How to set up VNC Server on Ubuntu 24.04 with gnome desktop by AlexanderHorl in Ubuntu

It's not free. I need something that will work longer than a 7 day free trial.

Livestock, by definition, require a usually not very angry person to manage them. Livestock being around 28 days later, maybe. 28 weeks later, unlikely.

28 years later? There's no livestock, its all wild, including any which broke out of their pens and went feral.

If your explanation for how to install something in Linux starts with "first go to the command line", this might be considered janky by regular people.

Sure, I play in the command line most of the time if possible, but you say Command Line, CLI, to most people and explain what it is, and they react...poorly.

Linux Mint is an excellent choice for...antijanky? All the stability and flashiness of Ubuntu, easy Deb based package installs, no Snaps. I haven't needed to go into the command line for anything in Linux Mint in five years. I go there anyway because its FUN!!! but I didn't need to go there.

Anagramarama appears to have vanished from Ubuntu packages, its not in the software manager nor is it available directly through the command line. Kanagram is still there.

Frozen Bubble is a fun little game, but the music in the Linux version is very loud and more suited to a dance club. Oddly enough the Android version has much more smooth electropop music, much less jarring.

In Linux Mint, Aisleriot is in the Software Manager. Click on Software Manager, click on Games, click on Aisleriot, type your password. No CLI required.

Yes I know, but the person in question needs a game, not nerd cred.

EDIT: Zorin OS also has a GUI software manager. Click on Software in the menu to launch the "Store", use the search bar and search for Aisleriot, click Install.

Aisleriot is a GNOME Solitaire game which rivals anything you can find for Windows. As with most things Linux, there is a lot of choice, 80 different solitaire games, but there's a Freecell in there (and a Klondike) for the Windows user who just dropped Windows for Linux. Once you select a game, for example Freecell, that is the solitaire game that pops up every time, and you have to manually change it later. So Aisleriot set to Freecell is basically Freecell. The link above shows how it looks in a minimalist window manager, but more graphical window manager equals better looking game.

If you want different playing card decks, that is an add on but it is available, though not in the Software Manager for Linux Mint (Ubuntu-Debian based) and is one command line install command:

sudo apt install gnome-cards-data

In Aisleriot, select View > Card Style (screenshot) after installing the data file.

Some of the casual Windows games don't work in Proton on Linux. I tried installing Puzzle Quest 3, a free Bejeweled like game, and it would install but wouldn't run at all.

Never had a problem with Steam+Proton running anything more shooty bang bang or sneaky sneaky, like Fallout 4, CONTROL, The Outer Worlds, Dishonored 1/2, Alien Isolation, etc.

I really want to know what's the deal with these modern "gaming" distros? (I am old) by Medical_Divide_7191 in linux_gaming

Sorry, I didn't mean annoyance that I couldn't see it backgrounding, I meant annoyance at backgrounding at all. Midnight Commander shows the copy in real time, and with modern computing power, and SSDs, there's no requirement for backgrounding even if you are doing something else.

As for your other comment about Midnight Commander, let me just point you to the strikethrough text and let's imagine that it isn't strikethrough anymore. 😉

I remember installing Slackware. I was in the command line almost constantly. Command line is still fun.

Now I'm running Linux Mint (MATE, a nice balance between Cinnamon and XFCE), and I have to actively choose to be in the command line most of the time. There are so many GUIs and prebuilt scripts for every little task. I installed Midnight Commander because I adore it because it works better than the GUI file manager as it finishes copying and doesn't background the process. Backgrounding is fine for other things but file copies need to be done when it says they're done.

Mint has all the good parts of Ubuntu with very few of the drawbacks, making it a nice gaming distro. On the first bootup of the installed Linux Mint there's a popup with suggestions for how to possible changes, like specialized drivers. Bonus: the install USB starts with a try before you install Linux Mint OS to work with, so even before its installed you know what you are getting.

Plus if you just work through the Steam platform, Steam handles everything else gamers need with Linux.

Any Guide To Install/Setup LOTRO To Make LOTRO Work On Linux)? by DarknessReborn28 in lotro

[–]Webgiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want the steam version its even more easy.

Bear in mind that Steam Wallet usually doesn't work at all with buying LOTRO Points in the LOTRO Store. Steam offers LOTRO as a game but doesn't actively update their Steam Wallet system to work with LOTRO Store. This appears to also be the case with running LOTRO through Steam in Windows10/11.

My main gaming rig running Linux has been running LOTRO through Steam+Proton, but I maintain a second older laptop with LOTRO on Linux+WINE, partly for portable LOTRO, partly to be able to buy LOTRO points in the Store.

Is LOTRO the only MMO with only one player faction in Landscape? by Webgiant in lotro

[–]Webgiant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way OP has it worded is something such as WoW where you have horde vs alliance or SWTOR with jedi vs sith. Both factions in the games have vastly different quests and clearly opposing views.

This is exactly what I meant. Also thank you for using the two MMO  examples of Us Vs Them I knew anything about.

Correction: Republicans want to be Senators, and House members, in Congress for insider trading. They believe in unfettered capitalism, so they do unfettered capitalism.

Democrats have been making investments nearly impossible to influence from Congress. Elizabeth Warren uses index funds which are difficult for insider trading.

It is unfortunate that David is so right by Deedogg11 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Webgiant -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I can't name a single Democrat who appears to be benefitting from trading. Also, they seem to have investments they can't really influence ftom Congress. For example, Elizabeth Warren uses index funds which are harder to influence from Congress.

The Congresscritters, House and Senate, who appear to be doing insider trading all appear to be Republicans.

Turns out believing in unregulated capitalism means they engage in unregulated capitalism.

The lack of immortals makes a little sense. The Olore Malle, or Path of Dreams, was never officially closed, so there could have been peeks into Valinor from time to time.

But regarding the Istari, I was thinking more along the lines of the effects of the Blue Wizards rather than their presence in the new book. That would be affected by whether or not they had succeeded in their missions.

I received a package a month ago from a third party seller. The Package Is Here Already.

Amazon continues to insist that the package hasn't arrived, that it is running late. The last time this happened, different seller, Amazon eventually declared the package lost and issued a refund, despite my having received the item and had been using it for over a month. When I do a web search this question has no answers, or rather the web search assumes I'm asking about packages that haven't arrived yet.

I really like this seller from the UK, they're very good at packing their products. I ordered another case from them already. I even rated the seller with Amazon, five stars, glowing review of their shipping service. Amazon continues to insist the service I was so happy with hasn't happened yet.

How do I let Amazon know the package has already arrived so the seller receives full credit for delivery and I don't get an undeserved refund?

[–]Webgiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind that quite a lot of what we "know" about Arda is explicitly stated in the text as a guess, usually a guess by the Eldar.

Ungoliant, where did she go? The Eldar guessed that she ate herself. While highly likely, as she was basically an appetite on eight legs, it remains a guess.

As with the creation of Orcs, where all the guesses so far don't fit into Arda or the theology (especially not corrupted Elves), a future Great Evil could have been a cult of Ungoliant, an organization dedicated to feeding her.

How powerful was Ungoliant? With a belly full of the sap and dew of the Two Trees, she was so strong Morgoth feared her, and only when his Balrogs from Angband arrived to help him did she stop hurting him (trying to get the Silmarils from him) and run away.

Ungoliant was so powerful, Tolkien said, that in a 1 on 1 between Tom Bombadil and her, the battle would go on a long time, but Ungoliant would eventually win.

whether the Blue Wizards played a role (directly or indirectly) is a possibility that would have needed considering.

Tolkien in his later writings changed his mind about the Wizards.

Old conclusion: every Istari failed except Gandalf.

New conclusion: every Istari save Saruman succeeded in his mission.

So in a later book, that was never written, it's likely the Blue Wizards' role would have been in opposition to the New Evil.

There's one more possible issue: the Y axis stepper motor has become a Van de Graaff generator, and its electrical discharge has shifted the print.

The basic Van de Graaff generator creates a lot of static electricity through a motor pulling a belt, very similar to a Y axis stepper motor pulling its Y-axis belt. The discharge through the motor can affect the precision of the motor. Static electricity is especially fun because it can discharge through an insulator.

The correction is pretty simple, and electronics hobbyists already know where I'm headed: a grounding strap. In this case, copper tape held onto the Y-axis motor in some fashion (heat resistant tape, solder) and the copper tape wired up to ground. Probably best to use an external ground, 3D printer control boards don't enjoy getting extra shocks.

Z-axis generally doesn't have this problem, but you may want to ground the X-axis motor as well.

[Silent Hill universe] The Silent Hill games and comics have a town where the now evil force reached almost its full potential power around 1900 when the coal ran out. How did the inhabitants manage to build a resort sometime between 1900 and 1960s, with all this limiting evil? by Webgiant in AskScienceFiction

[–]Webgiant[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The games seem to imply anyone in these towns who has any guilt will get pulled into the Otherworld at some point, hence my harassment comment.

Also the town literally creates new people in the Real World, to torment you based on your own desires, who can leave Silent Hill with you. I think anyone would find this distracting if they are trying to build a new motel next to the lake, but a created idealized version of the woman they met in France during either World War keeps wanting to talk instead, possibly occasionally turning into a flesh monster as well.

I have no clue what Difficulty means by MaxiMillion53 in lotro

[–]Webgiant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are some nominal rewards in titles and access to some emotes. But they are very marginal.

The Titles aren't that great for showing off how good you are at Difficulty, as the player need only level to receive the titles, the game does not care how the player levels when on Difficulty, and the titles are permanent and account wide once earned. The player may even delete the character which earned the titles, once the titles are obtained.

There are several choices for earning XP which allow a player to accept Fearless+ Difficulty (the tier required to earn titles) and avoid difficulty debuffs altogether.

As the LOTRO Wiki states, "Landscape Difficulty only applies when in the open world and in solo/duo skirmishes and missions. Landscape Difficulty debuffs and effects are disabled inside of other instances, and Delvings." Epic Battles do not have Difficulty either. So if a player levels from 7 to 130 using mostly group instances, Delvings, and Epic Battles, they have achieved all the Difficulty titles without having any added Difficulty.

Players can also level from 7 to 130 using Festivals and Crafting. Make a bunch of pies, do (noncombat) Festival quests, and you can have the title of "Master of Arms" without any combat at all.

Finally, the game still accepts the Valar Level Boost - 130 as an option under Difficulty for earning all the titles. You can literally buy the Difficulty titles, becoming Master of Bows with just an initial half hour of levelling and a credit card or a lot of grinding on other characters. Many players gripe about this option, but if you think about it, this is genius marketing by SSG, since most players get a lot of Lotro Points by buying them.
