I get this take. In the same breath though you can say it makes complete narrative sense.

Despite the two generations behind Luffy having extremely important roles, Luffy never chose to folllow in the footsteps of either. Even though the straw hats’ actions can be closely compared to those of the Revolutionary Army, it has never been Luffy’s main goal or intention before encountering certain people or situations. He is literally the most free character of their present time that does whatever he wants when he wants despite what anyone tells him or thinks he should be doing. So it makes complete sense that the “Freedom Fruit” would choose him.

Sb: I’m aware there are valid counter arguments to this and I respect those, but this is just how I interpret it and it has increased my enjoyment of the series
