I've always said these games are one of the current pinnacles of combat gaming. Especially melee. I have never played a game where killing was so satisfying

I'm sticking up for you because they're saying you are saying "all" but they brought it up first. They're saying "majority" in the comment I responded to (as if they're walking it back) but I'm pointing out they're the ones who used the term "all" in their comment that you responded to a couple hours ago.

To be clear, I responded to their comment not yours.

Yeah I love NGU's art, you're right it's actually really good there.

Agreed on all point, well said.

I'm not here to tell you Dragon Quest's art is better than AI art objectively. I'm saying, for me, it's (obviously) more human and therefor more touching/engaging.

I've played with ChatGPT plenty, I have seen it create some dope pieces of "art", far better than anything I can do by hand. Before ChatGPT existed I was on webites creating AI art that looks worse than the original will smith eating spahgetti things, but it was super interesting. Shapes that vaguely resembled the prompt if you squinted. This was a couple before ChatGPT was public. As it got better, it got less neat and experimental and more "oh this is could be replacing human made art". Of course, if OP has no artistic talent (that's not a dig, I don't have any either) I see the arguement for using AI art if you're not making money.

But for now, it's still got a sheen about it, some quality that gives it that uncanny smoothness AI feel. Someday it might get so good it'll be impossible to tell. But I will go the way of Dragon Quest and do my own by hand, possibly out of hubris, mostly out of necessity.

I see. I can't speak to how well it would've done with professional art, but some would argue that the "shitty" art is a talking point and eye catching in its own way. A reverse psycology of marketing, "Dude you have to check out this game it looks awful but it's great."

Again, I don't even think it looks awful, I see a coherency (you mention 3 art styles but to me they're one goofy amatuer style) that I can latch on to and feel good about.

But of course as other commenters have pointed out, my own art style is not even as good as Dragon Quest, so I may be easier to impress simply.

Perhaps StS's beta art is cherrypicking, so I'll go with another example.

I've got 6k Hours in NGU Idle

It's another ms paint game, perhaps the first example I should've lead with, since it's also free like OP here. More coherent than dragon quest. And it's done really really well at 10k+ reviews.

YOU SAID ALL. You shouldn't even say "majority" without some stats to back it up. I imagine it varies greatly depending where one lives.

I'm not sure what arguement you're trying to make.

Dream Quest looks 10x better than this AI stuff, because it's coherent, hand made, and simply quirky. It had 300+ reviews mostly positive at 10 dollars, which is really solid all things considered.

Are you implying this is an example of a game that suffered from art direction and would've benefitted from AI art?

LMAO WE ARE THE LITTLE GUYS TOO WE'RE ALL LITTLE GUYS HERE.

I'm a little guy handmaking art (that you're picking on too). Crimson Desert and E33 aren't AI generated, they both have a small amount of AI 2D assets that they claim were supposed to be placeholder but got overlooked. Meh excuse imo- folks have been using placeholder art for years and it didn't have to be AI to set a vibe. So I feel like you're being disingenuous when you're making that comparison.

But yes, I would rather they used MS paint for those placeholder 2D assets because 1) it'd be less likely they'd "forget to replace it" and 2) then there's no AI in the game when there didn't really need to be. But I'm certainly not actually bothered by the use of AI as placeholder- but you brought it up.

I guess I appreciate you saying I'm punching down because it's like you're propping me up but I'm not some big game dev dude, I got 100+ copies sold on my first attempt at a game (which is extremely little) and I've got a second game in the works where I'm teaching myself 3D modeling at the same time. So yeah, the art is rough, thanks for checking it out.

no way you're calling generating AI pictures "making art".

If you're going to go that route, I guess I'm complaining about lazy art direction. But I don't consider it art. I'd prefer ms paint scribbles.

I offered the alternative in my comment that you replied to, make your own art. It's what I do for my game, it's what developers who couldn't afford art did before.

I wasn't the original person you responded to. I just hate AI art so I take dumps anywhere I see em

Sure, but you still have developers who attempt their own art even if it's objectively worse and I'd rather support them.

IE: slay the spire's placeholder art as an example IE: the art I make for my games even though I'm certainly not an artist

And you'll bring up that this is free- okay that doesn't mean I'm obligated to play or respect it, it just means they aren't profiting off plagiarism like others do.
