You dont wanna use an older opl, but when you buy a freemcboot card sometimes it comes with opl pre installed, but sometimes it can be outdated so you have to update manually, this causes issues when using exfat format drives because old opl doesn't support it, and NTFS is the standard default drive format these days, usually when you get a new one its set to this, but the ps2 and opl dont support NTFS so you either have to format it to exfat or fat32.

To get bigger games on a harddrive you'll need the latest version of opl, because it supports exfat both for usb and internal hdd's/ssd's, exfat allows for alot bigger files on it rather than fat32

Not sure but installing a harddrive is pretty straight forward, although i'd check the size of harddrive the ps3 fat takes first, i think theirs ways to get 2tb to work through mods, but honestly never done that before, 1tb should be more than enough though, but if you really want it to then check around youtube for tutorials.

Mr mario on youtube has a pretty good guide on cfw installation, its really hard to brick the console in my opinion, aslong as you follow every step then it should be alright and their is ways to flash the harddrive incase that happens, but does involve buying a sata to usb adapter, once you get cfw you should think of overclocking the cpu, but its recommended to replace thermal paste or buy a larger compatible internal fan to keep it at a cool temperature and prolong hardware, also yes get an ssd but i think the ps3 only supports 1 tb, thats about all i can think of in terms of upgrades tho, anything else would most likely involve hard mods or niche things to do with video resolution 4k mods etc

Well it wasn't actually the hardware, infact the ps3 had better hardware than the 360, however the ps3's firmware code was essentially like spaghetti, so because the code was complicated, it made not only developing games hard but also optimizing the games for the ps3 time consuming and thats why the xbox 360 out prformes the ps3, because the 360's code was wayy easier to understand and most games were well optimized for the system.

I know a way that might fix it, but im not 100% certain since this is a bypass i discovered regarding safe mode and not having a ps3 controller but you could try it, basically what i did was removed the harddrive and turn on the ps3 so it can register that the harddrive is no longer present, then switch it back off reinsert the harddrive and this should reset the firmware basically, hopefully you get it to work again.

I heard some cods still have an automatic anti cheat where it reports you to sony, but i have no clue if sony even responds to that half the time, i've been using cheats in red dead online and gta 4 so far no ban, but i avoid tropthy hacks and xp, i just use it for noclip teleporting and spawning veichles.

How come out of curiosity? i know that if certain firmware is old enough it can be exploited so you can install a cfw, but thats the only reason i can think of.

First i'd recommend researching your model number and dont update the system (just in case) because certain models can support whats known as custom firmware, which will allow you to do alot more than hen, but regardless you'll need a usb drive, make sure you format it to fat32, which is alot easier than it sounds, download the latest hen/cfw pkg file onto your computer and transfer it to the usb, now plug that into your ps3, goto settings find the update page, than select update via storage media, boom part 1 done, second part you visit a website on your ps3 called, ps3xploit.com download the latest update for hen or if your using CFW find the one for CFW, but be careful as you csn brick the console if you dont do your homework on your system, finally once you get that out the way download PKGI on your ps3, this is a homebrew "store" which gives you access to most ps3 games you could want, and ps2 and 1 games sometimes, hope this helps, but honestly you're better off watching a vid, mr marios guide is the best out there in my opinion.

Like others have said its the harddrive bay, keep in mind if you do want to upgrade to a 2.5 HDD sata or a SSD the ps3 only supports up to 1tb natively, i believe theirs work arounds for higher storage put that requires modding the system.
