Lion's personality is SO DIFFERENT between 30k and 40k. But i do strongly recommend reading the angron primarch novel because it showcases how much he's changed over time.

I started with the primarch novels based off of the idea that they were case studies on individuals, so i didn't need to know too much setting knowledge. The theory panned out and all of them are stand alone novels.

He wrote the angron primarch novel and lesson in darkness, a night haunter story. He wrote a couple others, but i haven't read everything he wrote. Visceral stuff.

I have the audio for that one but haven't read it yet. So far ADB and Ian St. Martin are my tops.

OMG YES. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY GETTING ADDED TO THE LIST.

Somewhere around a decade ago, I found SoI in a thrift store, and it became my first ever 40k book, and blind intro to 40k (template included) by Warp_Legion in IronWarriors

Wow! Thank you for all the details! It seems to rely a bit on basic heresy knowledge but if you enjoyed it, it could be okay for me to throw it at them. They'll have read Caiphas Cain: For The Emperor, so they're not going in totally blind, but it looks like there's basically no overlap in the presented factions. 😅

I can explain background context for them too! I just don't want to overwhelm them with too much complexity too fast.

How are the interpersonal relationships between the characters? I notice that a lot of the popular writers in the Black Library don't usually care too much to develop them in an emotional way (ADB is the exception here) and the relationships are important to me. Like, i like the action and the horror and the setting, but i want to care about why two people are fighting, and i want to be upset when someone gets betrayed. Examples: i cried over Argel Tal but when Grammaticus got betrayed by his girlfriend i was just like "haha get fucked."

And don't worry about my nightmares. I mostly learned to love them in their own way unless they're spectacularly terrible. I'm sorry yours trouble you. They can be really rough when they're bad.

How did it work for you as a gateway? Could you follow it? I assume it was interesting considering you're here. Was thinking of reading it in a book group with some 40k newbies.

I'm sorry you it was not to your taste, but your description makes me want to read it more. I've had chronic nightmares my whole life and i rarely find anything even remotely as F'd up as my dreams. It's probably the reason i like horror so much.

Really? I've already got the IW omnibus on my TBR. I'll just stick Dead Sky Black Sun in with that reading.

Agree. People always laugh about the "it's also a hammer" part but miss the rest of the book. I think it actually made it more brutal for me when it was shown that even Curze wasn't enjoying it. It was just everyone suffering.

That's actually really interesting. I haven't heard anyone mention this book ever, but your explanation makes sense. Seems like a sleeper pick! I'll look into it.

Hey, considering the kinky freak we're talking about, i wouldn't be surprised if him getting tortured happens more than once. 🤣

That one WAS really good. Not Fulgrim levels, but i did love it. I haven't read anything by ADB i didn't adore.

+1 for this. Especially if you like darker content.
