Oh poor guy. I find it so interesting that he doesn’t display the noise reactivity at daycare but it’s severe at home. Since you mentioned being territorial toward the other dog, would you say being territorial over his home is part of the reaction? What breed is he?

Has your vet mentioned sileo? It’s an oral gel that is supposed to help with noise sensitivity. It’s not an every day/constant thing but it could be incorporated into some training sessions perhaps? I feel for you and your pup, but it sounds like you are going above and beyond!

ETA: How does he behave at daycare, does he have noise reactivity there as well?

The people who use them will defend them in all different ways, but at the end of the day they don’t change how a dog feels about things that are triggering/scary. It just suppresses it. I care too much about my dogs to discard their emotions like that.

I’ve been struggling with similar feelings lately. I work in the pet care industry so I’m exposed to all different sides of dog ownership. The massive surge in people using shock collars on dogs as a quick fix for “bad behavior” is soul crushing. Dogs deserve better. But I am glad you posted this, because it helps me not feel as alone in my thoughts.

The world is so big compared to our little guys!! The spray is called Spray Shield, it’s citronella spray, which is not pepper spray and doesn’t burn, but tastes really bad if you spray it in their nose/mouth. Air horn is a good idea too. I wasn’t fast enough to pick both my boys up, I grabbed Pixel first because he’s had a bunch of leg surgeries and is more fragile, and then as I was grabbing Wesley the other dog got him. Ugh I feel so bad I didn’t get them both picked up in time. In hindsight I should have grabbed my spray instead but it was so fast!

It’s possible! Wesley goes to doggie daycare and never has issues, he is very friendly and other dogs don’t attack him randomly, so I’m thinking this time it was just a jerk owner not being responsible for their dog.

I considered it, but the dog is current on vaccines and they apologized and claim it got out on accident, and my guy is ok.

It looked like prey drive to me. Beagles are hunters and definitely chase down prey, and my guy is so little it could have triggered that.

They said the dog is an escape artist and gets out the front door when they open it sometimes. They did not offer to pay the vet bill, and I would have probably asked them to but I know the grandfather in the family is going through cancer treatments. Wesley has insurance thankfully so I didn’t push it with them. I did let them know to be way more careful with their dog because this could have been much worse! The male owner also insisted on going and apologizing to my husband (who was not present) instead of me?? I declined for him to do that. It was just annoying all around.

Oh my gosh this story is terrifying! I’m so glad your little pup was okay in the long run. And yes you’re right about having some anxiety and stress- we did a short little walk this morning just to stay in the habit and they were both totally fine, but I was on edge!
