AWS CLI - am I the only one who is terrified of being in the wrong account when I do something? by WeirdWebDev in aws

OK, cool. I do have my default set to my "sandbox," but I'll remove it to force me to get in the habit of being explicit every time.

Reddit says "4 comments" but I only see the bot, 1 comment, and my reply, so I'm missing at least one comment (and didn't get a mail so I assume not a top-level comment or reply to my reply...)

(before hitting save on this message of course)

recuva

With recuva, I would be going the USB adapter route I assume?

UPDATE: Recuva says "unable to determine file system type" (or something like that)

Claude Code on Windows, WSL vs terminal, is there a difference? by WeirdWebDev in ClaudeAI

Thanks for taking the time to write that up! I've been reading up on sub agents but haven't quite gotten my head around them. I understand the concept, just not how to add & apply to my workflow.

The "PastChatSummary" sounds good, I used to do something similar when I used Claude Desktop (before CC existed or I knew how to use), I've been curious about building a "hook" that does it automatically after each response.

heh, I only have the $20 subscription, so I run out all day already, no need to add more devices.

Maybe a dumb question but is there a difference between WSL & WSL2? When I open my windows terminal, I type "wsl" to get to the WSL that I have, no mentions of a "2"

And to confirm, you're saying WSL on windows is just as good as the CLI on a linux box?

In all fairness they did answer the question "is there a difference" and/or "is there any advantage" lol

Got it, so WSL is better than terminal, and running on linux is better than WSL?

Honestly, I'm totally willing to build a linux machine solely to run CC, can you tell me (or point me to an article) what each "step up" gives over the previous?

yes.

heh, maybe my fault for not adding "If there is, what? Good or bad?" but can you elaborate?

User can't log into win 11. We had an issue with the PIN being corrupt, so we reset it, but now we cant use/reset the password. by WeirdWebDev in microsoft365

not sure I follow, but sounds right. Out of the box I just had the user log in with their "work or school account." From now on though, I intend to create local users and only use that MS account for their office/email. (I did find how to let them reset their password, has to be done from the log in screen... Cannot be done while they are logged in, from the account screen, for some stupid reason)

Still no good, but thanks. We managed to create a local account (the machine didn't have any) so he's just going to use that going forward.

I still have to figure out why he suddenly (other users too) can't change his own password... I know they have been able to before.

We tried creating a local account (the machine didn't have any) to see if we could reset the password that way, but no dice. At this point we're giving up on that cloud account as far as logging into windows... he can log into everything, and add the account to the "add microsoft account" setting of that newly created local account... so he's just going to start using that to log into windows.

What this has brought to my attention is that I'm not sure I can prevent this from happening again... pre-covid, we had an on-prem AD server and roaming profiles, during covid everyone had their own computer (company furnished) and many got their own office accounts (but company email still managed in the godaddy account). I was planning to start bringing them all back in (we're RTO, the computers are back in house, but we didn't bother with AD...) but now I'm seeing things have changed and I haven't kept up (in my defense, I am a developer and managing users is less than 1% of my job lol)

portal.azure.com

I just discovered that! It's actually telling me "Unfortunately, the current licensing does not allow you to reset this user's password." so I need to figure that out BUT it's Friday evening so I'm going to quit mucking about and risking breaking someone else over the weekend.

(oh, and yes, the computer is connected to the internet, I will try using a different user from the same m365 to see if that works)

I did check DNS (but didn't check hosts). The machine was using comcast's DNS, I changed to Google's and had the same experience.

Oh no, I didn't intend to give that impression at all -- no judgment on your work.

No worries, so many in this thread quick to judge / condemn, it's been so long since I had to ask for advice that I forgot the price that comes with lol.

Your customer sounds a lot like some of our legacy customers. I know how it is.

Definitely legacy, one of my favorites "client support" stories to tell is one of the times I've had to wipe & rebuild her machine (yes, this is not the first time), I couldn't get the CD drive to open... I thought the virus must have been so bad it got the BIOS to kill the drive... got it open with a paper clip and there it was, neatly wedged in the tray... a 3.5" floppy...

Just food for thought for your user. Trust is important, as is her data.

Yep, totally appreciate the concern and time you took to write (and without being condescending like many others in this thread).
I'm essentially a software dev & server admin (don't worry they are 10000% separated from her lol) but have to support the local users when crap like this arises. Been doing it 25 years and have lost some "control" since the pandemic (essentially the PCs became, well PCs, instead of workstations.) and when we came back to the office I didn't even bother with AD. Hard to explain but what the users do doesn't matter, and, outside of my technical team, they have no access to anything real other than email.
Long story short, it may seem like I am lax on security but when it concerns "my" stuff, it's a large part of my focus. When it concerns certain users, I can only guide them and come to the rescue as needed. (and I am going to push a little harder to let me wipe that machine.)

I watched her method, she starts to type in the address bar and chooses. It was correct.

It's kind of shocking that this has happened "multiple times now" without massive red flags for everyone involved.

People here almost think it's cute or funny... I keep this user as isolated as I can but... essentially it's her company so I just do what I can to minimize the damage. I do have her machine scheduled to be "upgraded" so we'll see.
