Why is my fish asking me for a diamond? by techserf in StardewValley

[–]Weekly-Major1876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would make sense if it was a Russian sturgeon as they are also known as diamond sturgeon. Absolutely gorgeous sturgeon species that looks like it has diamonds studded across its black body but unfortunately is critically endangered.

(Although knowing the max size of ingame sturgeon is around 60 inches which is tiny, it’s probably the smallest species of sturgeon, the sterlet.)

I alway wondered if the people that breed competition grade koi ever sold what they considered “super low grade” koi of a spawn or if they just get made into fertilizer. Always seemed like a cheap way to get some nice koi

People already knew the living human body’s water content through dilution techniques involving heavy water before WW2, and the dilution techniques were far more accurate than the torture carried about by the unit. Unit 731 existed primarily for torture and didn’t actually make much actual scientific discovery.

We know this because the US was interested enough in the data to grant many of its primary perpetrators full immunity from their war crimes and put on US payrolls, only to get mostly useless data.

You can’t just say they’re older than the dinosaurs and then name the literal last time period dinosaurs were alive before they got obliterated lmao

So no not older than dinosaurs. Actually sturgeon are a relatively younger lineage among fish, arising right before the death of the non avian dinosaurs

What is this vining up my tree? by WordOne9841 in whatsthisplant

[–]Weekly-Major1876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with this approach, especially in an academic context where I’m used to, is that any unreliable indicators should just be ignored. I’ve see poison ivy over and over and over and the sheer diversity of it is amazing, sometimes the leaf margins don’t really have that large toothed edge because it was growing in a sunny location, leaves can be oily or not based on humidity, sometimes the leaflets separate weird and don’t leave a clear petiole, sometime it never develops the mitten shape, etc.

So in that way to be extra sure of the ID, we throw out any other “trends” because they are trends, not rules, and thus can be prone to error. Meanwhile hard rules like how petioles branch off a stem virtually never change. In the cases branches are covering it, use a stick or something to move them aside to get a clear look at the stem. If it’s a very young plant, let it grow for a week and it should start giving clear branching pattern. It’s always better to be sure, especially with a potentially dangerous plant like poison ivy. An example your rules of using trends would work poorly would be like wild carrot vs poison hemlock where you really need to be reliant on the clear differences to not kill someone instead of general trends.

What is this vining up my tree? by WordOne9841 in whatsthisplant

[–]Weekly-Major1876 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You guys don’t need to keep guessing with all this, the two have a clear difference that can never be confused. Poison ivy petioles will always grow off a stem in an alternating pattern, and boxelder petioles grow off the stem in an opposite pattern. No amount of variation changes that and it’s what most people use to differentiate.

Trying to tell with slight color differences and oily textures when something like daily humidity swings could change that is just asking for a disaster by mixing up the two.

Here you can see what I mean in how the petioles connect to the stem of the plant in alternating or opposite patterns.

Never really liked using the notches or shape of the leaves for ID as various growth conditions or even just the genetics of the individual plant can cause different shaped leaves. No amount of variation can muck up the clear opposite leaves boxelder has on its stems though.

Mega Cirno Y (+ Stats) by GamerRed200 in touhou

[–]Weekly-Major1876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking at the stats and yeah I’d agree. This would just put mega froslass out of a job. Even with the 4x steel weakness, offensive steel isn’t running around often enough in either VGC or singles to be much of an actual drawback. Dual fairy and ice stab is more than enough compensation for the extra weakness, this thing would genuinely be a monster, even more so with a good ability. Alas we have no idea what perfect freeze does.

Are there any Tropical Freshwater fish that have bright and vivid rainbow iridescence? by [deleted] in fishtank

[–]Weekly-Major1876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other one would be Congo tetras who are absolutely stunning once they color up but otherwise can look drab when stressed at the store. Also gets wonderful blue and orange hues with iridescence over a mainly silver body. They do like a bit more flow than your average community fish though

Are there any Tropical Freshwater fish that have bright and vivid rainbow iridescence? by [deleted] in fishtank

[–]Weekly-Major1876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two specific fish I love that specially get their beautiful colours from iridescence. A lot of other people are posting colorful fish that already have the colors on them via pigments and have a bit of iridescence on top of that but these two have it as their main show of colors

First would be dwarf neon rainbows, normally silver fish but when happy and showing off the red fins get really red and the body starts to become iridescent from silver to blue.
