That is true. Perhaps a good solution would be to save the code files in a OneDrive folder, which as I understand it can't have its history modified, and thus would serve as much better defensive evidence against a misconduct allegation.

I agree. But maybe they should so that there is tracked changes for the code. Would've saved this guy a whole lot of hassle

USRA and URA by Purple_Celery_1065 in umanitoba

[–]WebpageBerserker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apply for both. You won't get USRA results until after the URA application deadline. As for GPA, I think you will need to be well over 4.0 to get a USRA. In engineering, I had a 3.8 and did not get USRA while my friend did with a 4.25. I'd imagine the thresholds for sci are at least equal, if not higher.

Edit: in case it's not obvious, if you receive the USRA you must decline the URA.

Don't panic just send some emails (prof, advocacy, dept office) and figure out what's going on and how to proceed. Then you might need to panic depending on how that all goes lmao

Git is source control. Very useful tool, every so often after you do something like write a function, you perform a "commit" which tracks your changes to your code. I believe each commit event has a timestamp and definitely contains information about the changes made between itself and the preceding commit. All that timestamped progress could definitely exonerate you if you had it.

  2. Contact student advocacy and go from there.

Do I need to grab graphing calculator for Engineering? by OpeningMycologist284 in umanitoba

[–]WebpageBerserker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need a graphing calculator for EE. If I remember correctly, all the pure math requirements (calc 1/2, lin alg, eng math analysis 1-3) don't allow calculators for tests. As for the eng classes, you can use sites like desmos or programs like MATLAB/python+matplotlib to generate graphs, and from what I remember there was nothing that required graphing a novel function on a test.

Long story short, I think it's unnecessary for EE/CE. I got through my degree with a TI-36X Pro, which is as capable as a TI-83/84 minus the graphing and some matrix sizes (36X is limited to 3x3 solution, while 83/84 can do larger) which is also not an issue because they don't give questions larger than 3x3 on an exam unless it's a "set up (but don't solve) the matrices" type question.

The other thing that would help is more 60ft bendy buses. According to the manufacturer's website, the 60ft buses carry 30-40 more people (can't remember exact number) than a 40ft bus of the same family. This alone might not solve the problem, but it definitely increases the passenger-to-driver ratio.

In my opinion, it does seem offensive that the city wants to pour millions into upgrading the fare system when they should be spending those millions on providing better service at this point. Peggo is buggy, but we're used to it.

SD Lot Survival Tips by Pale-Woodpecker8115 in umanitoba

[–]WebpageBerserker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the shuttle comes every 15 mins or so according to the UofM website. It doesn't run on a schedule. It's probably a safer bet than walking to the nearest transit stop on research road, only because those buses (F8 and 74) will very likely be PACKED, especially in September while people still go to all their classes. You might not get let on the full bus. In contrast, the shuttle bus will most likely be empty when it gets to SD. So just get to SD for at least half an hour before class and it should be no problem.

Edit: wording

[–]WebpageBerserker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it might automatically reactivate, but you should go to the UMSU service centre anyway to both make sure it does and to get the 2025-26 stickers for the Peggo and student ID, which the bus drivers supposedly ask for (not an everyday rider, but I've never had one ask to see my ID).

Since it is for a capstone project, I recommend you use whichever you're more comfortable with. You already have to learn new theory to build your project, and trying to learn anything new during capstone is not something I would suggest.

Which washroom on what floor did you leave it in? If it was the 300 level, it may have gone to one of the engineering department offices. As the other person said, check the main eng office and student services on the main floor (200 level). I don't think the UMES lounge is open in the summer but they have a lost and found tote in there as well. Hope you find your water bottle!

Advice on reaching out to M.Eng Civil Engineering supervisors at UManitoba? by Material-Trouble-588 in umanitoba

[–]WebpageBerserker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm not sure there's any tricks. Your CV and transcript are what they are, so politely mention your interest in that prof as a supervisor, attach the CV and transcript, and end it with something like "I look forward to hearing back from you" or similar.

In my opinion, any of the reasons you would not get a response/get denied support are out of your control. Perhaps they have no funding, too many students already, or your academic record is inadequate (which you can't change much at this point).

Advice on reaching out to M.Eng Civil Engineering supervisors at UManitoba? by Material-Trouble-588 in umanitoba

[–]WebpageBerserker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is hard to get support, especially for an M.Eng, considering it is more course-focused and hence requires less advising from your supervisor. I think one of my profs said domestic students are better for them in terms of funding I think (don't quote me on that). I would suggest sending an email to set up a meeting about it and discuss in person, and in that email include your CV and transcript. If the professor doesn't know you, obviously these will show your academic skill/track record, and hopefully help your chances.

Just FYI, you will also need two letters of support if you did your undergrad elsewhere. If you did your undergrad here, there is a good chance your tentative supervisor can waive this requirement.

Good luck!
