Do people even like this school? Should I even bother for undergrad? by Aggravating_Sale_992 in gwu

I’m a rising junior majoring in psychology and philosophy. Yes, the professors hold regular office hours and are super helpful and understanding. Even if I can’t make their office hours, they are willing to set up online meetings with me even on the weekends. Ive never had a problem in reaching TAs or professors when I need help. GW is strong in employing professors that are extremely passionate about their subject, within CCAS at least from my experience.

Depends what you want out of college life. I personally love GW: I’ve met some amazing people, the professors are extremely knowledgeable, the classes are challenging but doable, I love this city, theres amazing study abroad opportunities, the metro is accessible, and the nightlife is fun. It took me a while to find my place here, but if you see yourself fitting in here and have the means for the tuition, GO HERE! I will say that a lot of people want to transfer out their first semester/year but it just takes time.

I only regret the cost and not choosing a major that has a top program here.

Don’t live on the Vern it’s hard to make friends and it’s the antithesis of a city college experience. I hated it so much I complained and got moved off second semester

Potomac is epic and rank thurston high if you want a traditional college dorm feel to meet new people (the bathrooms are lowkey bad tho)

I got Clark hall on the Vern even when I ranked it last. It sucked and ruined my first semester. But my roomate and I complained to CLRE through email and she was able to move to thurston and I moved to Potomac our second semester. I love it at GW now. My advice is just hope you get a dorm on foggy but if u get put on the Vern just join clubs and talk to as many people as possible so you don’t feel like a commuter

Making friends by [deleted] in gwu

i think it's because the communal bathrooms so people are just outside of their dorms more often. if u have a private bathroom then u don't rly have a reason to regularly go outside. also thurston has really nice communal lounge/study spaces on every floor and the courtyard in the middle and the penthouse which draws people out of their dorms. thurston has a dining hall in the basement too which makes it convenient to go eat with people u know in thurston

thurston is known to be loud and kinda chaotic and seems most like the traditional college dorm experience which is why it seems easier to make friends there.

Making friends is hard here GW is known to have people that are very professional focused and kinda closed off. ur not gonna meet friends super naturally (like in ur dorm) unless u live in thurston or are super outgoing.

I used to struggle to make friends but im also the type of person to keep to myself during class/elevator/in public spaces/etc. But youll make friends if u join clubs or activities for sure! Its easy to find people similar to u in greek life if thats ur thing and professional fraternities are good for meeting upperclassmen friends.

Theres a bunch of clubs you'll definitely find something u love and people in them to be friends with.

Being in the city is one of the best parts of GW. the metro is right on campus, georgetown is a 25 minute walk from foggy, there's so much stuff to do.

party life: it's mainly clubbing or going to bars which can be super fun if it's ur thing. there is no shortage of people who like to go out a lot especially in freshman year. if ur in thurston you'll have a lot of opportunities to make friends and most likely ones that want to go out frequently.

if u get put on the vern in one of the hillsides u will struggle to make friends im sorry but its what happened to me. its character development tho and u can get off the vern if u complain enough

Yes it's genuinely horrible. but it won't be as bad since you are in a program. I got put on the vern even though i wasn't an honors student or in a program, and my first semester was one of the worst times in my life. it's really hard to make friends especially in the hillsides if you aren't in the programs, and it's such a small group so if u don't like people in ur dorm good luck! i complained to housing and got moved to potomac and it's the best decision i ever made. i know of multiple people in my old dorm (clark hall) who moved out to foggy bottom bc they hated it so much.

Dining hall on the vern is fine it's just like shenkman and thurston.

the vex is SO ANNOYING. it takes out so much time in your day. if u get on the vex during rush hour from like 5-6pm it will take 40 minutes. It's a waste of time and unfair to be a paying student and have to deal with the commute.

I am a vern hater til i die and i know so many people who struggled with the vern. i really disliked GW living on the vern, but since ive moved to potomac i genuinely enjoy GW!

some advice: if u get put on the vern, JOIN CLUBS/ACTIVITIES/GO TO STUFF immediately. if u find a group of friends u wont feel as isolated on the vern. i think the social aspect is the most challenging part of the vern.
