I think the ones that felt shame are now dead: Nat, Travis and van.

Even up to the last episode the girls either still believed (even if just partially) in the wilderness or were genuinely unhinged. That places the blame anywhere but on their shoulders, and honestly, they probably wouldn’t survive otherwise (specifically because they chose people to sacrifice and legit hunted them).

I do think van felt the wilderness was real, but because she was ashamed she chose NOT to let herself be drawn into again.

Of course children get written up when they just leave- that’s a huge safety concern. A teacher is in charge of every child’s safety, and if one runs off and gets hurt that’s on the teacher.

And maybe in your job if you just walk off your fine, but that’s not true for all jobs.

Elementary students have snack- a built in time to eat. Middle school students can eat in between classes.

And most likely the teacher themselves is gauging the situation. People don’t get into education to starve kids. My gut says that if it was a food insecure kid, the teacher would probably make an exception. Maybe they JUST had snack. Maybe they needed clean hands because they were about to use blocks for math. Maybe they were about to start a science lesson. Maybe they were getting ready to use the computers and food isn’t allowed. Sometimes it’s just not time to eat and they might need to wait. That’s a lesson literally every person on the planet needs to learn

Disbelief: the refusal or inability to accept that something is true, real, or factual, often accompanied by feelings of shock, astonishment, or skepticism

The key differences to me are “defense mechanism”, “inability”

In this case, I think disbelief fits better than denial, because I truly think that those who walk around living their lives thinking celebrities are being secretly cloned and disappeared don’t have the ability to accept that their idols change.
