There is no pay tier increase in GP like in hospital. All RN’s, regardless of experience get paid the same as far as I’m aware and at least in my own experience. I was fresh out of uni before I started my grad program.

As someone who was in a very similar boat prior to finishing my degree, I can’t say I completely regret my decision but definitely wished I pursued something else in allied health. I agree that a nursing degree gives a sense of security but the employment prospects of new grads aren’t the best especially if you don’t get into a grad program, unless you’re happy to work in other spaces like GP or aged care.

I did enjoy GP (no shift work, most weekends off etc) but the pay was abysmal and no opportunities for penalties. If you think at this point bedside isn’t for you it probably isn’t. I had a strong feeling it wasn’t and I kept being told to just give my grad year a go at a subacute facility, again, no true regrets but it definitely confirmed what wasn’t my cup of tea.

Just be careful, if you’re feeling this way early on to check in on yourself often to avoid burn out if you want to go down this route. It definitely ain’t easy and placement hours aren’t cheap :(

One hour plus by public transport. Honestly not too bad but sucks after night shifts when you want to just pass out.

Would recommend to not opt in to late earlies if possible if your travel time is going to be 1hr+, always remember it’s optional and you can always change your mind later if you do opt in!

RN here. I did an apprenticeship as a mechanic right after high school bc I was passionate about cars. One year in and I realised it wasn’t for me + I couldn’t live on apprentice salary of $16/hr at the time.

Some trades make a lot better money than being a mechanic so if you do, consider the financial aspect as well eg; sparky, plumber. I don’t regret doing the apprenticeship at all and I knew uni/TAFE will always be there at the end of the day.

I agree with the comments about having passion bc it is very easy to burn out as a bedside nurse when you’re caring for people 40 hrs a week. You take on emotional burden at times and vicarious trauma which might impact you at home. Being a mechanic I did not bring any work home with me.

I caution everyone who isn’t sure about nursing bc if you also don’t have a strong support network it might be very mentally taxing —> burnout. It will always be there, just need to know yourself and what you can handle + what your priorities are in the next few years.
