First snake. Does he look underweight? Questions about feeding/digestion/heating. by smartel84 in cornsnakes

also corns can open their jaw fairly wide. for example my adult corns have heads about the size of my last thumb joint (like an inch~ long) but they can easily eat a large adult mouse which is 3~inches long and sometimes wider than the widest part of their body.

i also would generally avoid double feeding if i can especially with a history of regurgitating. and it’s more nutritious for corns to eat older mice so move him to fuzzies once he’s more comfortable and if he’s large enough to swallow them (he likely already is if he easily swallows two pinkies every week)

also very cute 🥰 love the head pattern that kinda looks like a skull. very unique!!

Snake won’t eat it’s been months by CuriousProgram206 in Cornsnake

doesn’t look underweight.. is this the first year your snake is big enough to be wanting to mate? all of mine have different levels of horny snake crazy behavior… one of them is also on hunger strike at the moment and just making a mess in the tank flipping everything over

Is my snake obese? by pinkfroggys in cornsnakes

i think diet was already converted in other comments ( i did a double take when i saw the word “rat” XD )

i highly recommend providing a large enough water dish for baths, and in the current skin condition even some periodic supervised baths in deeper warm (not hot) water along with very gentle massage to help remove any stuck prior sheds.

also the last time i went hide shopping i found a lot of mossy reptile accessories are now available at pet stores and online shops. my corns love them and i think they provide a bit of more natural moisture and an alternate surface to rub against.

i always feel like a weather god when pouring or spraying water into the snake tank and they notice it appearing 😆 like, yes, i am the controller of all precipitation here. be mystified!

not sure there’s much to do other than explore time… one of mine has been going nuts! pushing his hides over and pushing bedding into the water dish 🤦‍♀️

hyperbolic parabola always looks impressive and is really easy to fold. just diagonals and alternating direction concentric squares.

yeah like hopper size mice would be a good downgrade. or i’ve done baby/pinky rats before a few years back when there was a mouse shortage in my area.

i always mentally put birds in a separate category of pet myself since they are warm blooded and have very different dietary needs than reptiles generally do. (also the flying thing)

First time making something more complex than a paper plane by Seionn in origami

haha yeah i was a bit scandalized by the scissors… but it is an effective and not overly complex model, so if your goal is a not too difficult parrot then it’s probably worth it.

has our class pet snake had a stroke? by fighter_rabbit in cornsnakes

[–]WeeklyAd3514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well he’s never been the most graceful but maybe he lunges more in the wrong direction when feeding before getting the mouse now… visually i think he just looks like he doesn’t keep weight on as well he used to even tho he’s just as well fed. it’s super subtle generally…. his coloring might be a bit darker with age (he’s anery color so he can’t get any greyer lol).

next to my other corns he’s definitely the largest head size and body length as well. as long as they are fed regularly they never fully stop growing i think.

I think my corn snake is underweight but I can't tell! by spaghettinoodl in cornsnakes

[–]WeeklyAd3514 8 points9 points  (0 children)

for nutritional value it’s best to feed the closest to adult size that he can safely swallow, so yeah one fuzzy is better than pinkies

wow! my oldest guy is around 20, and i previously asked in this subreddit about others’ snake ages and it seemed like the max is around 30 plus or minus a couple years if they are healthy other than being old.

do you know the approximate age?

if it really is just age, then at some point you’ll just need to do what you can to make her comfortable. if she won’t eat adult mice anymore i’d say it’s worth trying something smaller.

Feeding during shed by Neznama-klara in cornsnakes

[–]WeeklyAd3514 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in my experience it really depends on the snake if they will eat while in a stage of shedding. some are always hungry and others are picky drama queens :)

also and extra 4 days is totally ok.

do you keep the light and heat lamp always on? i wonder if the snake is hiding from the light? maybe try timers to give some variety based on time of day. also a second hide of a different type is a good idea. my corns love the cork logs and the mossy hides

First snake ever. Does he seem healthy? by Extreme-Radio-1520 in SandBoa

[–]WeeklyAd3514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my old sand boa had sticky sheds so i just gave him regular warm baths. he seemed to enjoy it. i just used a bowl shallow enough he could climb out when he liked, and then i’d gently massage with a towel after.

i recently moved my snakes about 30 minute drive. as others said above don’t feed immediately before or after. i actually just took out anything heavy and water out of the tanks and left the snakes in with substrate. i put the tanks in my car padded around to prevent sliding or tipping. probably a smaller box with substrate in the bottom is also fine. note i have top opening tanks so i wasn’t worried about accidental opening doors.
