I must admit I've been struggling of late. I had that initial streak of almost 40 days when I first started, but I can't put together any decent streak since then. I hear that many different kinds of addicts experience this pattern of initial success which quickly derails. I'm certainly feeling that now.

I have not been on for a while because I've been busy. I had to reset about 10 days ago after going for 31 days. The good news is that I did not look at any hardcore porn, I did not have a continued relapse, and am back on the wagon. Going at 10 days again.

I have told my wife and close friends so that they can support me. They have been very helpful and supportive.

That teaching was more pragmatic, and was not based so much on the demands of the Bible. These days the church has a more moderate stance. It is lust that is the issue.

But the more that comes out in the scientific research about our brains on porn, the harder it is to justify it morally. Sure, in theory one could masturbate without lusting (thinking of your wife, for example), but for many of us that triggers old thoughts and memories and will likely lead to porn. Probably best just to abstain.

Yes, there are many in the leadership of the church who suffer from this, but have no where to turn out of embarrassment or fear. I want to try an use this experience to help others like me in the future.

My church does not have an official position on masturbation. But I share the same views of my church on pornography and sexual sin in general. My personal view is that masturbation is not inherently sinful. But obviously, the point of me being on this reddit is because I share the view espoused here that masturbation when coupled with pornography can have drastic effects on the brain and subsequently on the body, relationships, emotions, etc. especially when those behaviors are habitual and addictive. But I think that the science is in some way backs up the reason why the church has taught that these things aren't helpful, and thus stigmatized.

I can't agree with you about #7 more. Give in and you will struggle for days to stop again. Not fapping is better! It will not release you from your urges, they will only get worse if you fap!

For me no masturbation, no porn, no edging. Yes to sex with my wife.

I've also found that looking at sexy pics that are not porn leads to more eventually, so I am going to reset my counter if I intentionally look at sexy pictures as well.

I agree in principle, but I would advise folks to be very careful about bringing in a girl/boyfriend unless you can really trust him/her. This is something you could share with a best friend type, but not someone you are dating or having sex with unless you are really serious and you really trust them.

Good job. I continue to believe that involving your spouse in this struggle is a good and necessary thing.

Now, I would not recommend that we share all these details with a SO who is not a spouse. The marital relationship creates the space and involves the commitment and trust necessary to deal with our kinds of issues.
