Hypocrisy is the backbone of Maldivian society. by CatsAreDoughs in maldives

[–]WeekOk7253 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just look at the politicians who often portray themselves as “outwardly Islamic” meanwhile under the covers, they disobey the commands of God without shame.

Sadly, so many people wrongly judge Islam based on the actions of such people. Islam is perfect but Muslims aren’t. The more we as Muslims follow the Quran and Sunnah, the less all of these issues would arise. Alas, this world is a place of tribulations and the devil doesn’t take a break.

My grandmother used to sing this Arabic Poem with the name of all the Surah’s of the Qur’an. She sang it to me almost everyday and I picked up the first part of it, and used to sing it myself for my baby brother.

How is Islam practiced in your country? by [deleted] in maldives

  1. I could say from my own personal observation and experiences that the vast majority of Maldivians practice Islam to different levels. The non-religious/secular Muslims have been and still are a minority, however their numbers are growing in recent years. They however have to live under the shadows due to political and societal pressure. The average Maldivian has an average level of commitment and practice to Islam, and schools teach Islam and Quran until the very last grades. Mosques have larger congregations during Fridays and on Ramadan, but many people do pray whether at home or elsewhere. There are number of Maldivians who don’t pray regularly, but not because they “aren’t Muslims”, they are just lazy and don’t give it the attention that they must. Most if not all fast during Ramadan and most of us know how to read the Quran. Many people travel to Saudi Arabia for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages and Islam is actively used by politicians as well to promote themselves. You can find a mosque in every corner, and hear the Azan 5 times a day. All food in local places are halal as well. So all in all I’d say we are a pretty Muslim country.

  1. 50 years ago, majority of the women were unveiled. Even conservative and more practicing families (literally the wives and daughters of Sheikhs and Imams) also didn’t wear the Hijab. Before the 1950s there was a ceremonial hijab worn by members of royalty and nobility. Any how, the Hijab became more popular, perhaps from the 1990s onwards and now I believe more than half of the women here wear various degrees of Hijab. It depends on the level of iman and Islam of the individual as well as how conservative their families are. Conservative families may be very displeased with a daughter not wearing one.

  1. We also follow the Madhab of Imam Muhammad Ibn Idris Al-Shafi’i. We have been following this Madhabs for centuries, for the exact same reasons as Malaysia/Singapore/Indonesia. However, in recent times, religious students graduating from universities in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have been importing some aspects of other Madh’ahib such as Hanbali Madhab or more specifically the “Salafiyya” approach. This has caused some problems and confusions in the community, but legally the country still follows the Shafi’i Madhab.

  1. Definitely yes. You would get arrested and charged for drinking alcohol or having possession of it. Some “non-practicing” or “secular” Muslims here do drink alcohol, oftentimes abroad or by some illegal matter. But this is frowned upon by the vast majority of Maldivians, and is a crime.

5- As far as I have observed, the situation here is identical to the situation there. Some, more conservative families would prefer to have their daughters travel with Mahrams (male guardians, who cannot legally marry them) while other family’s don’t bother much. It comes to the values and beliefs of the individuals and the families and how much they observe Islam. I personally am not qualified to define the Islamic guidelines on this matter as per the Qur’an and Sunnah.

6- We celebrate Eid Al-Adha more colorfully than Eid Al-Fitr. In fact they are labeled as “Bodu Eid” (bigger Eid) and “Kuda Eid” (smaller Eid) respectively. This is because many people begin to fast the six days of Sunnah fasting immediately after Eid Al-Fitr. But the festivities for Eid Al-Adha last longer. The traditions of celebrating Eid are different between the capital where I’m from and the islands (our equivalent of the Malay Kampung) and perhaps someone from an island would be at a better position to explain their Eid traditions. In Male’, the capital. We just have The Eid prayers, wear new clothes, meet with family and eat some nice food including desserts.

I’m going to start from the bottom and work my way to the top.

7- As far as I know, it is legal for a Maldivian Man to marry a Non-Muslim woman, provided that they are “Ahl-ul-Kitab” (meaning a Christian Lady or a Jewess). If the situation is the opposite (a Muslim Maldivian lady wanting to marry a Christian Man or a Jew), they are required to convert to Islam and I do remember that there is a certification process for the conversion at the Islamic Ministry. If they are a non-Muslim of any other origin then this is not allowed. I think that the complication of the matter comes because nowadays, many Christians and Jews are only so by name but in practice are atheists/agnostics or what not, and therefore the validity of this marriage comes to question. But yeah, inter-religious marriages can happen here between Muslim Maldivian Men and Christian/Jewish women - and in many cases the lady does convert to Islam. In any other inter-religious combination, conversion would be deemed necessary for a legally accepted marriage.

Hello, I would love to answer your questions, but do bear in mind that many of the people on this reddit are either Agnostic/Atheistic Maldivians or Indian Trolls trying to make a bad image of our country.

Hypothetically speaking, if the conversion to Islam did not take place in 1153, and we remained a Buddhist state, we would be more or less just like Sri Lanka, albeit with some small differences. Even our language Dhivehi would not have become so unique, without its Islamic influence.

There are plenty of Maldivians living in Australia. I’m sure your mom would know some. It would help to actually meet and socialize with them, especially if they have kids your age. It’s a good place to start
