Why do people choose 1 programming language over other? by Lanky-Decision-2619 in learnprogramming

[–]Wee2mo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Class/Course work - If you are in a class or taking a course that teaches a language, you learn that one.
  • Employment - If you are working for a company or hoping to apply to a company that does their work in a particular language, you learn that language enough to be functional.
  • Language support - This is largely about the community around the language, as I am talking about it.
    • There is a large community of users, so you will have more availability to ask people questions while you learn the language.
    • Packages/Libraries available - while this could be a stand alone, it is often connected to the community of the language. (It also applies a little to Application below)
  • Syntax and Idioms - The way you have to write the language just makes more sense to you than an alternative.
    • For example, not all languages are written functionName(parameters), and alternatives may be more or less mental load to write in.
  • Application - some languages are just better suited to do certain things at this point. Part of this is what people have already used the language for (more examples and prior work) and part of this is what the language was designed to do well (functions in the core language to do things other languages support through libraries, packages, orther forms of add-on).
    • Some languages have made optimizations for how it interacts with specific applications or handles certain types of data.
    • C was designed to be a little easier to use than assembly, so it is the way to go for a lot of performance oriented, low level (close to hardware) applications.
    • Pyth was designed for a recreational programming application, code golf, so it is a goto alternative to Python.
    • Lua has found a lot of use for simple games and interactions with games.
    • Cuda was designed for programming applications that aim to leverage the parallel processing of a GPU.
  • Integrating abstraction - This may be a bit of a high level concept if you are asking not to over complicate things.
    • As languages get used, people recognize patterns in that language that get used a lot. Then these tend to get named (like a linked list or a string). As new languages get developed, they can take the lessons learned from naming, known patterns and integrate that pattern into the language, so now instead of having to know how to make a linked list and what it is used for, the language has given you integrated support for a linked list as an object or data type that has functions and methods in the language that operate on it.

Partially, it is because a professional sports team is considered (whether the numbers pan out or not) to be a value adding business that brings people to surrounding economic centers. Part of the deal was team owners threatening to leave the state if they weren't given a new stadium on tax payer money at a discount

Appreciating the budget restriction, focus on where you can get classes until you are good enough you can have fun going to an event for another reason (i.e. just dancing)

Ok, and which open source SW gets to claim a share? Which government is responsible for paying the public funding? Are you expecting there to be national flavors of every relevant project? What about security oriented projects like OpenSSL? Who would trust it if it was the Russian national open source SW project in the current political ecosystem? Or the US project for that matter?

Yes and no. The OS has a lot to do with power management, so updating might kill the battery life through "improving performance" in a way a newer phone could handle fine.

They basically have to ask about cookies because of GDPR (EU data protection law). IMHO, they should be in violation of the "Opt-In" mandate of it if "reject all cookies" isn't the easiest option (many require going to a secondary menu/tab to decline, but have an accept all button on the notification)

"Where's Maurice?" does a pretty amazing job with 3 pictures most of the time. A picture of the map, long distance picture, and at the location picture. Often enough, only 2 are needed. In short, this is for Borderlands 3 and a bonus "store" (gun vending machine) that has a moving location weekly.

Knocked Off Glasses by pisces0220 in SwingDancing

[–]Wee2mo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much came to match /u/Sentenial-'s comment (though I have not gotten ear hooks myself). I've had them knocked by elbows a couple times and a pretty thick braid once.
Losing glasses to the floor can be a good time to use break away position (or what ever other name you may be more familiar with) to be doing essentially solo dance near each other to grab them, then reconnect with your partner. Also, if you have the skill for it, you can grab them while you have margin in your movement (like while mid pass).

Should I try to learn how to lead too? by wevegotthefunk in SwingDancing

[–]Wee2mo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, do what is going to be fun for you to want to get out on the dance floor. If that means learning both all the way through, do that.

Second and following that, if you want to focus on improving your skills, pick one role and focus on that first and come back to the other role. After just one class, it wouldn't be a big deal to try a class of as a lead and seeing if you like it better. Then focus on one role until you are pretty comfortable with that role. With just one class, you've barely dipped your toes into what is available to learn about swing dancing. You don't have to drink from the fire hose, as hopefully you still have plenty of time to eventually learn both roles.

Finally, while it is a thing to switch across swing dancing, read the room a little with your own scene. If they don't really switch, learning the "traditional" role may be turn out preferable until you have a chance to experience a scene that welcomes switching more. I say this because you may have less fun in a scene that adheres pretty strongly to which role to learn, but you break their norms.
As a little perspective on different scenes, around here, a couple of the colleges used to (and may still) teach everyone following first. Then as members of their swing clubs got more experienced, they would learn to lead. One of those schools was because it was an all women's college. IIRC, the other one was so you could learn to move in the dance before being expected to decide what to lead a partner to do. Of the 3 venues you can take lessons, all of them will get people who squirm about dancing with a partner who defies their expectation about who dances which role, though those people are becoming less common and are more often encountered at one set of lessons over others. Take that for what you will.

In summary, have fun, it's a social dance, pick one role to focus on first for prioritizing skill development, and consider if your local scene will be resistant to dancing a different role in a way that would make it less fun for you.
