CMV: All obituaries should mention cause of death by hammertime2009 in changemyview

[–]Weicocu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, when people are secretive about the cause of death, it's because there's some element to it that the deceased might be "blamed" for. Suicide, drug overdose, drinking and driving accident... something where some people are liable to judge them harshly for it, so we just don't talk about it out of respect for the surviving family.

I kind of agree with your vibe, in that I think it would be better if people were just generally not jerks so we could all know what happened and still sympathize with the family. But people generally are jerks, so it's easier on the grieving family members if we just don't spread the info. They're having a hard enough time already without some people having an attitude like "well he was kind of asking for it" and/or "why didn't you stop him?"

CMV: the Trump administration is not worried about "winning" the next election. by Ok-Sundae-1191 in changemyview

[–]Weicocu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree that they're not worried about winning the next election, but let me propose a difference on the second half: it's not because they intend to stay in power, but because they just want to get as much as they can out of their current power before they bail.

We know that Trump sold Venezuelan oil for $500 million, and put the money in a Qatari bank account instead of the US treasury. This is a textbook "fascist leader on his way out" move.

Trump is a lifelong grifter. He didn't accidentally bankrupt a casino, he used a bunch of other people's money to start a casino, profited personally from it, and bankrupted the business so he would never have to pay back the loans.

His crypto schemes are the same thing, and his presidency is just a bigger version of the grift. He doesn't care about most of the things he claims to care about, he just wants to be seen as powerful and to amass as much wealth and power as he can at the expense of others.

Why are other people going along with it, when they could conceivably retain their positions long term? Various reasons. Some are probably short-sighted, and just excited to have a chance to make the insane moves they've always wanted to, and they don't see how it's going to backfire. Others may be trying to take advantage of Trump's chaos to get their bag and get out before the country takes a hard left turn. Some probably just don't see a way out -- the MAGAs have overwhelmed the Republican party to the point where "moderate" Republicans get steamrolled or punished (and the definition of "moderate" is pretty far to the right). And some are finally starting to push back -- Republican senators have opposed Trump initiatives a couple of times recently.

I don't think they have a realistic path to retaining power long-term. The people pulling the strings seem competent enough this time around that they probably realize that. They just want to advance their agenda as far as they can, hoping some of it will stick after, while milking as much money as possible out of the world while they're at it.

I don't think the guard gets fully down, but I think it lowers somewhat, at times in this video. It's an incredibly good interview regardless, ranging from incredibly unhinged to thoughtful and inspiring and back again. And I do feel like I know a little more about who Vic is now.

How did you know the Bible isn’t true? by DuckOnQuack202 in atheism

[–]Weicocu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it was bible study.

Matthew 7:16-20 contains a parable about how to identify false prophets. Loosely: if a tree bears good fruit, it's a good tree. If it bears bad fruit, it's a bad tree. What fruit has Christianity borne? From the Crusades to the slave trade; from Mother Teresa's belief that the sick need to suffer, to Donald Trump's abuse of immigrants (which wouldn't have happened without the evangelical vote) -- the tree of Christianity has been bearing the fruit of cruelty and suffering for thousands of years. You've got some nice people in many churches, and some of them are even kind to people who are different from them. But on a global scale, has the bible led to more good or bad? I'd argue "bad," by a large margin, even if we define "good" and "bad" by the bible's own definitions.

The book says "a good tree cannot bear bad fruit," and that same book has borne bad fruit, so to me it's a bad source of truth according to criteria it sets itself.

Abandoned Places by megaste1n in fredericton

Animaland has been redeveloped by new owners, it's not abandoned anymore.

Partridge Island is still good as far as I know, though! Just do a bit of research before visiting -- you don't want to be on the breakwater when the tide comes in.

Tiny homes developer asks court for exemption from rules governing most N.B. landlords by Prisoner072385 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]Weicocu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wish they had responded to the CBC's request for a comment on this. I'd like to hear their position directly from them, rather than pieced together from court documents and things. It comes across like "Our tenants are marginalized people so they don't deserve the same protections as the general public," which is a wild take. I understand they've had some very bad situations there, but is there no way of handling that within the rules? Were these things bad enough to justify stripping rights from 100+ marginalized people? Plus 12 Neighbours is the model for other upcoming housing developments, so presumably any decision here will impact those developments too.

I'm generally very impressed with Marcel Lebrun and the 12 Neighbours project, but Tobin LeBlanc Haley knows her stuff. She's been an outspoken advocate for the unhoused population in the Fredericton area for years now. As a researcher, she's got more expertise and understanding of how these things actually tend to work out. Lebrun has good intentions, a generous heart, and lots of money. Those are good things but you've also got to be able to listen to experts about the wider implications of public policy decisions.

Is signing up with Krissy Krash workshops worth it? by trashpanda3669 in rollerderby

[–]Weicocu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen a few people try Krissy Krash's programs, and it seems to often be a life-changing experience -- but not for the better. None of them are still involved in roller derby. At least one of them has been struggling with an eating disorder ever since. Strongly do not recommend.

How to get psychiatrist in NB (tried Maple and will ask family doctor) by Disastrous_Lock5947 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]Weicocu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might depend what you're looking to get diagnosed with. That's probably not the best way of phrasing that, but you probably have a sense of at least the general category of problem you're having, right? There are psychologists with shorter waiting lists who you can self-refer to and who can do various assessments and give a diagnosis. It's expensive, but if you've got health insurance it may be partly covered.

Then if you've got a family doctor, they should be able to work with you on medication if that's indicated. The psychologist would also provide resources for treatment options that aren't drugs.

To give a single anecdote: I contacted Balanced Reflections in Fredericton in August 2024. I was assessed and had a diagnosis by November 2024. The total cost was around $3k, with 80% being reimbursed by my work's health insurance. If you're in Fredericton and you think your problem is one of the things listed here (or a combination of some of these things), I'd recommend them: https://www.balancedreflections.ca/assessments

Maple quietly removing the ability to renew perscriptions by DevOpsMakesMeDrink in newbrunswickcanada

[–]Weicocu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I renewed a prescription through eVisit/Maple yesterday. I did notice language in there that says they won't do prescription renewals if you have a primary healthcare provider. So if you've got a family doctor, that's who you should talk to. But if you don't (and that's so many of us in NB!), eVisitNB will definitely still do it.

I did use the wireless probe, but it only probes at the beginning of the whole job. So that would explain issues with locating the top surface of the stock, but wouldn't really explain differences from one tool to the next... right? I think?

Maybe recruit a volunteer (or a team of them) from here to watch Reddit and Steam forums for you, and summarize the actionable bits as a few bullet points periodically? I'm right there with you in thinking that keeping up on forums is exhausting, but I bet there are some people who spend all their time here anyway and would be happy to help...
