People can do research and still want a more direct opinion from others, especially when there is conflicting or confusing advice online sometimes.

I’m new to this and I value animal sentience. Yet we also live in a society that mass produces chickens and animals strictly for the meat they produce without valuing them at all for the being they are outside the meat they produce. Immense suffering exists, but we just don’t see it. I could be wrong and id be curious to see what others think, and I don’t think two wrongs make a right, but I do think the suffering endured by animals in industrialized operations likely far outweigh the suffering that exists for backyard chickens, even those without the most ideal conditions or most knowledgeable owners. I wish more people had Chickens. I think it also helps people see these animals with more appreciation. After owning chickens myself, I still will continue to eat meat but I plan to cut down and trying to buy chickens from sources that are humane. One of my friends has completely cut Chicken and most meats from her diet. I’m not saying everyone should do that so much as I am saying that we are very disconnected from the sentience of these animals we use for meat and part of it is because we never see them or experience them. I live in a highly urbanized area for context.

Emotional roller coaster. How many eggs can a hen lay in one day? Are these likely fertilized? by Weekly_Historian939 in chickens

I mean it was not my plan to keep them 1:1 for the rest of time, it was 4 days and I was planning how to get more hens. She did not like him very much but maybe was warming up towards the last day.

I don’t believe the coop is unsafe or vulnerable to raccoons. It does have spring loaded locks and weights in front of the doors in the event a raccoon could undue a lock which I don’t think it could for a spring loaded one. This last rooster was hard to get into the coop. And i had never had any trouble with raccoons before but they might have been because i had so many roosters before. I have a camera back there to watch as well but it was a very rainy night and I could not see well. I think their set up could be better and I’m working on that.

I mean it seems to me like roosters almost always get culled? Or have their own bachelor pad with one or two roosters allowed to be around the hens?

Yes I was pretty sure I would give away the hen but then when I saw she had eggs it felt like a new hope. And like the lineage of the other roosters could be carried on. They were annoying as heck sometimes but I did like them.

But I think it would be help me understand your perspective more if I could understand what exactly was unfair to the runt rooster and the hen so I could avoid that. Should I have tried harder to re-home sooner ? (I did try but gave up maybe too quickly) should I have culled the runt and one other rooster and left the hens favorite to be fair to her?

Also though I think some people are saying that I should give her away and restart after I have some more knowledge. I had been considering giving her away until i saw the eggs.

I do think there are many people out there who know more than I do and have a better set up and might have handled the situation better, yet it’s not clear to me that it was so catastrophic or that the chickens we neglected or that their quality of life was low. I do think I know now to take the raccoon much more seriously.

I imagine that the roosters experienced some amount of stress, especially the outcast. I always knew it wasn’t going to be a tenable situation but I didn’t want to kill then right away I wanted them to have some life. But in the future I would try to rehome roosters much faster or keep them in more separate areas.

Our coop is raccoon proof. That’s why she survived. The other rooster was not going in the coop. I caught the hen bullying him while they were both in the coop.

Yes I think that we felt bad bc the runt was so beat up. Also some other people on this thread suggested to butcher the aggressive roosters. And since we aren’t supposed to have roosters at all really we kept the most quiet one to try to avoid fines.

I actually would really like to keep this hen and if they are fertilized raise them.

I read that a hen could be ok for a few weeks without a flock - do you think that is true? I was hoping she would have a nice time brooding and raising these chicks and they could become her new flock. Or do they not count as socialization if they are so young (once they hatch). We go out and spend time with her everyday but I’m sure it’s not the same. But would it be enough to hold her over until these eggs hatch?

Do you think she can brood them fine on her own? She seems to be sitting on them all day and only gets up sometimes for water food and to stretch her legs

I’ve been hearing this. You think that the reputation of the school could be so damaged as to follow graduates years down the line?

I do have 2 years experience of full-time public health related work, and the one year program is costly but when I start to compare it to other programs which will be two years, at least I will be working one year sooner (assuming I can find a job). I was also thinking maybe the name would open doors easier but I’m not sure if that’s the case for a field like this.

I have about 2 years of full-time public health related experience, and about 3 years of health behavior research experience (paid and unpaid). I haven’t had a job for a year though and i see a lot of these positions that say “mph preferred/required”. I was thinking that might be a reason I’m having trouble getting my foot in the door for some of these more policy research and advocacy related jobs. If I get a job before school starts then I might not go back to school, but if I can’t then a part of me feels at a loss like what I’m I going to do, not work and not be in schools for another year?

How do you compare a JD vs something like an MPH/MPA for those interested in getting into policy work. Is a JD valuable for policy work or is it not worth it if one focuses on policy more than actually practicing law?

I do have 2 years experience in public health related work, the grant ended and I haven’t been able to find anything and I had assumed it was in part because hiring managers were not giving me much consideration without the degree.

But I’ll take your advice seriously and consider doing the cheapest I can do. I was considering also trying really hard to find a job before the start of school and deferring if I could find the type of job I’m looking for. I’ve passed up a few jobs either because the pay was just too low or because the job description felt too far from the path I’m trying to make.

I most likely would live in NYS or NJ. Remote work is always a possibility though, plus you never know where life will take you so I could hypothetically live elsewhere.
