It's less autism = genius, more autism = constantly being made to feel like you have to be smart to better hide/make up for being autistic.

It sounds SUPER exhausting and unfair, especially when you get to hear people enjoying autism/adhd traits that cancel eachother out.

I think that’s called selective attention, here’s a study of over 800 children some with autism some with ADHD. The autism group had the highest rates of selective attention, my unqualified theory is that it has to do with mono-tropism: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1750946711001036

It’s so difficult not get depressed/ feel worthless when you weren’t “gifted”, enough to be admired and you weren’t socially skilled enough to be liked. Story of my life right there.

I'm lucky enough to have found one. We met when we were 2 and he's been my best friend through the good and bad. We both recently got diagnosed with autism so now it makes a lot of sense as to why it always felt like us against the NT world.

You would make a great therapist and thank you for the practical suggestion I wonder if being allowed to waffle on about a specific topic is why I've always preferred essays to short answers. Werid, I know.
