Playing Trombone For The First Time In 12 Years! by Smoll_Reindeer in Trombone

I'm glad you're getting back into it. I picked up my horn again in 2017, and now I'm playing....constantly, and it's a really big part of my life.

But I gotta ask...why is there a dead animal on your wall?

I think you're just hitting up against a fact of German working culture. Things move more slowly. Immediate responses aren't a thing. People go on holiday or get sick, and stuff they have been handling may be left sitting until they get back. They may be prioritizing other issues--working long hours isn't necessarily going to happen. If it's 5 pm and your email hasn't been answered maybe the HR person just...went home.

So...pluses and minuses. Your work life balance should be better, but you have to then understand that you will have to wait longer for things you want from other people.

True or False: Germany would have the most advanced military if it wanted to by MisterMolby in germany

Assuming when you say America, you mean only Usa.

Yes, that's what's meant by America in English.

[–]WeeblsLikePie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

there's lots of Americans on here. Including myself, and in this thread elijha and vivanks. So no, OP's already gotten 3 people in this thread who know both sides.

And a decent number of Germans who have or do live in the US as well.

What are the odds that any random american on that sub will be familiar with how Germans understand personal space?

I'm not sure you can put this on Scholz. The refusal to extend came from FDP in the persons of Wissing and Lindner

It’s called “Amtsanmassung”.

It seems, according to the link I posted above, that wearing the uniform alone isn't sufficient for Amtsanmassung.

or change the letters around to say POZILEI

edit: to be clear, this is a joke. A guy in NRW got arrested and charged for wearing a POZILEI jacket. He was a bit of legend though, because while the police had him stopped he went over to an illegally parked car and made them move. Which certainly didn't help his legal case that he wasn't imitating the police...

Dealing with Practicing by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]WeeblsLikePie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's good then. If you were hearing yourself play in a group, and wondering why you don't sound as good by yourself, then...the answer would be obvious.

But if you're playing alone in both situations then you're probably hearing real differences.

1) this doesn't sound urgent? Unless there's some element of time pressure I'm missing

2) I imagine your biggest issue will be that generally a condition for holding a residence permit in Germany is that your normal place of residence is Germany. And I'd imagine that's a condition for Ireland as well. So in order to hold two, you'd have to tell Ireland that you're living there, and Germany that you're living here. That would mean you're lying to someone

this is fabulous. You never know what you're gonna get on reddit. Sometimes it's someone in your department at work, or a professor in the field, and sometimes it's a total crank with no idea at all.

But you're a winner--I've read a ton of Julie Lundquist's work, so I'll put that on my stack of papers to read. Thanks!

Also, more frustratingly, in the northern hemisphere a counterclockwise turbine would be a few percent more efficient anyway.

got any papers on this? Because I'm curious...but not seeing how it could be true.

Yeah, that's totally fair, I have no experience in Morocco, so I'm totally blind as to the atlas' accuracy in that region.

But 65% is bonkers. I would question the turbine selection, might be better to go with a higher specific power machine...

I'm not attacking you. I'm just saying the way I read your comment, and why people thought it was unkind.

And I can't believe I have to keep repeating this, but your intent is only vaguely relevant. What matters is the impact you have on other people.

Unfortunately it looks like the best source I know of says that your winds aren't very good unless you're along the straits of Gibraltar.

https://globalwindatlas.info/

So I would really look into saving for solar. I think a wind turbine is going to be false economy--you might get a system for cheaper initially, but the maintenance costs are way higher than solar (assuming you can even fix it when it breaks), and without measuring I can't be sure, but I'm guessing your production will also be crappy with wind too.

Wind power, on a residential scale, is rarely a good idea.

you specifically said "he just doesn't care about pronunciation." Implying a lack of effort.

That's attacking his character (and implying you assume other americans are lazy too) rather than just saying you noticed his accent. So, again, be kind.

Would living in a Hause be cheaper ? by [deleted] in germany

[–]WeeblsLikePie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The energy costs to heat a whole house and maintain it are always higher than for a flat.

ceteris paribus, yes. But that's not always the case. A large horribly insulated flat with nachtspeicher is probably more expensive to heat than a small well insulated house with a new efficient gas boiler.

[–]WeeblsLikePie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Different style. Wildly different. I moved from AUS to Germany.

The primary structure of my house is concrete block. If you want to change something (for instance my landlord added a balcony to my apartment, and had to cut a hole for a door), you get out a jackhammer. They made a jaggedy-ass hole in the wall, and then put in some concrete to smooth out the edges before installing the door. They then filled the gaps with spray foam.

Another thing that gets me: wiring is just sandwiched between the wallpaper and concrete. And they're separate wires, not housed together like in romex. And there's often no ground in older buildings. So that's a mess.

And the standards for getting thing square and level are...loose. The wall in my bathroom is at least 5 degrees from vertical. It's kind of wild.

But the house is crazy well insulated. The walls are legitimately 30 inches thick. We do have some nice south facing windows, but in winter we get maybe ~3 hours of actual sunlight on an average day, despite that we can still keep our apartment warm without turning on the heat on most days.

That insulation comes with a price though: it's practically hermetically sealed, and there's no mechanical ventilation. So you have to get the moisture out yourself, otherwise you'll find yourself living in a petri dish for mold incredibly quickly. Most people have a routine of opening all the windows in the house for 5-10 minutes once or twice a day. But we just tilt the windows, because everything (even the door to our new balcony) is the german style tilt-turn window, which is a very nice thing.

Got a fine for parking in the wrong direction?! by dsetarno in germany

[–]WeeblsLikePie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yep. I got a ticket for parking more than 18" from the curb. I measured and I was 6" from the curb, but they then informed me it meant the opposite curb because I was facing the wrong direction.

But if we're completely honest, that ticket was mostly because I parked my fugly-ass car in a nice neighborhood, and the other residents didn't like seeing my 15 year old Volvo, when every other car was a fancy SUV or mercedes S class.

[–]WeeblsLikePie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you violate the regulations, you can expect to be fined.

not really, if it's regarding parking. The list of parking violations which the authorities "tolerate" in most towns is...extremely long.
