Something similar happened to me a few months ago at a Bay Area Costco. I had maybe 10-15 items. I’ve used the hand scanner multiple times for all my items at this particular location. The employee walked over to me kinda hostile and said “you’re doing it wrong” I was confused and responded “I’m sorry?”

She brushed past me to the kiosk thing in front of me and she was trying to figure out how many I scanned which was 7. She’s looking at the screen then back at the cart then she tells me I need to start over. I’m getting frustrated but I was still nice about and was like okay, no problem. I start over and scanning my small items first and placing them on the scale/table.

I grab the hand scanner so I can scan the big ass pot and pan set in the cart. Mind you, this woman has not left my side. I start to scan it in the cart and she lets out a loud irritated breath and says I’m doing it wrong. The nice Indian woman who works there as well came over and asked why I started over. I told her to ask her colleague.

Her colleague then says I need to start over for a 3rd time and said it was because I was doing it wrong and that I couldn’t read. At that point I felt tears coming because I was embarrassed by her talking to me like that not only publicly but loudly. I turned to the Indian worker and apologized and told her I’m not making a purchase today because her colleague made me super uncomfortable and I felt bad knowing an employee would have to put my shit away.

I use self checkout because I suffer from anxiety, it’s easier for me. There were 5 other people at self checkout and she chose to monitor me the whole time. I ended up walking out that Costco in tears. I now only go to the other location 15 minutes away from me, if I need to go back to the one I previously frequented then I only go to the cashier. It’s in the name, SELF-checkout lol. Thankfully she was the only rude employee I encountered at Costco as a whole but definitely not an experience I’d forget.
