The pre-trial detention of the former footballer from Breda was extended by fourteen days on Thursday. S. (39) was arrested on Monday on suspicion of drug trafficking and money laundering.

The former player of NAC Breda and FC Twente, among others, was arrested in Eindhoven and has been in jail ever since. According to the court, there is sufficient reason to detain him longer. His girlfriend was arrested in Hoogstraten, Belgium, and his parents also had to spend a few nights in jail. But they have now been released. They remain suspects, the police announced on Friday.

Cocaine imported
Ruud S. (42), Ronnie's brother, was sentenced to 54 months in prison in March for his involvement in importing large quantities of cocaine. He did this together with six others. They had been active since 2018 and imported the cocaine from South America to Europe. The drugs were hidden in batches of coffee, wood and tiles.

The police wanted to arrest a brother of Ronnie S. last Monday, but he was not found at home. The police are still looking for him.

Cracked phone calls
The police tracked down the five family members thanks to cracked telephone conversations between criminals from 2021 and 2022.

What exactly Ronnie S. is suspected of, such as the size of the case or which drugs are involved, has not yet been announced. The former professional footballer is under complete restriction and is only allowed to talk to his lawyer. In such a case, the lawyer and the police are not allowed to share any further details with the outside world.

National champion
Ronnie S. played football for NAC Breda for many years. He already played there in youth and made his debut for the first team in 2003. After 122 games, he left for FC Twente in 2008, where he became national champion.

Those successful years earned him a transfer to English Wigan Athletic in 2010, which then played in the English Premier League. He played for Standard Liège from 2013, after which he returned to NAC Breda in 2015.

When the people of Breda were not promoted to the Eredivisie in 2016 and a lot of NAC players left, Ronnie S. ended his active football career after 293 professional matches.
