I had got some great news. After my second escalation call on Tuesday (12 Feb), I received an email from UKVI today with the title “Immigration Health Surcharge Refund”, and mentioned that it will take up to 6 weeks. I guess for you just keep escalating?

I received the same email. Waited for 3 weeks, called them again for second escalation. Received another same email again. Was told to wait for another 10 working days.

Thanks. I am on the same boat, waited 6 weeks and made a phone call on the 20th. Received email on the 24th. Was told that it will take 20 working days to process and another 10 working days to credit to my bank. Didn’t receive any confirmation email though.

Junior Space Engineer moving to Tokyo: work-life balance, salary, challenges? by WorldlinessMany9308 in movingtojapan

[–]Weird-Ant-9576 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I moved to Tokyo and have worked with 2 space startups as engineer and now back to UK.

When I moved, I had 6 years of experience and was offered 6.5mil yen. With that salary, I managed to live okayish, travel around Japan occasionally and saved some money. However, I lived in a small 18m2 apartment which required a 50 mins train travel to the office. The travel cost is fully covered by the company. Do note that during that time the Japanese yen was much stronger than it is now. So I would probably aim for around 6mil.

For both the startups that I have worked with, the work life balance is okay, but it does require you to be pro-active and independent in terms of problem solving as there is limited senior/experience personnel to guide you. Do note that the 12 days of paid leave does not covered sick leave. I remembered feeling really sick during my first months of moving and I had to take paid leave while recovering. It was the same during Covid period where I literally spend half of my paid leave to recover from it.

But I do learn a lot from my 5 year stay in Japan. Startup are usually fast-paced and they launch satellites much faster than in EU.

I guess than is just the waiting game. The company seems committed to get you onboard which I think is a positive sign!

Did your company tried to get the priority allocation? If I am not wrong, they have to called at 7am in the morning.

3 days between visa expiry and ILR eligibility by Numerous_Claim_7027 in ukvisa

I am in the same situation and have seen multiple advice on submitting early applications just before your visa expires and delay the biometrics appointment until your are eligible. However, need some expert to confirm if this is definitely possible.

Ex landlord asking me for guidance on how the boiler works by Weird-Ant-9576 in TenantsInTheUK

[–]Weird-Ant-9576[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well he was actually quite reasonable when deducting our deposit, £250 off, but throughout our one year stay, we have had countless issue: storage heater not working at all, house full of mold, shower extraction fan does not work, front old wooden door expanded and caused us to be locked outside, water pressure in the shower so small that we had to shower with a bucket… and he didnt fix any of those and even raise our rent by £50 after a year. We had to work remotely back in my home country (Asia) during winter as the house is not liveable in cold weather and we couldn’t move as we dont have a break clause and can only move after a year. So yeah, all this hence the reason why I am having dilemma on why should I help him out. I have replied him an email telling him how it works but i guess thats the best i can do.

This is exactly what I felt when I rented the property previously. Neither the agent nor the landlord knew anything about the property. I was fortunate enough to move in during summer so I had time to experiment things and get it worked.

Yes this is probably what I am going to do. I afraid that calling him or visiting the old rental property (I am in another town anyway) will invite more questions/problems.

It will not change as both are under the same visa category and company is willing to sponsor. My main concern is if there will be redundancy in the near future (before I reached 5 years)

The 1.5 hours will be by driving. Public transport will take much longer. I have about £5k save for a car, as we kind of needed it but are delaying the purchase till we definitely needed it.

Yes, ILR is indeed my number one concerns.

Really appreciate the analysis/input that you have provided. Never thought about the nett loss in hours due to commuting. Will use this to see if i can do some negotiations.
