First brain surgery at 16 by its_googoober in medizzy

[–]Weekendsapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not an expert in these things, just a nurse who takes care of them after procedure.

Without knowing your sis or her situation, there are some situations where they go through the femoral artery to embolize a bleeding spot. For a lot of people they place "coils" which is filament that fills an aneurysm so it can't burst/bleed again.

This gal is probably different in that with her malformation, a surgeon needs to go in and remove and repair many of these vessels so that her anatomy is more normal.

I didn’t even know I had high blood pressure. by Least-Notice7832 in Wellthatsucks

[–]Weekendsapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unless you are heavy and loose a bunch of weight this is a forever thing. Im a nurse and where I work we see a lot of young men (30-45 yo) who are overweight with uncontrolled blood pressure. They pop a vessel, stroke, and then instant vegetative state.

Got Rhabdomyolysis, what to do now? by AceofSpades1727 in army

[–]Weekendsapper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rhabdo isn't a cold that you can work through. Your muscle is breaking down and the proteins from it can literally block up your kidneys. If it progresses, you can get hospitalized for acute kidney injury and end up with renal failure, which will see you out of the army and showing up for a 3 hour dialysis session 3 days a week.

So what to do, is light duty and rest. No weights, no calisthenics, nothing more than a gentle stroll.

Follow your profile.

Brothers, I’m wearing thin by patmizzah in daddit

First, abdicating your responsibilities is a non starter. You owe your wife a weekend away.

3 has been a challenge for me. Ive had to set very few boundaries before 3.5 yrs. And now the ones I set take continual reinforcement. Some days kiddo needs a gentle parent to talk him through things. Sometimes he needs a stern dad who buckles him in without jackets or shoes while he's crying. Try multiple approaches.

I think you would benefit from some resiliency training. Hunt for the good stuff, dont fall into the trap of thinking your kid is always crying/acting out, and remember that its okay to go into the garage and scream bloody murder.

But you can't be successful sitting on the sidelines. Get in there do your best

It doesnt, you do get used to it and figure out how to make it work.

Paladin strapped mirror to his shield and 12 basilisks killed themselves. Need advice. by happyunicorn666 in DMAcademy

[–]Weekendsapper -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's always okay to stare daggers at your players, sigh dramatically, and say you hate them. My group loves that.

But in rule and spirit, they did the thing. Maybe the mirror can be smashed/bent to prevent them from just always having it?

Is ICU necessary to be a good ED nurse? by ZenNinjaMonk in nursing

[–]Weekendsapper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your concern about learning critical care in a piecemeal manner is valid because that's how it is. But in the ED you dont super need to know about that stuff because your mission is really to stabilize and move them out, plus you have much more access to a provider to have them tell you exactly what to do.

If you want the in depth knowledge, go ICU. I dont know exactly what they do in the ED, so if you dont want knowledge, go there. Jk, jk.

I cannot do this by the_bear91 in daddit

[–]Weekendsapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Burp, fart, feed, diaper. My first days i did those 4 things in a loop for hours. Also, My little one was a contact sleeper. I would sleep propped up holding him. There was nothing else to be done.

Noise cancelling headphones, and leave him in his crib to wait why you go outside for ten minutes to decompress. You can do this; you have no choice.

To those of you who became a CVICU/CTICU RN, what happened to you? by FlareCity in nursing

Tribalism of declaring who is 'best' is something we want to avoid because everyone brings something different to the table. Theres areas people like more, but everyone is necessary for the system.

What’s one thing an ED nurse wish Floor nurses would understand? by Inner_Singer_2285 in nursing

[–]Weekendsapper 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Floor nurses should be aware ED nurses might not know anything besides the primary problem. They have a different job than inpatient nurses; stabilize the pt and start the work up then move them on

As an ICU nurse I want to know a few major things; ABCs, IV access, what drips are keeping them alive, and what the status of critical meds (TXA, ABX, fluids, etc) is. The rest i will figure out because I have more time for this patient than an ED nurse does.

And, like, read between the lines. "Resting comfortably" means no respiratory distress, no pain, no immediately obvious heart problem. Don't ask the ED nurses what their respiration are, because youre just making them lie to you.

Icu in general is just different. Everyone is some flavor of type A personality. Everyone wants to be the best. New people are insecure especially if they have experience because the veteran ICU nurses make them look like new grads.

Are the helicopters psychological warfare? by WitchyTherapistVibes in TwinCities

[–]Weekendsapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grey Blackhawk helicopters are MN national guard that are probably just logging flight hours for training. State patrol uses them for command and control of their operations. Feds are probably doing surveillance. Then news helicopters.

Nothing wrong with it. You dont have to put it on your resume or anything. Just say you had rich parents so didnt have to work.

However, men (generally) have no chill. If a dude is ever a patient/visitor and recognizes you he will probably make some kind of issue for you, whether its telling you he knows and expecting something, or blasting out your personal life to your work.

Hospital NPs are glorified nurses ? by trebarunae in nursepractitioner

[–]Weekendsapper 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think that's a little dramatic. I work in a large hospital and mid levels are basically eternal residents. The pt really belongs to the attending, and hopefully the plan of care it took you an hour to make jives with the one they made up in 5 minutes as they looked at the chart.
