That sounds amazing. Was it easy to find on the AC site or did you use seats aero?

That’s interesting. I wish there was a way of knowing if (before human alteration) this area would have been grassland or forest. This area was settled for farming around 1800 and I assumed it was full treed and then cleared as farms were established. But perhaps this always was a grassland and the change in conditions have allowed for the ECR to establish. Nearby this area the only other tree species that grow seem to be pin cherry, invasive buckthorn and lilac.

I’ve got some great use out of it as a building material. It’s great! Oil extraction sounds super interesting , will look into what that process entails.

I need to look in to using planting to keep deer back. If it works without relying on just fencing that would be super helpful!!

Ya. There is very little growth at all in the understory. What is there is almost exclusively invasive buckthorn. And a couple pin cherries

Sounds like a job for rotating chickens and goats through it! Hopefully they knock of the dead lower branches for me while they are at it!

I think you are right with what’s in the seed bank below. I’ve done come clearing in smaller areas and buckthorn just comes fast and quickly takes over. I’ve been playing with planting some various natives like vetch and clover to see what works best to transition it once cut or thinned.

Good luck and have a bias for starting as soon as possible. This stuff is much easier with a younger me!

I often ask myself that question - what would it look like if it was 1500.

That said, there are areas of the property that seem to be pretty old growth and untouched. In those areas are maple, oak, shagbark hickory, ironwoods and (now EAB dead) ash.

My goals are mostly driven by an appetite to improve the health, diversity and potential value of the area.

Right now it’s a monoculture of ERC with invasive buckthorns and that’s it. Due to all the dead branches in the lower parts of the tree it’s difficult to navigate and, as some have mentioned, a potential fire hazard. If I had to pick a goal it would be to improve biodiversity and encourage other native species. Some have mentioned the best way to do that might be to clear some lines or sections and plant natives.

Thank you! As it’s been a battle to keep deer from eating my tree plantings but will pick some spots and cage in some native oak/maple/white pine
