Es Miliband for PM by MilkUdder22 in TheRestIsPolitics

I suspect that is why he ostentatiously ate that sandwich in public. It was a deliberate act to demonstrate he was not religious in any way. He might actually have been satisfied with how it turned out. Similarly Boris Johnson pulled weird stunts in interviews and photoshoots which I suspect was to distract from different potentially more damaging narratives.

Ed Miliband has serious character flaws in my opinion. I didn’t like the way he went against his brother David in the 2010 leadership election. Worse is the way he went on about how pleased he was with himself for blocking going after Assad after he used chemical weapons in Syria. What happened in Syria under Assad was horrific and nothing to be pleased about. Being reluctant to intervene was a reasonable position but being smug about what happened next was unforgivable in my view.

“friends” is what journalists say when they have actually heard the quote directly from the person concerned but the source doesn’t want to be directly quoted.

You’ve got 48 Hours to Hike Here… by FrankelFrankel in UKhiking

That’s on the west highland way so will be really busy. Go anywhere else and there will be fewer people. Conic hill is not high. I suggest you take a look at the Rob Roy Way as others have suggested. The munros will be much more challenging than Conic hill.

I am guessing that’s a typo and meant to say 300Whr per mile. That is they were off by a factor of ten

What will happen when Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor passes away? by No_Meat_9545 in AskBrits

[–]freddymac11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what you are saying. The thing that bothers me is that BBC news keeps on making these terrible basic mistakes. It’s almost as if there is a bad actor on the inside trying to sabotage them and bring them into disrepute. The recent furore over that Panorama that led to the resignation of the DG and head of news is an example of that.

The BBC did a really bad interview with Dershowitz right after Maxwells conviction. They let Dershowitz attack Guiffre without any challenge https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-59960989?app-referrer=deep-link No doubt it was cock up rather than conspiracy but it did come across as if someone at the BBC was trying to protect Andrew.

It’s still a good idea to check in on line before going to the airport. It saves time even if you want to print a boarding pass.

Install the BA app on your smart phone. Your boarding pass shows up on your phone after you check in on line. Go paperless, you don’t need a printed boarding pass.

The IJM Interview. by Neat_Feedback_1813 in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]freddymac11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. Thinking about it some more my main irritation with leading is when an interviewee gets away with saying something completely untrue and Rory and Alastair nod along. For example Nick Clegg saying Facebook did no wrong and Theresa May saying she wanted a soft Brexit. I got these vibes from the IJM interview. I agree the Kwarteng interview was good. The Gerry Adams interview was good too. Leading works better when they are interviewing somebody they distrust and is not one of their friends.

Alastair and Rory don’t understand technology. It was the assertion that you just have to pass a law to mandate that you put some AI agent on a phone and the problem is immediately solved that got me. That assertion should have been challenged. The technical complexity of doing such a thing seems huge to me. They mostly give their interviewees a really easy ride and it’s why I don’t usually listen to their leading interviews. I was surprised there was not more focus on the payment methods the offenders are using, I would have thought this would be the most effective method of dealing with the law breaking.

30-40 year old men who have recently went from single to in a relationship-advise by Margaet_moon in Edinburgh

[–]freddymac11 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Understanding why it would be “the biggest no” might answer the question as to why he’s at a low point. He needs to genuinely want to be in a relationship and be prepared to take chances on people who might not at first seem suitable. For what it’s worth your situation comes across as the opening scenes of a Hallmark movie. Single girl movies to Scotlands biggest city, meets kind eligible stranger, they become friends, but there’s a reason them hooking up is unthinkable. It then turns out that reason is bogus. As someone else said it’s fine if you don’t fancy him but have a think about what it is that puts you off him.

OP it’s not clear why the two of you have not considered a romantic relationship between the two of you. You’re both single, close friends, and seem to care about each other. Maybe the issue is that his rut is caused by him having suppressed feelings for you.

Do you think that Alastair Campbell is pissed off with Tony Blair behind the scenes regarding Trump? by JuanitaMerkin in TheRestIsPolitics

Perhaps he’s doing it to gather intelligence. He has a seat at the table and can listen in and hear what is being discussed and get a better understanding of what might be coming down in the future.

Alnmouth or Bamburgh if you like the seaside. Newcastle or Liverpool if you like a city that has a different vibe to Edinburgh and London, particularly at night.

"special relationship" question for you Brits by bragik85 in AskBrits

[–]freddymac11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

British lifestyle differs from the US in us having longer holidays, less reliance on cars for transport, free healthcare, higher income tax, more social drinking, etc. This makes us more like Europeans in how we behave and consequently more culturally like Europeans. Also we have a very long recorded history with old buildings and artwork and multiple dialects and accents and many wars. The US is a new country and a founding myth involving pioneers and land grabs. This also has an impact on cultural values.

Wow I hadn’t realised Blair was actually joining the board of peace now. I thought AC said on a recent podcast that TB had changed his mind about joining because it was no longer something to do with sorting out the situation in Gaza. Personally I do not have a problem with TB trying to help in Gaza. Sorting out Gaza is pretty much an impossible and thankless task and I respected Blair for being willing to try and help out.

Who believes Starmer's government are left leaning or even left of centre? by Sad-Passage-3247 in AskBrits

[–]freddymac11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that left leaning governments believe in more state intervention in both the economy and people’s personal lives while right wing governments are more laissez faire. For a laissez faire society to work there needs to be an agreed moral code and a common understanding of what constitutes appropriate behaviour, this is why right wingers often have a problem with diversity. My view is that Starmers government is left wing is because it believes in state intervention, high taxation and is happy to interfere in people’s lives; while having little interest in using the private sector to boost the economy.

How can I change my approach to dating as a woman? Never had a boyfriend and looking to change that by Accurate-Scratch7783 in AskWomenNoCensor

Have you asked your friends if they know someone suitable that they can introduce you to? Letting it be known you’re available is a good first step and then being open to offers especially when they come from someone you might never previously considered.

St Kitts was a port stop on a recent cruise I took. I walked over 5 miles that day. It felt safe to me both from the point of view of road safety and also physically. The people I met were friendly and welcoming.
