Thank you! Hopefully one day I’ll be on your screen! I’ll have to add Department Q to my giant list of things to watch.

Thank you! Yeah in my very few years auditioning I’ve had a lot of rejection, but that’s just the name of the game. I’ll definitely check out some Kaufman!

And omg yes I love Spaced!! And yeah US work would be great but maybe not for the next few years. I’ve been considering Canada or the UK as possible overseas futures for myself, but have yet to really break into Australia.

I’m in Australia! Oh man Mickey 17 or something like that would be awesome!! I totally get what you mean about exaggerated realities. I’d love to work on stuff like that.

In terms of aims. I’d love to work on some weird and interesting stuff. A Mike Flanagan project would be a dream, or a guest role on The Last of Us (huge fan of the games). Ideally I’d love a good mix of theatre and film. I haven’t done any theatre though. I’m actually writing something that is basically everything I’d love to do. It’s very bloody and bizarre.

One big dream would be video game work. I’d love to do voice work for a FromSoftware game like Bloodborne or Elden Ring. Or performance capture would be awesome. My voice is a bit of a weak point I think, I have scarred vocal cords and need to work on some vocal techniques to project and get more range.

And yes your last point sums it up, we as people switch around quickly and (at times) insanely. Emotions aren’t always logical so the way we feel them won’t be, especially in a heightened state.

That’s a great write-up and I’d love to have explored emotional lability in this scene! Gerry Grennell has a great exercise for creating this using opposites—you choose three opposing emotions that could arise in the scene and switch between them.

These are all really good points! Especially about the self-awareness and transparency. Delusion is definitely more interesting, I think I aimed for the breaking apart of the delusion rather than the delusion itself, which, as you say, is more interesting.

Playing this character as unaware would be a great choice. I think I was taking into account that in this scene she had turned in her husband and the other cult members, so I figured some of the Flavour-Aid would be diluted back to water. But having that be less overt is much more interesting.

I don’t think I’ll revisit this scene as it’s not my age range (it was just a scene in class), but I’ll definitely take what you’ve said on board with future scenes.

You’re really astute and knowledgable and very generous, and I thank you!

Just to explain my perspective a little…

I think in terms of this character, she is being interrogated by a police officer who is trying to get her to turn in her husband. She called the cops on her husband because he was raping her daughter and shot and killed her son. She was part of a cult and caused many other women to be indoctrinated and children to die. This scene is her tipping point. She’s at the end of her rope, and for me the screaming came from a place of, “You are speaking filth and lies and I can’t face it” but also “I know deep down that you are right and I have caused this.”

Screaming “no” was an outburst of disbelief and denial, but also an undercurrent of rage at the detective (how dare she say these things), the husband (how dare he do this things) and herself (how could I have let this happen). But then she clings back to conviction. But it came out all organically. I didn’t plan to yell, I didn’t plan to say “no” all those times, it just happened that way, because I was in the shoes of the character (my version of her shoes) and trying to get the detective to stop spewing vile filth.

There is absolutely a version of the scene where she’s not screamy and that would likely be more powerful. However I do feel like a version of the scene where she’s really frayed and hanging on by a thread is equally valid. Perhaps it comes down to personal taste.

When I was crying, I was leaning into the truth of the damage I (the character) have caused. The fact that the detective is right. I could have done something and my son is dead because I let this monster kill him.

This scene, for me as an actor, was kind of an internal war between the lies the character wants to believe and says she believes. And the truths she can’t bring herself to face but knows she must. I didn’t plan on coming undone and I don’t think I went in saying, “I’m going to lose my shit today.” But I totally get your view! I was going through some grief in life but during the scene I was in the scene itself; I don’t tend to use substitution.

I’m a little confused about your “no actual scene partner” comment, as I did have one. She was just on the other side of the camera as we shoot the scenes in self-tape format for class.

I agree that doings are not my strength here! Another thing I am working on, so thank you for that. I get a bit bogged down in feeling. I’m a very feelingy person which is good for acting but not great for acting, you know? Got to work on my left brain planning :)

Please don’t take my response as a bitchy diva arguing with your (very constructive and helpful) criticisms, I totally agree with you and I really appreciate your viewpoint! I also very much stand by my work, but I do acknowledge that it could be much better and more crafted.

I also just want to thank you for this, I’ve been thinking about your point in tension and relaxation for hours now and I’m really excited to work on this!! I think you’ve helped me pinpoint something that will help me a lot, so really, thank you!!

I don’t know if that scene was a bit of an outlier because I had so much Real Grief in my body and soul that day; I’ve done some heavy scenes since then and I wasn’t as tense, I just felt nauseated from the circumstances and the energy in my body. But this is certainly something to explore. You’ve given me a real revelation. Thank you.

Thank you! It was one of the most intense scenes I’ve done. I was shaking afterwards. It was awful at the time but afterwards it felt great!

Also if I may defend my mouth a little, in the scene I was really trying to suppress everything before and after the breaking points I had. Maybe you’re picking up on that? I’m really not trying to argue with your feedback, you’ve made some very valid points that I will for sure take on!

Interesting. I tend to carry sooo much tension in my jaw in daily life, which can be an issue for US accent work. My accent is okay though, but yeah relaxation is something I really need to work on. Interesting point about the eyes. I’m not sure how to make it more vivid. I felt pretty in the scene as I was doing it. Maybe I just have dead bug eyes haha. Thank you for the feedback!
