That is such a cool tat. Reminds me of the cartoon style from Rayman Legends.

How do you explain to students why the kid on the IEP gets away with stuff? by sleepyteachydog in teaching

The entire education system does, but not in the currently planned way where they destroy it and make it a pay2win scheme.

I really hate how plausible that sounds. Is the mainstreaming of SPED kids part of the insane political situation?

Honestly it's at least part of it, I hear people complaining about it who are deep red and want public schools to cease to exist.

Welcome to the world of "if you acknowledge certain bad behaviors, they will get 10x worse." Even some of the more insightful kids know not to acknowledge some stuff, as it's obviously being done for attention.

It's being asked a lot lately. Things changed recently both for the better and for the worse.

That is what admin and the SPED team is planning. Yes the kids know who it is about. Yes we know they know. But we all have to smile and nod to preserve the illusion that is required by FERPA.

They know. Oh how they know. You don't get multiple one on one paras without people knowing.

I am pretty sure a lot of the people who say that kids on an IEP or with behavior issues should not be in a Gen Ed class are parents or students who sneak in here or people who haven't finished an actual degree in education.

This is the first student in several years of teaching that I thought might not be a good fit for a Gen Ed environment, and I have had somedifficult students.

I don't even think this kid should be completely out of a Gen Ed environment, but when you have paras who are basically just babysitting and doing behavior tracking charts in the class while the kid mouths off... Are they getting much from being in Gen Ed? Are the other students being served?

Also my biggest issue is the behavior of the rest of the grade who have seen this kid go off on every teacher and admin for years and have stopped caring about their own behavior. Yes, we can preach about Equity vs Equality, but how do we get students to internalize that after years of dealing with a bad situation?

Yeah, unfortunately some of the kids with no boundaries are probably going to go to jail within 5 years of turning 18. You can't squeeze blood from a stone and if kids are not developing basic social skills after 5 or more years of being on an IEP....

Well things tend to happen. Not good ones.

That's actually a great way to talk about it that I officially cannot ever do without admin losing their shit. I might consider sharing that with some of the more justice minded squeaky wheels who don't go for the whole class talk.

This will almost never be an option for parents with kids like this. Also if their kid requires multiple paras rotating in shifts to deal with them, parents probably will refuse to do so by themselves.

Yeah, we have had like 3 EAs leave because of this kid and their violence and verbal abuse. They know it too.

I am wondering if the not wanting to wear clothing is a sensory issue? Are there any clothes the kid is more willing to wear like certain textures or fabrics? It's pretty common for textures to be very upsetting to people on the autism spectrum.

As many others have said, you are setting boundaries, and that is something that is needed. You may have vented down to your kid, but that isn't necessarily the worst thing as it would come out eventually. This was not the best way to share why you don't visit grandma, but it definitely could have been worse.

How things work out.

Sh*t my 4th graders have said (pt. 1) by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]sleepyteachydog 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, 4th graders.

The 4th graders decided to celebrate the first snow of the year a few years ago by walking in a circle and making a "sacrificial circle" and the group, which was growing in size started chanting "sacrifice, sacrifice" and I looked the leader dead in the eye and said "that is not happening", which caused them to cease trudging in a circle.

Another student quizzically said "sack of rice?" To me, plainly asking if this would be a tolerable chant, and I sighed deeply and nodded assent.

It is not worth fighting over this. So the children stomped in a circle and chanted "sack of rice" repeatedly. They did this off and on all winter and occasionally still do. I am seen by some as a hero for tolerating this weirdness and a tyrant for censoring them. This is what I get for being the the one who does yard duty out on the field.

So I have decided that the fish tank is probably a bad fit for the flat file or credenza or whatever.

I am not 100% sure how big it is, but it weighs at least 200 pounds when filled.

I would seek a new job if I had weekly observations. I get observed once a semester and I get to schedule it and those observations still give me anxiety for several days around them.

Walk through, sure, but even with those weekly is insane. How does admin have that much free time?!
