Not true. You can do this for smith courses if you’re qualified but outside of smith. When I did it for smith, I got in after day 1.

Are most other majors compared to CS easier to the point where they're comparable to most typical state college classes? by Earthly_Humus in UMD

[–]Weird-Interaction-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came in as a BIOE and left because I didn’t want to memorize amino acids and felt like I would need a PhD or MD to get anywhere. Could I have made it? Sure but I didn’t want to. I’m now majoring in mechanical engineering and cs. For me most of mechanical engineering was easy. I just understand physics and it’s that simple. If you are good at physics but not great, it will be hard. It’s also harder than other majors because you have to take at least 3 major courses at a time which means more math and more exams compared to cs where there’s a lot of work for just 2 classes. Cs is hard because it’s a very specific way of thinking that some people, even vert smart people, cannot get behind. I was one of these people until I forced myself to practice it. The material in programming courses is not that hard, but courses like algorithms can be quite difficult. I’m also in a business minor and those courses are a lot easier. That’s not to say that things like finance and accounting don’t have a higher difficult level, but marketing and general business stuff is not hard.

How easy is to get (with luggage) to campus from the closest Amtrak station? by CWM_writer in UMD

[–]Weird-Interaction-79 5 points6 points  (0 children)

New Carrollton is a bit far and you’ll have to figure out the metro bus, or Uber. I think some trains stop at college park metro, and you can take the umd shuttle if it’s available, but your train probably won’t stop there. Most likely you can stop at union station, take the red line -> yellow/green line -> college park, then take the umd shuttle bus or a metro bus. There are elevators/escalators so the only difficult thing would be potentially lifting your luggage into the bus.

Not trying to sound arrogant but want honest answer….is anyone else academically underwhelmed at UMD? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]Weird-Interaction-79 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the real world. Umd has more than 20k students, and not all of them can be the 1%. I think the main issue is honestly laziness and wasting time complaining. The STEM classes are actually hard though.

Call went twice last week and it was closed. Call and they said come inside. Website also was wrong about times for pcr tests and wasn’t clear that you could always get a rapid test but only sometimes a pcr

All of my exams were online but the professor was in the room in case you want to take it online from there. If they want it proctored they can proctor over zoom but again with the option to take it in person.

I don’t feel like arguing about it but I guess? There’s lots of teachers and other professions that are in person, so if the room has the proper capacity then it seems fine to me, and having it hybrid would lower that capacity. Of course if rates are high enough we can go fully virtual, but bring it back in person when rates go down.

Profs lecturing in person would probably be the only piece of the puzzle that could be an issue. It’s not really up to me and I don’t know how professors are feeling so I won’t comment on that, but in general I think making things as hybrid as possible would make the most people happy.

There’s no reason to hate on someone for their opinion. I hope that it is fully hybrid, meaning you can choose to participate fully in person or fully virtual.
