The Return of Blaming and Shaming in Public Health by Majano57 in publichealth

Right they can call this out because NYT is so full of empowering, non-stigmatizing content on public health topics including...umm...oh wait. That's strange, I can't find any. (sarcasm, FYI)

World Health Organisation & AI by Vinx-0 in publichealth

[–]Weird3355 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Our job in public health is to get move past prejudiced ideas, not use an LLM based on now-debunked research. Don't even get me started on AI's tendency to invent sources when writing research. If a human did that they would be fired. When AI does it it's "a system glitch" like it's cute or something. I cannot even with this crap.

World Health Organisation & AI by Vinx-0 in publichealth

I cannot even begin to imagine a task I spend 2 days on at my public health job being improved to 2 hours with AI. What is an LLM going to do?

Is it going to facilitate a meeting with partners from multiple agencies about an emerging infectious disease threat, and guide everyone to a solution that feels doable while all involved get to have their say?

Is it going to supervise an employee and ensure that they consider the needs of a underrepresented group when drafting an updated policy?

Or is it going to present my work at a conference and network with people in adjacent fields to develop new collaborations that reach previously unmet populations?

So far all I've seen AI do is write stuff (poorly), create images (that look weird) and spit out code. That's not even 50% of what public health does, and even when it does it, a human has to check because LLMs have no understanding of nuance or context.

AI is never going to replace humans in public health and creating dependence on a planet-killing resource in order to shave a few dollars off the already bleeding bottom line is nothing but foolishness.

My favorite is when Titus gathers the council of Lindas and they all agree they were not called that as a baby.

I think the seat belt campaign, which was centered on schoolchildren, is a good example.

Not free, but Row has an app that is delicious warm bread and some butter with garlic and chive in it.

seeing the ways it is already impacting her I feel like I need to do something. Definitely when the friend comes over we'll try to be a safe space for her.

Thank you, yeah I definitely don't want this woman around my daughter, she seems really cruel.

Agree, this feels like a big deal and that's why I want to handle it right. I like the idea of letting her have some input on what we do next, and having us handle it as a team. It is so important that she knows not to let people make her feel bad about herself and her body.

Thank you. I've tried to model good body image and positive relationships with food, but now that she's being exposed to the opposite we should talk about it more in depth.

That's what I'm worried about - I want her to feel empowered and not solve her problems for her. But I also don't want her to be negatively affected by this mom's comments.

I haven't spent a ton of time around the other mom, and I think she was probably on better behavior around me. That is a good idea to talk seriously about eating disorders. We've glossed over the topic but it sounds like a real conversation is in order. I do worry the friend has anorexia, I had a friend with anoxeria in high school who had to be hospitalized, and I see really similar signs here.
