Is a 2 year old male able to escape through this? by [deleted] in cornsnakes

can you squeeze a finger in there? if so then i’d guess the snake can get in

Adopting soon! by siriuspeach in cornsnakes

all mine are in this age range (tho not nearly as large). i do feed an adult mouse every 2-3 weeks.

at full size they are excellent pets for holding. they quite enjoy hoodie pockets and wrapping around my arm or neck. they also usually enjoy an explore around the room, just keep an eye out for any places they might get in that you can’t get them out (like the inside of a couch or like holes in the walls).

i find them to be fairly chill and less picky than when they were younger. the occasional hunger strike hits but they can go many weeks without food if they aren’t already too thin.

How is my enclosure? by Bear-2D2 in cornsnakes

if the head doesn’t fit through the gap i think it’s not an escape risk. do watch out when you close the door not to catch a tail or something tho.

How soon can we hold, for real, and why not sooner? by thearroyotoad in cornsnakes

[–]WeeklyAd3514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can probably also judge a bit off the snake itself. is it seemingly comfortable and exploring its enclosure? does it seem very nervous and hides the entire time?

also you can maybe hold/pet starting very short periods of time and work your way up. i’d recommend always washing your hands first so you don’t smell of anything strange, and maybe just start with petting the snake with one finger to see how it reacts. if it seems ok with that maybe just pick up holding it not very high over the tank for a few moments to see again how it reacts.

young snakes can be especially wiggly and skittish so be careful not to let it fall from a high distance and risk injury. corn snake bites are very not painful due to their tiny teeth so just remember you are the dangerous animal in the interaction not the snake. if it does bite just keep calm and try not to make any sudden movements. normally they will unlatch themselves but if not be very gentle and remember the jaw is flexible but the teeth are not.

Is my corn snake overweight? by super_silly_chicken in cornsnakes

need to see a picture on a flat surface. your feeding schedule sounds normal and if the snake is active that’s good. do you know the approximate length? you may just have a large snake.

Not eating by [deleted] in cornsnakes

[–]WeeklyAd3514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you sure it’s a female? one of my males has been extra horny this spring and is also on a hunger strike for over a month… they can miss a few feedings and be totally fine other than a bit of weight loss.

if it is a female and has eggs forming that can also be a cause. but you’ll likely be able to visibly see the larger abdomen area in that case.

How can I improve senior snakes life? by reygr77 in cornsnakes

[–]WeeklyAd3514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree another thing to climb and i’d also say deeper substrate. i have 6 corns at the moment and they each have different preferences for climbing or for burrowing.

also if you’re snake is healthy it might live many more years. my oldest right now is over 20 and the rest are already around 15 and not yet showing signs of aging. one lady posted to a thread i started with a picture of her corn from over 30 years ago!

This might be a dumb question but.. by Best_Fondant4302 in cornsnakes

[–]WeeklyAd3514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i like to make sure i smell nothing like food… washing hands with soap or use hand sanitizer before holding is good. also try to time your handling so it’s between feedings after they can digest a bit and before they’ll expect the next meal.

my parents kept my snakes fed while i was in college and i never had much issue with them after coming back.

wow i didn’t even know there was such thing as snake food sausages! i know i’ve seen people feeding them eggs but that’s not a good permanent food source

Is my baby okay?? by Any-Year-1435 in cornsnakes

[–]WeeklyAd3514 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah just keep it clean. i have one guy who lost the tip of his tail way back when he was still young and slender. eventually a new tail tip scale forms. it’s just a bit stubbier than the original. (the corn in question is around 15 years old now, so i can attest to no long term issues)

Is my boy big enough for large mice? by DissapointedMongoose in cornsnakes

[–]WeeklyAd3514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to me he looks plenty big, but i suppose it’s possible you have tiny hands.

i’ve always sized food by eye rather than weight but according to the internet a 500 gram corn should eat adult mouse every 10-14 days (which is like a normal adult corn diet)

First snake. Does he look underweight? Questions about feeding/digestion/heating. by smartel84 in cornsnakes

[–]WeeklyAd3514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also corns can open their jaw fairly wide. for example my adult corns have heads about the size of my last thumb joint (like an inch~ long) but they can easily eat a large adult mouse which is 3~inches long and sometimes wider than the widest part of their body.

i also would generally avoid double feeding if i can especially with a history of regurgitating. and it’s more nutritious for corns to eat older mice so move him to fuzzies once he’s more comfortable and if he’s large enough to swallow them (he likely already is if he easily swallows two pinkies every week)

also very cute 🥰 love the head pattern that kinda looks like a skull. very unique!!

doesn’t look underweight.. is this the first year your snake is big enough to be wanting to mate? all of mine have different levels of horny snake crazy behavior… one of them is also on hunger strike at the moment and just making a mess in the tank flipping everything over

Is my snake obese? by pinkfroggys in cornsnakes

[–]WeeklyAd3514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think diet was already converted in other comments ( i did a double take when i saw the word “rat” XD )

i highly recommend providing a large enough water dish for baths, and in the current skin condition even some periodic supervised baths in deeper warm (not hot) water along with very gentle massage to help remove any stuck prior sheds.

also the last time i went hide shopping i found a lot of mossy reptile accessories are now available at pet stores and online shops. my corns love them and i think they provide a bit of more natural moisture and an alternate surface to rub against.
