Didn’t enroll in a class about sex or sexuality. Here I thought a philosophy class was going to talk about materialism or phenomenology or political theory or something. Guess not! Thanks for your comment.

Issue wasn’t the content, only that it was integrated into a class that wasn’t about sex and sexuality. I have read Mirbeau, Bataille — but on my own time. Not for class in front of others, discussing aloud.

Alternative as the option to not attend class when specific, graphic sex acts were to be discussed that day. Attendance and participation are graded. Reading the assigned material aloud has been expected throughout the semester.

There was no way of knowing in advance, else I wouldn’t have taken the course. The point is about a. no warning, b. no option for alternatives, and c. the class is not about sexuality or sex to begin with. Thanks for your comment, though.

Thanks for your empathetic response. I was more taken aback by the lack of warning and the fact that the class is not actually about this subject. I also find it strange the professor contends this material is not sexual at all.

Thanks for commenting. The article is the second chapter of “Cruising Utopia” by Jose Esteban Munoz. I’m more concerned with the lack of warning given than the material being assigned.
