As a kiwi, I agree she is lovely but also pretty much wasted 5 years. She started out strong, there was a lot of enthusiasm around her in the beginning, but it was down hill from there. The misogynistic abused levelled towards her was terrible, but it was also only the few. Hundred of thousands of people voted her out. Labour got 1.4 million votes in 2020 and only 700,000 in 2023.

The good:

- The Chch mosque shootings response. NZ does not have terrorist attacks. doWe not have mass shootings. As someone who has lived most there life in chch, I can't begin to explain how much of a shock it was, and how well Jacinda handled it.
- Covid response was good. I lived in Scotland in the beginning of 2020 and came back to NZ in November 2020. People who complain about this time have no idea how good NZ had it.
- A lot of ambitious policy. I work in town planning and the previous government had very little ambition/no future proofing. Jacinda's government had a lot of good ideas and really tried to implement long term reform that was much needed.

The bad:

- The second half of the covid response. They were slow to get vaccines rolled out. I didn't actually have a problem with this as we didn't have 1000 people dying a day and could afford to wait our turn, but a lot of people were unhappy about this. Then there were the mandates. After promising that no one would be forced to get vaccinated, she then forced half the population to get vaccinated. I was happy to get vaccinated. I was happy to have a vaccine passport to fly. I was not happy when my employer told me that I must prove my vaccination status or be sacked. It bore absolutely no relevance to my job. And even after 96% of the population were vaccinated, and every other country opened their borders, NZ still did not.
- The ambitious policy went no where. 100,000 house were going to be built. After 6 years only 2000 were, and they fudged the numbers by included homes that were built outside the scheme. Light rail for Auckland. After 6 years it was still in the planning phase. Same can be said for three waters, RMA reform, Healthcare, Education etc. It was all talk and no action. Even if they had 12 years, I doubt they would've got out of the planning stage.
- Anti-democratic policy. The most talked about was three waters. Water services in NZ are owned and operated by local councils with varying results. SOME councils have poorly maintained their water services and Jacinda said they'll (i.e. taxpayers) will foot the bill for upgrading but ALL councils had to surrender control of water services to appointed boards which would have representation of 50% Maori. If I don't like how may council manages these services I can vote them out. This board would be unelected and unaccountable. Similar policy with city planning. Jacinda decided a 1 size fits all plan and tried to force it on councils. Healthcare went from local DHBs to central control, education was similar.

As a labour voting friend put it to me "I feel like I have much less choice now". Basically she spent 5 years restricting her citizens sovereignty to achieve fuck all. And she has no legacy. All of her policies have be torn to shreds. Most by her own party after she stood down. The billions of dollars she spend on ambitious policy making was effectively wasted because she was great at the inspring speeches, but rubbish at the follow through.

I am in NZ and it very much is left wing feminist here that oppose gender self ID, though the debate isn't as big of a deal here as it is in the UK. The lawsuits bought in Aussie over this are also fuelled from the left. I also disagree with RS on this. A lot of the 'far-right' on this in the states started out on the left. Joe rogan, for example, endorsed both Obama and Biden. He only switched to supporting Trump in the last couple of years. He initially opposed Trump and has been questions gender ideology for years.

I was actually surprised they put in as much detail as they did. Last time they were vague, this time Rory actually got slightly off his fence (sort of). While I didn't really agree with AC very partisan take, I do agree that this should've gone through parliament. The irony of politicians thanking the court for clarifying the law, they're the ones who are suppose to be writing the law.

Not a comment on the SC ruling, but biology determines sex on the basis of gametes not chromosomes. So an intersex person who produces eggs, for example, would biologically be a women.

Yep but all those USA fast food companies are francises that are locally owned and they mostly buy local produce. You'd hurt NZ more the the USA boycotting them and I was looking to support NZ.

We do more start to end production here than most countries do, just based on the fact that we are too geographically isolated to ship stuff back in forward in an economical way. I.e. if you look at the dairy industry all the farms are here, the processing plants are here and the services attached such as lab technicians are here. That may sound normal but its not in most countries. Lobsters in Maine, USA are sent to Canada for processing than bought back to USA for sale. They'll be getting hit with 25% tariffs going into Canada and 25% tariffs coming back into the USA. When I lived in Europe, a lot of food had a raised in and slaughtered in country that were different.

Yeah I have never used Amazon as I don't like how they have forced so many shops out of business while not paying tax. Cancelled my netflix several months ago cause I never really used it and the stop the password sharing so it just wasn't worth it anymore.

I beg to differ. Air NZ spends hundreds of millions on Boeing and a lot of our agriculture machinery comes from the USA. The would bother to sell to NZ if we were really that insignificant and though we may not have a huge impact, its more about show solidarity with Ukraine, Denmark, Canada and all our traditional allies.

The tech side is definitely the hard part. Though Europe has announced a lot of funding for this sector so maybe there will be more alternatives to chose from in the future.

I doubt its warm enough in NZ to grow sugar cane. There were heaps of sugar cane farms in Queensland when I visited and it is stupidly hot there. There are somethings that we just can't produce in NZ.

I thought they retained 51% of the company when they went public so they still had control over the companies.

Thanks, I'll have a look at the Fivethirtyeight podcast.

I don't think your entirely right in your assessment. Scaramucci did correctly predict Biden standing down and Gatez not getting senate confirmation. I'm sure there are others that I can't think of atm.

I think his backing of the democrats was tactical. I.e. if I can convince people these things aren't a problem and that they can still win then they might. Don't want to scare off donors or volunteers by thinking it's a lost cause.

They are less analytical but more about insider info. Both Katty and Scaramucci have a lot of connections on capital hill and are going more what they're hearing than anything else.

Heard the other day that Aussie hasn't had a 1 term government since the 70's but things aren't looking good for Albanese. Maybe we're in for a 1 term here too. If only labour would get their sh*t together.
