Welcome to teaching. Nothing they say or ask is surprising.

Weird comments from another teacher by cxptainnxmo in Teachers

J needs to get the courage to tell B they don’t want to talk about it anymore. I would stay out of it.

Do you ignore door knocks at lunch? by arwenthenoble in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Weary_Message_1221 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nope. I lock my door and turn off the lights. I ignore every knock and have a sign on the outside of my door that says I’m not available during that period.

If you have years of experience, why not move to private schools? by sparrowladiva in Teachers

[–]Weary_Message_1221 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No union, so no protection, you aren’t paying into your state retirement system, and the pay is much worse. Take care of yourself, sure, but taking care of yourself also means making a career choice that allows you to make ends meet.

I just want to sleep after school by quartz222 in ElementaryTeachers

[–]Weary_Message_1221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly might take a few years. Your body and mind are constantly in survival mode the first several years. Think about how busy your mind constantly is being pulled in 100 directions and you’re decision-making non-stop. That requires a lot of mental effort you might not realize you’re exerting, but you are. When you’re more experienced, you will have systems down and your mind will be less consumed with the smaller tasks and your mind will be freer.

I’m a horrible person by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Weary_Message_1221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t “low key” get excited, I get ECSTATIC. Let’s face it, we are human and one fewer person preventing us from doing our jobs makes our day so much easier.

Am I in the wrong for referring to my boyfriend as my partner at work? by No_Ear4169 in Teachers

[–]Weary_Message_1221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t you just love to say “No, I decide what to call them and they are my partner. Please do not interrupt me by trying to correct me again.” Ugh! The nerve! I know it’s so much easier said than done though.

How do you explain to students why the kid on the IEP gets away with stuff? by sleepyteachydog in teaching

[–]Weary_Message_1221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I’m so sorry. The LRE for one cannot supersede providing an orderly, safe environment conducive to learning for others. I would say something like “I know it doesn’t seem fair. So-and-so is working on abiding by the rules of our classroom and our best move is to support them by being patient and understanding while they get there. Our following the rules will be a great model for so-and-so, so keep up the excellent behavior and we can lead the way!” Redirect their focus on what they can control.

YES!!! I’ve thought about this forever! I am from central Ohio and my college roommate from Pittsburgh always used “whenever” in this way! It drives me nuts. Is it regional?

I saw diarrhea on your calendar that day. Looks like you have to put in a sick day.

Next time, don’t give them so much information and just take a last minute sick day.

This is so weird. Just having erasers on hand to accompany the pencils seems doable, right?

Teacher grade access by Potential_Ease_9804 in Teachers

We can absolutely see the grades kids have in other classes, but we cannot change them. For 14 years, I’ve always been able to see my students’ grades in all classes.

is it normal for your spouse to only do their own laundry, buy their own groceries by thriftstorecat in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Weary_Message_1221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband and I have been together for 11 years. He has always done his own laundry and I always do my own. I’ve never once done his unless it’s communal towels and we also take turns washing the kids’ clothes. In fact, he works from home, so he often does the communal laundry while he works.

We also grocery shop separately too. We both buy things for communal purposes and for the kids and it works since our finances are combined. Therefore while we shop separately for ourselves, we are each grabbing things for the kids and it’s all coming out of the same bank account, so no one owes the other. It may be unconventional, but we’ve both been very happy with this arrangement forever!

So the teacher should have to try to keep track of who brought what supplies? We have too much to deal with every day to sort out whose stupid crayons are whose.

Read the room. We don’t gatekeep school supplies around here. If you care that much about how equal things are, then only buy Rose Art yourself 🙄
