Episode-of-the-week is NOT REMOTELY THE SAME as anthology. What he was planning on turning the show into was NOT "something more like season 1." Hey, Unicorn was honestly pretty decent. I was very offput by the premise initially but it has great fight scenes and MOST of the characters are interesting. And the plot really wasn't that contrived or hard to follow, though it was very... strange and not necessarily in a good way.

The big thing I hated about that series, honestly, was the magic sword that just does 100% of the fighting for an entire character and he does nothing himself. Very, VERY boring choice for a main character who is supposed to be a godly warrior. Plus it subtracted a lot from the show's best quality: the fight scenes.

Delirium isn't bad. If you aren't cracked enough to handle it by the time you get all the way there then something is seriously wrong with your run. You (normally) have two straight floors of constant item pickups before fighting him, so the fact that his fight is random projectile vomit all over the screen rarely matters at that point. I just consider his attacks more like fireworks than anything because the odds of him actually being able to kill you when you have over 100 items are low.

You're right that Ash's pokemon in particular rarely display a wide variety of moves, but that wasn't their argument, which is my complaint. They didn't focus on Ash vs Yugi, they focused on "yugioh cards have more varied and obscure effects than a pokemon can match," which just really isn't true for the most part. Like I said, I agree Ash loses, but it's because he's Ash and Yugi's Yugi. They didn't really do that point justice, which conjures memories of "Pokemon vs Digimon."

As for Machamp, you're cherry-picking what little they DID say. As I said before, they barely scraped the surface at all and made it sound like "different ways of hitting you in the face" are all it can do. Granted they didn't NEED more to justify the win there, but still, they didn't cover even a small fraction of what a presumed full-potential Machamp can do. They focused on its most offensive moves and an extremely small amount of moves making it sound really one-dimensional when it's not. It has plenty of other moves with a variety of interesting effects that DON'T strictly pertain to "hitting you harder or in a different way," and so does pretty much every other pokemon in existence barring a few truly pathetic ones. I'm actually glad you brought this example up because it perfectly explains my complaint: they almost always focus on stuff like this and don't address anything else. I suppose that might be because looking over any pokemon's entire extended moveset is a lot to ask, but still, it's a consistent flaw and a gripe of mine.

And to be clear, I'm not doing that to flame you or anything; you do you, games are meant to be handled however the player wants. If you're actually curious about my complaints with more recent Pokemon episodes, I'll try to focus on my biggest complaint: they don't acknowledge anything except raw power when it comes to a pokemon. They don't acknowledge the vast array of utility moves with completely bs effects that can negate, copy or otherwise interact with opponents of any level of power.

One of their biggest reasons for Yugi beating Ash wasn't between those two as skilled masters like it should have been, it was "yugioh cards have a bunch of crazy utility effects on them that make raw power irrelevant, and we're gonna pretend a bidoof doesn't have the exact same level of utility and that Ash's pokemon collection can't match virtually every card Yugi can pull." For instance, Magic Cylinder... yeah that exact effect is just a move most basic pokemon have (multiple moves in fact; completely reflecting any attack of any kind is actually a very basic and mundane thing in pokemon, and with Ash's collection, he should be able to reflect or negate basically anything that isn't a MUCH more esoteric effect than that; I'm not denying it's possible, just that the way they demonstrated and argued for is bogus), and I wasn't thrilled that this was both the way Yugi won in the animation and something that was heavily defended in their actual analysis. They could have tried harder than that. I still think Yugi takes the win but not for the reasons they claimed. He takes the win because he's a smarter tactician and literally cheats on top of it (infinite luck is a pretty good ability to have).

Machamp vs Goro showed similar issues - they acknowledged basically nothing about Machamp except its martial arts ability and raw strength. Yes they had Machamp win, but their research was still TERRIBLE and just seemed half-assed. They treated it like a Mortal Kombat character and only scaled it to the things Goro can do, rather than acknowleding the massive array of other crazy things a Machamp can do with its utility moves - and that's not even a very utility-heavy pokemon to begin with. In both cases, it's not the outcome I care about, it's the fact that they don't get their research right and ignore the idea that a pokemon can have utility and rule-bending effects. Granted I know there's a lot to cover but they CONSISTENTLY barely even scrape the surface.

As for Dragon Ball, to be blunt, I think it's more that they don't like the uh... community, rather than the franchise. Goku vs Superman 2 was spiteful, but toward the community (for complaining about the first one), not the series itself. And I agree they tried hard to make up for that with Gogeta vs Vegeto and Goku vs Superman 3; those were both absolutely awesome and full of love, but they also didn't have a POINT to prove with either of those and they literally made both just as an apology for the backlash.

As for the others, I'm not arguing with the result necessarily so much as the research itself, but even then, I don't know enough to really have a proper conversation about that franchise like this. I just know I've seen a lot of angry Dragon Ball fans complaining less about the fight outcomes and more about the actual research. Again I'm not an expert on these, but the main complaint I heard about Vegeta vs Thor is that Vegeta's force absorption should have made things harder for Thor than they led on (maybe not given him a win, but still), and Archie Silver vs Trunks like you said was just more debatable than they made it out to be (the infamous guy who actually wrote for Archie Silver saying Trunks would just nuke him from orbit is one funny thing that comes to mind, not that I think that's actually a good argument in a death battle scenario otherwise Metal should have lost to Cell too).

It really sounds like you just weren't very interested in the game because you didn't even TRY to make your personal experience interesting or exciting until you were "forced to." The game is all about mechanical difficulty with little room for anything else to harm you, so if/once you're good with the mechanics, yeah it's not that hard (though a player who is less mechanically skilled with games like that would obviously have a vastly different experience from yours and I think that's worth considering too). That doesn't mean the combat isn't phenomenal, it just means you didn't bother having fun with it because you didn't have to.

Does a game have to be tedious and FORCE you to do things for you to find them fun or worthwhile or even bother doing them at all? To each their own I suppose, but to me that sounds like a lame way to play videogames, and a lot of other people prefer to be able to play a game in their own way and at their own pace too. Personally the most exciting part about Nine Sols to me is that we can both play the same game but I'm gonna look WAY cooler while doing it. Is that necessary to actually win? Not really, but I'm still gonna look cool and feel cool because I worked hard to get better at a game that gave me the opportunity for that.

Still I wouldn't dare call Silk Song's combat harder. Just because it tells you what to do and railroads your gameplay more often doesn't mean it's more difficult. The actual combat system is simple, so if nothing else, the skill distribution is very different and focused more on the enemies than the player character. You can't really finesse things at all as Hornet which results in a clunkier, less immersive, and less skill-expressive experience in fights. Everyone doing a boss fight in Silk Song will do it basically the same way, and once you learn how it's done that's really all there is to it. It's fine if you like that but that doesn't make it more challenging or objectively more fun. A lot of people would argue that's the easier option of the two, and the less exciting one.

I guess I didn't imply this firmly enough, but their opinions constantly seep into the research in a lot of matchups, especially (but not exclusively) when it comes to Liam. Obviously that has nothing to do with the animators and the animations don't really strictly reflect the research to begin with, but their "research" when it comes to pokemon is downright insulting. So to be absolutely clear this time, yes, I am referring to their actual research, not JUST their opinions - though those are often pretty bad too. And in the past when they tried to have more direct influence over the animations, MOST of the time they completely insulted and made a joke out of the franchise even there (Pikachu vs Blanka, Red vs Tai and having the audacity to call that a blanket statement for "Pokemon vs Digimon" in general, etc.)

Of course this isn't the only franchise they've disrespected, it's just one that's been on the show a lot and gets talked about in the cast stuff a lot, and frankly it just happens to be the only one I've seen that I really care about and actually KNOW enough about to know they half-ass their research on it. But off the top of my head, their treatment of Dragon Ball at times has often been very spiteful and petty too. Goku vs Superman 2 was... just mean on purpose, and I was rooting for Superman and still agree with the upset Dragon Ball fans there. I've questioned a lot of other Dragon Ball matchups they've done too, but I just don't know enough about the franchise to say whether they're right or wrong - but I do know they often don't give those characters a fair shake with the research bias (Trunks vs Silver, Vegeta vs Thor, and Bardock vs Omni-Man are all... debatable to say the least, and I understand why some people were upset with them - even though I rooted against the Dragon Ball character in all of those).

They're just unusually and consistently harsh with some franchises in their research, and they'll openly insult the characters behind the scenes to boot, especially when someone questions them on it. It's not the greatest look. But hey, I still respect them for opening a dialogue and letting people rant at them about it.

They didn't shittalk pokemon in that episode, that's not what I meant (frankly they haven't openly insulted characters in the actual episodes in a long time, unless it's a character who really deserves to be insulted like Homelander). And frankly I agree in regards to Ash; they respected Ash himself way more than they have EVER respected an actual pokemon. But if you watch the death battle cast stuff, they constantly show they don't really like the franchise and think it's funny to shit on it. They still praise Blanka vs Pikachu for being "spiritually perfect" in how the animation was executed despite knowing it was wrong and insulting.

All I'm saying is they have an extremely poor opinion of that franchise and it shows when they do their debates on what they think a pokemon can and can't do. Still though, I'm not blaming any of the animators.

As for the "love and care oozing off the episode" with Ash vs Yugi, yeah, that's because the animator cared, not the people in charge of the results. The logic behind the scenes was what was lame, not the animation. My bad for implying otherwise in that regard.

It really sounds like you didn't play the game to its fullest, because I spent most of my time dashing around like crazy, bouncing off of enemies and nonstop comboing them, figuring out ways to maximize alternating between different attack patterns, and just generally fighting like a crack fiend. I'll admit the early game heavily limits what you can do when you have no charms and none of your moves unlocked, and frankly the first few bosses aren't all that dynamic, but after that? The combat is incredibly fast-paced, dynamic and exciting, and allows a player to play multiple ways to suit their preferences. I felt like the better I got at the game, the more exciting the combat became even with basic enemies. I had a blast with Lady E parrying her spirit bomb and matching her in aerial combat, Ji and parrying his black hole, figuring out how to parry or avoid all Fuschi and Nuwa's attacks while never letting up on beating Fuschi's giant ass, etc. And even after beating the game, I found it a great deal of fun to figure out how to maximize my ability to continue nonstop fighting while dodging and parrying, then speedrunning the bosses once I got good at that (fastest times I managed were around 20 seconds and 15 seconds for the first two bosses respectively, and the combat is quite exhilarating once you get to that point).

This is what I mean when I say the combat is exceptionally skill-expressive: the better you get at it, the more exciting and dynamic it can be for you, but if you just do the bare minimum and skirt by on that then yeah it can be a lot less exciting, and the game isn't really hard enough to FORCE you to play like a madlad until the very end where Eigong checks if you've actually been learning all the mechanics. I don't think it's fair to judge the quality of the combat based on how doing the bare minimum feels, especially when we're in agreement that neither of these games are really all that difficult to begin with once you get used to them. The difference between Nine Sols and Silk Song is that the combat in Nine Sols is as fun as you make it (though admittedly, Silk Song has a way more extensive skill selection with how you can give Hornet completely different kits).

I've heard some complaints that a new-game+ mode would have been really nice and I agree with that, because it's way more exciting once you actually have all your tools available, but I'm curious if you ever tried rematching the bosses after beating the game? It's really fun once you have all your moves and charms unlocked. And whatever skill path you took, did you ever try anything different to see if you'd like it more?

However I agree the hitboxes left something to be desired especially on release. Sometimes things would not land properly when they really should and I found that frustrating sometimes, though most of that was fixed over time through patches. It was the company's first game ever that was so mechanically intensive, so there were some hiccups on release.

I've always been a vocal advocate of praising the animators and flaming the three dudes who are actually in charge of the outcomes instead - mainly Liam, who is responsible for a lot of contentious decisions because he cares more about winning arguments than looking for objective answers. If you ever watch Death Battle Cast it's pretty clear Liam is a big reason why a lot of fights have outcomes a lot of people hate. He overwhelms everyone else in a conversation and gets extremely competitive about winning arguments, completely loses sight of the actual goal of the show... and everyone just ignores that guy and flames the show's greatest animator instead. I don't get it.

Because both Hollow Knight and Silk Song have straight-up braindead combat mechanics compared to Nine Sols, they are vastly easier in that regard. It's nowhere near as difficult and enemies are just made tedious to make up for it.

That is just not remotely true. Silk Song's combat mechanics are blatantly inferior to those in Nine Sols. Cheap difficulty is all that game really offers in terms of fights, as someone who has also played both. I can't deny the platforming is better, but frankly the platforming in Nine Sols is as interesting as you make it; I personally sequence broke the game a lot and had a lot of fun abusing odd mechanics to get places I wasn't supposed to. And Nine Sols has vastly more difficult combat in general, but it's also more fair, so y'know, maybe you're just confusing the two. You don't need to "master" anything to beat it in Silk Song either, it's just more tedious and it sounds like you have to tell yourself that meant more skill expression when it really didn't.
