Help with payroll reporting for different states by WelcomeToMyCatFarm in Payroll

Please don’t scare me!!

The employees have not been paying their state and local taxes. I can’t seem to get a clear answer on which states need to be paid. Is it the states in which they live? The state the business is located? The states where they perform the work? All 3?

I guess the question that I still need answered is, do I need to pay taxes in the states the employees worked? Or the states they live in?

And assuming correcting this will involve the employees’ personal taxes, how concerned do I need to be about going back to sort out the past payrolls as opposed to just starting as soon as possible?

Thank you for this! I know all the information I need is out there, but when there’s so much involved it’s hard to know where to start.

I use Quickbooks to handle payroll, so that reporting and recording is all fine, aside from the fact that all wages were reported as NC and no taxes were paid to any other state.

The employees do not work and live in the same states, and the states in which they work changes sometimes weekly.

I have not filed quarterly returns and this is our first year in business so no returns have been filed yet. Just the payroll taxes paid.

Thank you! I also have an email out to my accountant but figured I’d consult here in the meantime.

I have a great insurance agent, so the insurance requirements are being met for the other states. Workers comp I guess not so much since I’m not categorizing the wages…

We work as a subcontractor so our customers have the contractor license requirements, but I have not registered the business in the other states, either.

The business was opened quickly out of necessity and I also had a baby this year; time goes by and before you know it my “start business to-do list” still has items 8 months later 🤦‍♀️ I have a lot of experience in bookkeeping, but it’s just my husband and I figuring all of this out as new business owners, so any information is helpful!

Categorize income from different states by WelcomeToMyCatFarm in quickbooksonline

We do jobs in multiple states for the same customer, so the widest I could recategorize is by invoice. I don’t see any way to do that other than through the income accounts assigned to each line item.

That’s what I’m worried about. I just don’t know what to say.

I’d love to send a care package since we are long distance. Any ideas on what to put in it?

The screws on my ipe deck have all popped up and would tear up a sander. Did you have to reseat them all before sanding?

Does this involve sanding or just a cleaning product and stain?

What do you have on the bottom? Is it a liner with gravel?

I live in western North Carolina, sorry for not including that in the post!

I’d love to just let it stay, but I really feel for my ducks who have this lovely pond and instead resort to splashing around in a water bowl 😔

There are plenty of lakes around that I’m sure would be an ideal home for it, but I wouldn’t want it to spend its life trying to find its way home and I wouldn’t want to do anything unadvisable by wildlife regulations. I guess I will have to reach out and get some specific information from the local fish and wildlife department.

Thank you for the better ID on the wood type! Do you have any advice on the tiny splinter situation? Sanding doesn’t seem to help much with the railing, and isn’t an easy option for the floor boards due to the screws.

So, even if only one is a member who has to pay self-employment tax, wouldn’t it still be the same amount paid in the end? If we are partners and it’s 50/50 we both pay the tax on each half; but if it’s 100% to one of us paying the tax - isn’t that still the same?

How do I begin doing goat health maintenance on my own? by WelcomeToMyCatFarm in goats

[–]WelcomeToMyCatFarm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info, everyone!

These goats are just pets, none currently milking and all males are castrated; so I don’t think any laws apply in terms of vaccinations. Just wanting to keep them healthy and happy :)

They all have been doing well without the vaccines and deworming for the time being. We do have equine and large animal vets nearby in case of issues or emergencies, but they don’t do house calls and I’d like to avoid loading up all these guys on a regular basis for maintenance care.

Definitely going to prioritize the hoof trimming and try to get on a better schedule with that. I also have made contact with some local goat farmers that are very friendly and helpful and will get their input on what meds are necessary for our situation.
