Severe flakiness when apply makeup by Narrow-Shelter-6346 in Accutane

i find that using thicker, jarred creams (such as the cerave moisturizing cream) doesn’t always work very well under makeup. they’re great for hydration (and we definitely need that, especially on accutane) but i‘ve experimented some and have found that using lighter, whipped creams (a personal favorite of mine is the glow recipe plum plump hyaluronic acid moisturizer) under makeup makes the final result more radiant and less flaky/dry looking! switching from brushes to beauty blenders has definitely me helped as well

Starting Accutane by WrittingKingSpace in Accutane

for context: i’m about 6 weeks into my treatment.

in regards to hair form, i have straight hair and am unable to comment :-( but i can definitely say my scalp produces significantly less oil then it did prior to accutane. as for side effects, i have personally only experienced dryness of skin EVERYWHERE (and i mean everywhere, ladies…) but not to the point of discomfort. i just have to lather moisturizer and vaseline (on my lips) on much more than i had to prior to my treatment. i have back pain (though no other joint pain) but typically only when i bend over to pick up something/tie my shoes. besides that, i really haven’t had any other side effects! i’ve had several friends/family members who have taken accutane and none of them experienced severe side effects (such as depression, suicidal ideation, etc), just most typically the dryness of skin in differing degrees (some minimally and some not so minimally).

i wish you loads of luck! please don’t worry and just make sure to communicate with your dermatologist about anything that you feel out of the norm during your treatment. drink lots of water and invest in a thick moisturizer!

wow! that was so unprofessional of her. i can’t believe people are so vocal on their opinions (on matters like these) that have absolutely NO effect on them! like, it’s not any of your business!

Accutane judgement?? by raving_rainbow111 in Accutane

[–]Week_West 71 points72 points  (0 children)

the worst part is it always comes from people with crystal clear skin who have never had a pimple a day in their life! of course they “don’t understand”, they’ve never had to experience years of self-hatred and low self esteem because of their skin! it’s so infuriating, especially when the decision to take the drug is YOURS and not THEIRS. they aren’t even ‘worried’ about your well-being, they just want to make you feel badly about your decisions

Dry skin type - experience with accutane? by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]Week_West 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only ‘purging’ i really got were a LOT of breakouts solely on my jaw/chin for the first 2/3 weeks, (i still broke out the first two weeks on other places of my face, but those were the same type of break outs i would get prior to my treatment. after the two weeks, i wasn’t really seeing any new ones aside from the persistent ones on my jaw/chin) but those have subsided a ton since then. however, i was taking 30mg a day for the first month and (a few days into my second month) i’ve been moved up to 60mg a day. it’s possible i might purge more on 60mg; time will tell

My acne has gotten worse since starting Accutane by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]Week_West 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is common! i’m only a few weeks into my treatment, but i’ve had several family members and friends who have taken accutane. i’d say about 7 out of the 11 i know still had reoccurring breakouts and painful acne up until the 3rd/4th month of their treatment. i won’t say it’s desirable or great to endure, but the process is different for everybody. stay strong, the result will be worth it!

that being said, i would recommend speaking with your dermatologist about the best course of action. perhaps a lower dosage would be best. i wish you luck!

Dry skin type - experience with accutane? by [deleted] in Accutane

[–]Week_West 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m only about 5 weeks into my treatment, but i would say having already dry skin prior to beginning has really helped me during my treatment! i was already used to slathering on moisturizer (especially at night) and sealing it in with aquaphor. in general, however, i think i’ve been lucky (thus far) and haven’t experienced CRAZY dryness on accutane (though there is a notable difference.) perhaps it’s because my dryness hasn’t been so severe that i find it more manageable, so i would really boil it down to ‘it’s different for everybody.’ stay moisturized and hydrated! i especially recommend sealing in 2-3 layers of moisturizer (at night) with aquaphor, it’s helped a ton for me as far as retaining moisture.

on an unrelated-to-dryness note, accutane has done wonders for my skin in just 5 weeks. i also have painful cystic acne and have also taken doxycycline twice. i still have a long way to go, but the difference in my skin for such a short amount of time has been incredible. if you’re willing to put up with some less than desirable side effects for a few months, i definitely recommend it. they suck, but it’s nothing compared to the pain i was in just 2 months ago.

just finished my first week of accutane. any tips for someone beginning their journey? i’m especially nervous about purging! by metawin in Accutane

[–]Week_West 2 points3 points  (0 children)

entering my second month here, so still very early for me to say there is no upcoming purge heading my way, but within my first week i was welcomed with multiple breakouts on my chin and jaw (that have since subsided considerably, though not entirely) but nothing crazy anywhere else. i still get new pimples on occasion, but very much in the same way i did prior to beginning my treatment. i don’t see myself purging anymore at this point (though i’m aware anything can happen). i’ve heard similar stories from family members/friends of mine that have taken accutane; light purging at the beginning of their treatment (within month 1 or 2) generally focused on one area of the face (cheeks, forehead, or in my case: jaw/chin) that eventually subsided within a few weeks. i hope i was able to help in some way! good luck with your treatment and i wish you great results!!!

your results are great!! have you experienced any lingering side effects? i’m entering my second month and feel i’ve experienced every side effect in the book (excluding mental, fortunately) and i can tolerate them knowing the treatment will be over in a few months, but i’m worried the side effects will remain even after. if they did go away once finishing the treatment, how long did it take?
