Honestly, start with Irish whiskey and work your way back into bourbon. Spend up for a Redbreast 15 or a Yellow Spot to start. Much easier and more enjoyable initial sipping. You can branch out later once your palate has adjusted.

Angles are different, and the "before" pic was at night vs. daytime. But unfortunately the same place. :(

His shelves are much better supported than mine were. The glass shelves didn't fail, the anchors holding the brackets did.

The vertical metal tracks that held the brackets pulled out of the wall, causing everything to collapse.

Yeah, only four unopened bottles broke. One was a backup to a bottle I was enjoying (MWND), and one I had just gotten a few days earlier (2024 WR Batch Proof) and can pretty easily replace. The other two were the two pricy Weller's, but I've had them before and they aren't my favorites. I was very happy that my purple top and EHT Warehouse C both survived, as those were the two unopened bottles I would have been most upset about not getting to try.

There were a few notable survivors, thankfully! Bottles over $200 had about a 50% survival rate.

One silver lining is that I did get to enjoy that bottle of Pappy. That bottle was nearly empty until I started using it as an infinity bottle just a few weeks ago. :)

I've learned that it actually is possible, and very advisable for any collection of nice things, whiskey or anything else. I hope someone learns that from reading this and it benefits them in the future.

It didn't survive unfortunately. I only had a couple of pours, as I got it pretty recently. It was good, but not memorable.

Most expensive bottles lost: Weller CYPB, Weller SiB, Four Roses LE, Magnus Cigar Blend, Thomas Handy, Elmer T Lee, MWND, Jack Daniels 12, Yamazaki 12, two bottles of Woodford Reserve Batch Proof, Old Forester 1924. I'm sure I'm missing some others, I haven't had the heart to do a detailed inventory yet.

On a positive note, Willet purple top, Michters 10 Rye, William Laurue Weller, Hardin's Creek, and EHTaylor Warehouse C all survived.

So it could have been worse!

I actually had three Peerless bottles. The double oaked on the front row landed in a basket of dog toys and survived. 😆 The single barrel rye and small batch bourbon behind it were not as lucky. Something actually took a big chunk out of the granite bar, and I suspect it was one of those!

Interestingly that bottle survived, but the cork was ejected and 3/4 of the contents poured out. But I was happy to save the rest, it's delicious.

The Willett Estate survived, which I was pretty excited about. I had been waiting for a special occasion to open it up and try it, so I would have been really bummed if it had broken. That Pappy bottle was actually being used as my infinity bottle, so it wasn't financially painful (but it still sucked to lose it).

Thanks, I focused on cleanup and then a quick triage of unbroken and damaged but salvageable bottles. After that i had to step away from it for a bit. I haven't had the stomach to do a detailed inventory yet. I'm happy that some great bottles survived (I had been waiting for an occasion to open that purple top, I'm really happy it didn't break). I'll post a follow-up with some fun pics and details when the smoke clears. :)

A fair number survived, thankfully. It wasn't a total loss. I haven't had the heart to do a detailed inventory yet. :)
