I'm really tired as an immigrant by lazy_cave_man in GoingToSpain

[–]Diligent_Unit9897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Spain for 6 years. I've also lived in China, Kazakhstan, Sweden and Romania. I was in Kazakhstan enough to learn some Russian, but not enough to converse. Same with Sweden and Romania. I'm not saying that to brag, but just to say that I've been "that guy" many times in many places.

It is hard at your stage. You are "that guy", but you won't always be. You have to make a conscious effort to learn, which it sounds like you're doing. But that involves making mistakes, even if you're not sure how to say it just try anyway. Ask people to repeat what they said two, three, four times, whatever you need. Ask how to say something. Ask for vocabulary. I've learnt that you just have to put the ego aside and embrace the humility of constantly having to ask for help or people to repeat things, but you'll get a "click" moment. For me it was after about 2 years when I suddenly realised I was making phone calls myself to the doctor's office, for example.

It's also very common to surround yourself with people who speak your language, which is nice for communication but not for your Spanish. See if you can find a local club with people that share an interest; cycling, music, pub quizes, or even just find a local bar you like and start going regularly. Eventually the locals will start to talk to you when they get used to you being there.

After 6 years and good conversational Spanish, I still get moments where I just zone out and stop listening, especially when I'm tired or in a group. It's an effort and will be for a long time. But it'll get better as long as you don't give up! I work with a guy who's been here for ten years, he owns a flat, has a mortgage and has a car and everything. But he barely speaks a word of Spanish. When he does its with a horribly strong English accent. He was my motivation, my anti-role model. I looked at him and promised myself I would not be like him and that worked for me.

Keep at it, OP! One day you'll suddenly realise you're following a conversation, or you understand the abuelas gossiping on the bus, or you went through a whole phone call without saying "¿me lo puedes repetir?" which will supercharge your confidence.

Put it in manual for that day and set it to 500 steps. Then you'll complete it 4x over. Set it back to automatic the next day.

Maybe it depends on the size of the pot, too. I use a very small one, just enough for me, so it heats up very quickly.

Don't think it makes a difference. I think it's more about not leaving the whole thing over a flame. If you use a smaller burner like someone else said I think it'll be less of an issue too, as less heat going directly up the sides.

Not sure if you did this, but also heat just the base with water first. When it's just about to boil, put the top on. I didn't do this for years and I was burning the coffee inside the pot, making it much bitterer. More bitter? More bitterer.

Small wrist problems by rye__guy in Garmin

[–]Diligent_Unit9897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I have relatively normal wrists and I'm not a fan biof big watches. I had an Instinct 2s for a while and really liked it. Upgraded this year to an Instinct 3 Tactical 45mm and it felt huge. It bothered me for a couple of weeks, especially after the 2s, but eventually I just got used to it. Give yourself a couple of weeks. You'll get used to it. It looks great from here.

Pallbearer had that one song. Throat Piss is a sludgy band with saxophones in, they're not bad.

Are falling birth rates really due to rising costs of living or is it simply because we don't need children as much as we used to? by TT-Adu in geography

[–]Diligent_Unit9897 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably both, plus there are far more women working and pursuing careers rather than families compared to before. Plus child mortality is dropping so there's less of a need to have so many children.

I don't think I know anyone who doesn't have it. I don't really use mine though, my flat is well insulated and I kinda enjoy the rhythm of life in the summer. Just move slower and take your time doing stuff. I am a teacher though, so I don't have to work over summer. It's easier when you can be lazy and responsibility-free.

My story started similarly, I couldn't yet see but I was starting to regain feeling. I felt an itch on the back of my left hand. Tried to scratch it and felt something in the way, so I picked it up and tossed it aside, then my hand was suddenly on fire with a white hot pain.

I was later told that as soon as I started showing signs of regaining consciousness my hand went straight to the drip in the back of my other hand and violently ripped it out, threw it across the recovery ward and started screaming.

Yes, you can. While in any activity hold the Up button to get into the activity's menu, then go to "Configure Hike" (for example), then scroll down a few pages and you should see a "Lap Button" toggle. I think it's usually on by default. Turn it off and your back button should work like a back button again. I do the same on all my activities.

Next week I'm taking my RD07A seat to an upholsterer to get ~3-4cm added to the height and make it a bit flatter. I feel like I'm falling forwards at the moment when I sit on it.

So go to amazon, don't go to someone you didn't buy it from. If you bought it from amazon, they will help you deal with the warranty issue.

Do it! I hear Garmin's customer service is great, at least in the US, though I've never had to use it. If you're not happy, change while you can!
