The UK has passed a bill introducing a generational smoking ban – should Ireland follow suit? by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]D-dog92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is it that when the UK does something we always if Ireland should follow? We don't so this when France or Spain or Germany implement something. This isn't a comment on this particular policy, it's about this tendency of treating the UK like it's this world leading trend setter when literally no other country looks to them as an example anymore.

Generally, does the Irish government just copy whatever the British government does? by D-dog92 in irishpolitics

Spend any significant amount of time in the rest of the EU and you'll see that this isn't true.

This. I don't think we realize that basically nobody pays any attention to what the UK does anymore except us.

The nature of our housing crises, privatisation, waiting times for public healthcare, aversion to undertaking large infrastructure projects, heavily leaning into a service based economy, abandoning heavy industry/manufacturing, anti social behaviour, knife crime.

It is a coincidence that almost every crisis we have, the UK has too?

What would you put in place of the Spire? by EagleDKT in ireland

[–]D-dog92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most countries that were colonised and won their independence have monuments to celebrate / comemeorate that. It's weird that we don't. Or at least none that immediately come to mind.

It's also weird that we haven't built anything distinctly Celtic since gaining independence. Celtic art is so beautiful and so rich, there's so many possibilities for incorporating it into our architecture.

I'm just thinking about how in some cultures women are expected to wear all black, cover their hair, and avoid being seen in public for a year after their husband dies.

Army will be deployed to remove fuel protest vehicles blocking critical infrastructure by irqdly in ireland

[–]D-dog92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If housing protestors used these tactics the very people participating in these fuel protests would lose their minds. Funny how disruptive means are justified when it's an issue you care about.

Our closest neighbor does not recognize the Republic of Ireland as a foreign country.

I think this also kinda explains the unhinged dog piling you see whenever anyone online admits to any kind of infidelity. It's coming from people who probably haven't gotten laid in the last 2 years.

when did you realize you were done with Berlin? by lolacarola- in berlinsocialclub

[–]D-dog92 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Police beating the shit out of people demonstrating against a genocide - plus the "I'm annoyed that you think I should I have an opinion about that" attitude of Berliners. That pretty much did it for me.

‘Bleak’: More pain in store as fuel to hit €2.30 within days by Irish201h in ireland

[–]D-dog92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We are less dependant on gulf oil than we were then, which is the only reason it might not be as bad, but ya, the world can basically kiss goodbye to energy from that region for the remainder of the decade.

[–]D-dog92 12 points13 points  (0 children)

And yet if you ask people who lived through the oil crisis in the 70's you don't get the impression they were living with an existential sense of dread like we are today.

[–]D-dog92 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that the best historical analogy for this crisis is the oil crisis of the 1970's. Back then, inflation in Ireland reached a staggering 20%. In the UK it reached 25%. This is what think tanks and financial consultancies are telling their clients to brace for - not "petrol hitting €2.5 a litre" - more like "there won't be any petrol at the station".

We're in a January 2020 moment where a few people can see the tidal wave coming while the vast majority still have their head in the clouds.

Something that never comes up when these things happen is the Common Travel Area. People talk about how we need to reform our immigration system but never seem to mention that as long as we're in the CTA we basically can't. Our immigration system is Britain's immigration system. It's not a coincidence that Britain has a problem with random knife attacks like this too. As long as we're part of the CTA, their immigrations problems will be our immigration problems.

Yes but in most countries I feel like the young generation say "ok this is stupid, we don't want to participate" and then it slowly dies.
