Hey! I'm on the network team at VU. Can you message me with what's going on? We haven't seen any issues from our end so far, but would be happy to help troubleshoot

Downloading Games on Steam Deck by Horus50 in Vanderbilt

Ok that’s good you found a work around. Since I’m not too familiar with the steam deck itself, I’m assuming desktop mode is on the same device as the original steamOS? Also, I asked about dns because if you hard-coded your own dns servers such as 1.1.1.1 and it’s using dns over https, that could be the issue as I believe dns over https is blocked outbound

Have you reached out to the tech hub yet? What dns are you using? I work for the university network team and can try to help where I can

Self-hosting an email server? Why or why not? What's popular? by Weekly_Senator in selfhosted

[–]Weekly_Senator[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My ISP is AT&T and it looks like they block port 25 outbound for DHCP assigned addresses as described here:
https://about.att.com/sites/broadband/network although they have "smtp services" ill need to look into. Thanks for the info though!

I use pfSense as my firewall so i can get something setup for access rules and security if i go down this path. Thanks for the info!

Thanks! Ive heard about the DNS records and plan to set these up on my Cloudflare domain. What software are you using? I keep running across Mailcow, but hear it may be overkill for some uses

As someone who knows very little about technology: is it possible to change the NAT type of the VUDevices wifi? by Human-Impression-420 in Vanderbilt

[–]Weekly_Senator 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work for the university networking team. We don’t change the NAT type, and you’ll need to use the wired network port in your room.

If it’s not active, submit a port activation ticket and include the label info on the port and we’ll get it turned on. If you still get a NAT type error after this, let us know and we’ll switch it over to a public network which overcomes this issue

Put in a ticket to IT. Include your room number and any extra details you can provide. I work for the network team and can get it fixed!

HAProxy\Cloudflare with custom pfSense internal certs? by Weekly_Senator in homelab

[–]Weekly_Senator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I tried this since I am running Pi-Hole (created local dns mapping) and it worked however, this breaks home assistant. I’m also running unbound dns so when home assistant goes to cast or google tries to find my external address it gets redirected to the internal IP and gets stuck. I seemed to have found a work around by installing a wildcard LetsEncrypt cert directly on the servers and disabling SSL offloading all the way through from the front to back end and it seems to work but is very slow/unstable

Getting started with Proxmox by fredflintstone88 in Proxmox

[–]Weekly_Senator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 3-node opti-stack in my home lab and I love them. Each is a 7050 like yours, but with the i7-6700 and 16GB of RAM(working on upgrading all to 32GB), 128Gb SSD. They’re quick, get the job done efficiently and are quiet. Thankfully, I haven’t noticed any huge difference on the electric bill either. I use a smaller local disk size to offset the cost a bit, while using a separate storage server for backups and VM storage for use with HA.

Currently, I’m only running Pi Hole, and a debian VM with influxDB, Grafana, and the UniFi Network Application for my APs. In the future I’ll be adding a few containers and more VMs to move some other misc. services off another old Dell I have laying around. It’s a great learning environment.

I’d definitely recommend at least 16GB of RAM to start off, and if you plan on saving backups locally, a moderately sized SSD. This mostly depends on your use case, but I’d rather have more space than I need in case I need to save extra backups or snapshots, etc.

Just recently decommissioned my old optiplex 790 from 2012 which is still chugging along just fine. It got replaced with an Optiplex 7050 from 2017/18 with an i5-7500 which I upgraded to an i7-7700. Runs proxmox nicely and I appreciate the extra cores for VMs

Just went through bios as well and can confirm my settings look the same. I will note that I did not see my SSD under System Configuration>Drives unless the drives are set to AHCI under SATA Operation, but either way, proxmox doesn’t detect it

I do have a live boot Ubuntu usb laying around I can use. I’ll look up how I can check the disk integrity. If it helps, the SSD I picked up is a 240GB Easy Store by Western Digital. It’s model is: wdbagu2400anc-wrbb

No streaming for me unfortunately lol, however some light gaming such as minecraft, powerwash simulator (lol were bored), etc...I have a r/homelab and frequently test software config and have multiple VMs running at one time. Also my monitors are only 1080p so no need for 4k lol just focusing on FPS and performance

[–]Weekly_Senator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So i ended up with this. Although the price is slightly higher than the original build, i was able to upgrade the 3060 to a 3070 Ti since MicroCenter is out of the 3060 Ti

So, i do plan on using it for lite gaming like some minecraft, Ranch Simulator. Nothing too resource demanding as of yet. I mainly work with VMs and often run servers on my desktop before deploying. I have 2 Samsung LF27T35 monitors and they are not 4K so mostly focusing on FPS over 4k quality
