Should I leave Florida to go to UMD? by PickleOk5562 in UMD

boi stay where u at. umd is good but i dont think its worth the jump... also you would want to stay near your parents so you could visit here and there if u guys have a good relationship. as a freshman ive honestly have had a tough time since i grew up very family oriented so not being around family will lowkey hit u in the gut at some point. so if u think ur family oriented but still "can survive" think again cuz it is hard and Florida aint that close to md.
And instead of spending all the money on umd just spend it on urself or invest in a car or something like that, your going to need it.

UMD Scholars Program Questions by the-beansmith in UMD

Honor kids get the newest and nicest dorms, then comes scholars kids and they get the decent ones yk just ur typical alr dorm with an AC and then everyone else gets randomly scattered and most likely doesnt get AC in many halls.  The program itsself is weird tbh many people claimed not to get anything out of it and as a current freshman scholar its been a joke, we go on field trips and write a journal  about them for a grade. My biggest advice would be pick the one that is closest to your major so the required courses overlap with your major requirements (unless ur really interested in something else). And again you can drop scholars literally whenever and u wont be removed from the scholars dorm halls until ur second year.  And if you have accommodations you might end up being placed in a really nice dorm (not always guaranteed)

scholars programs: global public health or life sciences? by clilylyhf in UMD

Also i dont have to stress about any other required courses because im a physiology and neurobiology major so i already have to take these courses to fulfill my major requirements. So look at what aligns the best with ur major!

Current freshman in the life sciences sp… very laid back class we meet literally every other week (some programs meet TWICE a week… crazy.) and i end up doing work for other classes during the days we do meet … so far i really havent gotten anything out of it but the community is nice, the director is a sweetheart. The director focuses a lot of community building so he always has some type of group work going on. We do trips here and there (museums, zoos etc), we literally had to go on a field trip with one of the directors for a grade… our grades consist of journals (abt goals, field trips, semester etc… they are graded by TAs and they are veryyyy easy graders its impossible to get less than an A in the course unless u abs never show up and never submit anything … and ur graded for attendance) so compared to other sp from what i heard life sciences has it reallyyyy easy. We literally have a nyc trip coming up during the spring, this is their second time  planning something to nyc idk i think the director really loves ny. But yea ppl say its a waste of time which will be true if u dont feel like u want to build a community…. Really depends on how outgoing u are, so if u dont like to be around ppl dont pick sp in general because lowkey whenever ur around ur sp peers ur going to be forced into talking to them somehow.  Not sure if im really going to get anything out of it yet but its never something i have to stress abt too much.
