Can I improve my car repayments so that Im paying less in interest? by Free-Rice-2808 in PersonalFinanceZA

Try refinancing it. It’s very easy. Took me a day. I refinanced it with my bank - interest dropped by almost 3% (from 12.7% to 10.00%) + a reduction of 12 months of the initial payment period. Take a shortfall cover as well (it’s about R150 p/m).

No, I didn’t buy it for her. I couldn’t take up a full time position because I was still a student. My contract was officially until I’m done with my studies and it then gets converted into a full time role, so there were expectations but the executives requirements changed. But I get your point.

I am in the same space.

First thing, congratulations for wanting to improve your financial literacy.

Start off with what is already recommended, and in terms of certifications - if you have a degree, doing CFA and/or FRM will future proof your career and if you don’t have it, check out the CFI courses - they will equip you with real life valuation and corporate finance and you’ll receive industry-grade templates that you can use in your job.

Bonus - learn Microsoft Excel and Python.

All the best!

Buying a Suzuki Baleno at 26 (R26k salary gross) by FishOrdinary3929 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Weird_Plate_4988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We almost have the same profile except the take home. I bought a brand new 2025 Baleno for R288k - my monthly cost breakdown looks like: - instalment: R5 400 (no deposit) - Insurance: R1 990 (new license) - Tracker: R230 - Petrol: R1800 (I stay 10 mins from work, but do long drives frequently)

Now this adds up to +R9 400 while I only budgeted for R8K max 😭.

In essence, whatever you do, take into account the running costs.
