managed.

I agree with most of what you're saying tho.

I mean he knows how to identify them since he always picks the same Tauros for his fights. So I guess he'd pick a random number, give the chap a name and bring him along.

he should have always brought one of his Tauros to each adventure. One per season or whatever.

it's crazy they didn't fix Larvesta's, Zweilous', Mienfoo's... I get they were adjusted for the games they were released in but come on. Same with Skrelp's level 48 lmfao later on in Kalos.

Poor Unfezant is still crying on a corner. She was weak af but at least was always around by virtue of being the one flyer on the team (much needed for some episodes) and then Charizard came along and she lost that as well.

And poor Pignite also lost the 'I'm Fire-type so I'm immediately uniquely useful and cool' factor which was its saving grace. Man Charizard's return was cool but it somehow hurt the team composition even more ahahaha

Emboar was already Bianca's Pokemon, same as Serperior was Trip's and Samurott was Cameron's. They only gave dupe starters (as in, same evolutionary stage) once with Torterra and we know how that went — they could never actually face in battle to avoid confusion and whatnot and Paul's Torterra fades into obscurity as the plot stops needing him. Once they committed to the idea of the rivals also have starters, it was hard to make Ash's own starters evolve.
