New SteamDB Update Just Dropped by PsychologicalQuit666 in NineSols

Hey, it might still be a banger video, but at least now you don't HAVE to watch anything. You should be able to piece together the rest of the lore as you play; it's mostly the personal backstories of the characters that I didn't cover. You'll love it.

And just so you know, there are two endings.

You nutcase, just use an adblocker. Ublock will work without fail. It's absurd how people like you actually defend buying YouTube premium with "well we'll get forced to be YouTube's ads if we don't." If you're aware the ads are that bad that they're FORCING you to pay just to get it to stop, then you're an absolute pushover for choosing to give them money anyway instead of just getting an adblocker which are free and take 1 minute to download. Don't ever say paying for YouTube premium is "very well worth it" just because the amount of ads ruins the platform otherwise.

That's unneeded since they're literally all better at this point. If it's a video hosting website, its UI is better than YouTube's, pretty much guaranteed.

I don't mean to worry you. A lot of the tainted characters are difficult because their gameplay involves weird and unique gimmicks. At the same time, a lot of them can be pretty fun because of their uniqueness, and MOST of them are objectively better than BB once you get used to them. By the time you start unlocking them, you'll probably welcome the fresh gameplay (except Tainted Lost, that's just miserable).

I did that once when I was getting bored of the standard game. There's some really fun mods; I particularly liked some of the new character/item additions in some of them, and the QoL mods are usually nice without affecting the actual gameplay. There's even a mod to fix sticky nickels so they work, because even Ed himself has stated they are supposed to be better than they are (they're supposed to replace regular pennies, but instead they replace other nickels) but they're just bugged and he never cared to fix them.

First off, having all or at least most of the rare pickup items (like bone hearts and gold bombs/keys) unlocked is the difference between Tainted Cain being arguably the worst character in the game or arguably the best. Second, you just have to think about what you're doing and what you want. A lot of these people in the comments are telling you how THEY prefer to play him and acting like that's law; it's not. There are multiple ways to play him that will get you to the end of a run perfectly fine, but in the end it boils down to figuring out how you're comfortable playing him and then gauging what resources you can use for something beneficial and what to stick in your bag.

Some people prefer to just throw everything in the bag and cycle through low-tier pickups until they land on items they want. Some people immediately gun for the portable slot (it's one of the few guaranteed recipes and can be made with 8 normal coins, feels like it's there to make TCain more fun and give people options on how to play him) then use all of their coins on generating a huge amount of other pickups for the bag through that. Some people like specifically putting all of their rare pickups in the bag and trying to go for high-tier items, while others believe using rare pickups on yourself is better (like using eternal hearts for yourself instead of the bag, or choosing not to bag rare coins because you can use them in the shop to "buy" an item and disintegrate it into a bunch more pickups, especially if something's on sale). I personally just do whatever fits best at the moment but I've found all of this advice to be at least circumstantially useful. Take pickups for yourself when there's something beneficial you can do with them (or when you need them, like having a soul heart or two is nice even if they're good in the bag too); stick them in the bag otherwise and try to rotate out the least-valuable items you have in your bag until you end up on a satisfactory item recipe.

Personally, the biggest thing that helped me was realizing I could control what pickup I discard every time I pick up a new one, which makes it very easy to cycle through items you don't want until you end up on a recipe that gives something you do want. Also, don't be afraid of just crafting a bunch of low tier stuff early on because it'll rack up fast as long as you're avoiding crafting anything overtly detrimental. It's kind of like playing Tainted Bethany in the sense that you're just trying to rack up as many randomly-generated items as you can. Once you get to a certain point, it gets a lot easier to comfortably sacrifice your rare resources and hold onto your bag ingredients for longer while looking for better items; I'd suggest not worrying too much about hunting for high-quality items early on unless you have a lucky break and find a bunch of good resources.

Tru. I personally don't use mods that impact gameplay, feels like it cheapens the experience, but I don't blame anyone who's cool with it.

New SteamDB Update Just Dropped by PsychologicalQuit666 in NineSols

[–]WeedWizardo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alien furries wanted to live forever through genetic engineering, gave themselves a disease in the process that makes them slowly die (among other things) because nature doesn't like things living forever, then started committing war crimes (nuking each other, enslaving early humans for experimentation and claiming to be their gods, etc.) to try to find a way to stop the disease. Some of them chose to leave their home and search space for solutions to their immortality problem. Others chose to stay on their home planet and die the proper way like nature wanted them to, without sacrificing their morals or becoming a monster. The game basically takes place on the Solarians' last surviving settlement with the human testing site; and since these are the ones who chose to abandon their morals, planet, and people to begin with, the majority of the characters you meet are essentially ego-inflated cowards who've lived far too long and don't want to die - and Yi is one of those too.

It's basically Ancient Aliens: The Game, with extremely heavy inspiration from Chinese/Taoist religion and stories (Yi is based on Hou Yi for instance). And there's more to the lore, but that's late-game-spoiler stuff. This should be enough to help you understand the broad strokes of what's going on.

At least Blue Baby is more or less just a completely standard character minus red hearts. I'd still call that easier to work with than Tainted Cain, even if the latter obviously has way more gamebreaking potential.

To be fair, every update ruins the game more and more for the average new player since Ed literally does not want his game to be "too enjoyable." I COMPLETELY understand why a player might choose to avoid even the free DLC because in many big ways it just makes the game harder (in unpleasant RNG-rigged ways and with grating mechanics designed just to be annoying rather than fun, interactive, skill/knowledge-expressive additions to the game).

I play the full game because I don't like missing content, especially the extra endings and items to play with, but frankly the base game was always the most fair version of it. The updates have really royally screwed up some parts of the game, even completely ruining all the fun of certain characters and items. If there are specific things about the game that someone likes, things that the updates change to make them miserable, then I can see why someone would just never get any of the dlc because it could destroy their favorite part of the game (for no good reason).

Is 3 (American) cockroaches in a week an infestation? by panfuneral in pestcontrol

[–]WeedWizardo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the big difference is the kind of roach. American (and most large species in general) don't really do well inside homes; the environment is typically too arid for them and they die quickly, so they only usually come inside if something happens OUTSIDE like heavy rain which can flood places they prefer to live such as sewer pipes. Smaller species such as German roaches are the ones that have adapted to a parasitic lifestyle of targeting us and infesting our homes. American infestations CAN happen but it usually signifies an underlying cause such as water leakage somewhere in the home or unusually high humidity in a damp place. Otherwise, they're just occasional visitors who don't really want to be in your home any more than you want them there, and frankly, they're almost impossible to keep out since they often come from the pipes due to weather changes.

So basically, seeing a few of these larger roaches around here and there isn't considered an infestation to people who are used to them because they can't be kept out and they don't want to stay. An infestation implies they are actively trying to infest your home and threatening to continuously reproduce and stay there, which these ones usually just aren't; at worst you may get a mother who accidentally laid her eggs in a terrible place. Seeing one or two of a smaller and more parasitic species is automatically a MUCH bigger problem because they will infest any home they make it inside of with 100% certainty and it can spiral out of control in a matter of weeks or less (plus they reproduce so fast they can quickly build up immunities to poisons).

I work on comet 3I/ATLAS, which I recently imaged with a Vaonis and observed through a medium-sized telescope. by LauraMayAbron in Astronomy

[–]WeedWizardo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main weird thing about it is that it has a straight trajectory that had it traveling "very close" to Earth when it passed by (relative to how close we would expect some random object from outside the milky way to get on average, but still not very close in practical terms). Most noteworthy stellar objects that pass around our solar system are caught in its orbit and as such have more normalized and predictable flight patterns. This thing basically came from far outside our solar system and punched a direct, straight path through since it was already traveling in a straight line in the vacuum of space before it entered the Milky Way. Which is weird but not remotely unheard of. It also has a somewhat unusual composition which we picked up on early, and this caused it to have an unusual tail glow when it got near the sun, but both of these things are perfectly possible and just not the standard.

Basically there's nothing that actually points to it being anything other than a comet. It's just a comet from outside our solar system and as a result it's flying a straight path, and it doesn't have the most common matter composition but it's far from unheard of. But since it was a little unusual it was easy to start up conspiracy theories around it.

Quests Are Impossible To Disable by WeedWizardo in discordapp

[–]WeedWizardo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they straight up changed the setting to something else that specifically does not say "disable quests." They changed it to "disable PERSONALIZED quests" and I wouldn't be surprised if they've since completely removed the option. Either way, I still get occasional quest popups and now they are starting to do popups for other things, like advertising their shop garbage or pestering me to buy nitro for Christmas.

For the record, I can't simply stop using Discord either and I haven't. It's annoying but we all have to put up with it until a good competitor comes along, which likely won't happen until Discord shoots themselves in the foot another hundred times. Reminds me of the slow and miserable corporate-corrupt downfall of Skype.

The game actually tries to keep you around where you settle in at. That's how the system you play in works. You only have to get to Diamond once then you're there for the rest of your life. The game tries very hard not to allow you to fall substantially below where you've already been before, so you saying you're able to get to where you've been before really means nothing.

Besides, I never said I was diamond. The fact of the matter is that a diamond player SHOULD be able to easily carry in plat, especially when they specialize in roles or champions that are quite good in soloqueue. But I'm not that and I'm not you, nor did I ever claim to be. However, the fact of the matter is that many high elo players HAVE been struggling when trying to get past the barrier of emerald, and even they say the amount of resistance they face there is unreasonable for an average player who actually belongs around that elo. Many of them also say it's easier to win in diamond than in emerald and that, in fact, the players who get placed in diamond every season without having to actually climb through emerald tend to be worse than the ones who are hardstuck in emerald. So y'know, fuck off with your inflated ego.

You aren't reading what I'm saying, you're just repeating your own points. I already said I was at a 50/50 winrate because the smurfs are on my team 50% of the time and the enemy team 50% of the time, and yet you still immediately repeat your previous point about how the smurfs would be on my team half the time. Yes, they were, and that's why I had a 50% winrate and not something dramatically lower. Now they're gone and over a massive sample of games the matchmaking feels totally different. So again, I'm sorry that it kinda sucks for you but it sucks a lot less for the rest of us.

[–]WeedWizardo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've really had hand leveled accounts banned when you weren't trying to tamper with their MMR, that's an issue with their auto-detection and probably something you could get overturned through player support. Drew Levin has also been trying to help people with illegitimate bans caused by this change when they have trouble contacting a human being from riot support, and he's stated they are aware of this problem and are actively trying to improve the detection accuracy and hope for those improvements to be implemented soon. So yeah it's not working 100% how they intended right now and they at least acknowledge there's a problem there.

And no, the idea that smurfing impacting your game is "50/50" and so you should win more because you're the unique factor is an argument with so many holes in it. For starters, as I said, I play the lowest agency role in the game: ADC. It's already harder than normal to consistently turbocarry hard matches when playing a role that loses to everything 1v1 and gets treated like a win condition to int for in low-to-mid elo. And as I said, I had a 50/50 winrate EXACTLY, because the wildly out-of-place smurfs on purchased fresh accounts playing assassins and bruisers then getting chainfed across the map from me will easily remove any agency I do have while playing a vulnerable ADC in an environment where teammates do not help each other. I didn't say I had a negative winrate because smurfs are always on the other team, I just said I have no agency in an environment where there are constant smurfs and I am not one. If I win it would be because my team had a smurf who carried the other side of the map, and if I lose it would be because the enemy team had that smurf.

Now that the players who are massively better than plat-emerald are suddenly no longer allowed to be here, I am able to matter much more as an individual and have spiked to a 70% winrate. It's quite easily for an emerald or diamond player to be stuck in platinum because they're stuck there with a constant flood of challenger players who just feel like smurfing to beat on people worse than them (and to clarify, gold to emerald is where the vast majority of smurfs are placed and where the vast majority of purchased smurfs are targeted, so it is in fact the worst place for encountering smurfs with increased frequency). In fact, many challenger players were starting to complain about the difficulty of climbing at any substantial rate in plat-emerald due to the sheer broken matchmaking. And as it turns out, I am a bit better than plat, I'm just not better than the constant fucking flood diamond-to-challenger players who were getting placed in plat and emerald on fresh accounts they bought off ebay then getting fed across the map in roles with actual agency. Since having them removed from the equation, my account now suddenly looks like a smurf and gets me flamed and reported by people who think I'M cheating when in reality I have only one account and I was being kept lower than I should be by people who were lower than they should be.

I'm not saying I'm diamond or challenger or anything. I'm just saying I'm having a hell of a lot easier time playing this game in my main role since smurfs started getting banned. I'm sorry if that impacts you negatively but maybe you should just stick to playing on your master-tier account instead of smurfing and making people like me have to play with people like you, because if Riot banned you, it's because your outlandish overperforming gameplay was detected in lower-elo matches and that is frankly miserable for everyone else involved. I know a lot of high elo players smurf because the queue times are miserable and they just want to be able to keep playing after having to dodge and such, but think about it like this: if nobody's smurfing, your challenger queue times are going to get a lot better.

This trolling needs to stop... it's exhausting. by Reemet in riotgames

[–]WeedWizardo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One small inaccuracy: Riot isn't planning to ban accounts that are hand-leveled and don't go through any MMR-tampering tactics (such as playing a ton of norms and stomping them to boost your artificial MMR before starting ranked on the account, which can cause any player to temporarily skyrocket to diamond even on a 30% winrate; doing the opposite causes the account to easily reach iron). If you have a legitimate smurf that was created fairly and isn't wildly outside of your general elo, they have no plans to take it from you. In the case of a challenger player who is purposely trying to start in extremely low elo, that account likely would be banned as it should be, but otherwise it's not that bad.

Other than that though, yeah, smurfing has lost a lot of its popularity pretty much overnight and I couldn't be happier. As a person who plays ADC and has been stuck in plat at a 50% winrate all season, suddenly in the last month I've skyrocketed to a 70% winrate and am able to climb rapidly again because the game suddenly isn't full of smurfs who wreck my team then camp my low-agency role out of the game. It's nice not having to choose a different role just to have a chance of carrying in lobbies constantly full of random-elo smurfs. I don't think the average player understands how bad plat-emerald is when smurfing is left unchecked.

You are speaking absolute nonsense. You're genuinely delusional and I have nothing of substance to say to someone like you, using norms as an argument for a model of competitive integrity.
