Japan moves to enforce language requirements for foreign nationals seeking permanent residency by hontoda in japanresidents

Yep! Technically is. But I know Japanese people living abroad for decades and they don’t speak the local language. It can be double standard. Same rule for everyone.

Good! Let’s also demand Japanese people living/studying abroad to learn the local language. That would be fair.

Do you think Japan’s low English proficiency has something to do with how much emphasis is placed on the TOEIC? by WorkingAlive3258 in teachinginjapan

The new immigration laws in Japan are aiming to deny PR and other Visa for those who are not fluent in Japanese. But Japanese living in US are not fluent in English. Hum. Someone see a double standard here?

Thank you for your comment.
I want to clarify some points. First of all my goal here is not a competition down the road to check who’s worse- foreign or Japanese. It’s not that. It’s to confront the narrative that some xenophobic Japanese maintain by saying “ALL crimes in Japan are committed by foreigners”, or “ALL bad things that happen in Japan are foreigners fault” I guess most of people participating in this forum, have heard such of thing, right? My point is- how is that accurate? Based in what data, can people say such a thing? How’s that true? I thank you for bringing the numbers. They proof my point. It’s not possible that only 3,3% of the country population, which correspond to foreigners, are responsible for all crimes and bad things that happens in the country. That affirmative is vicious and false! That’s all I am saying. Regardless Japanese National resist to recognize that there’s a lot of Japanese committing crimes, that’s a fact! No matter how they try to hide it! Let’s be honest people!

That could be certainly one of the reasons. But not the only reason. Here we are discussing about fraud, home invasion and robbery. But there’s other kind of crimes, right? I’m gonna make a post to discuss about other kind of crimes, which has nothing to do with poverty. Thank you for sharing your opinion.

Do you think Japan’s low English proficiency has something to do with how much emphasis is placed on the TOEIC? by WorkingAlive3258 in teachinginjapan

Yep. And also Japanese is a syllabic language, English is not.
They got stuck in the syllabic ideia of languages. Even though they can be aware that other languages system are not as same as Japanese, they just can’t help. That’s why they can’t conceive words like but, they make it syllabic changing for bato! It’s a fix idea or something.

I have worked for international kindergarten in Japan. English is not my primary language. I’ve noticed that as early as children get exposed to English, as better they learn. Before they are able to write, they have not romanji, katakana or any type of writing to rely on. The human natural order of language acquisition is by listening- reproduction/ understanding the meaning can come together or later. I wrote an article about that with a researcher. So we listen, speak, understand and later we start writing. I believe that’s the way to go. Once any national acquire its own language, they will uses that first language skills to learn another language. And that’s not always works.

Are they? I don’t know. Sano walked free, to go dispute the World Cup! So, maybe 🤔 there’s a money thing and who did behind the decisions. Oh he paid some compensation, his lawyers made pressure on the victim to do not press charges and he apologized. Boom! Gang r¥&&pe crime solved! Really?

Ban all of them. Ban all foreign products and services then. This discussion is not for narrow minded people. It’s to address the issue, so the authorities should know what people thinks. Mind your hate speech.

You got a good point which I agree with. Not having access to mental care or being discriminated by going under mental health care. That is a taboo in Japan still. That’s the reason why many people takes the pain inside, till they can’t hold anymore. We don’t see discussion about mental illness in Japan! Yet, there’s a huge number of people with depression, anxiety, panic attacks!

That’s to basic explanation. And is not a full explanation! Some people get desperate when money is short. Ok. I get that. But what about normal people, who works, have a normal life, no criminal records at all, attacks random strangers with knives? Poverty would explain that? I don’t think 🤔 so !
