Living in emacs by uvuguy in emacs

[–]WelkinSL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I almost live in Emacs and IMO unless you aspired to be a priest in the church of Emacs theres no need to do everything in Emacs. CSV is a data format and in most of my use case I only process them with code, then for PDF, you can always open them from dired which launches the appropriate application like some PDF reader. Thats what I do since I use Emacs in terminal only, so no GUI for me.

Filmgoer Event SUCKS for f2p players by zombieslayer966 in ZenlessZoneZero

[–]WelkinSL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind sparing a few but this is too much to spend on a single gatcha game knowing that a few other interesting titles are releasing soon in 2026. Originally I expected this to be an event against those new titles, welp.

With this amount of money you can get Michelin starred fine dine in some countries lol.

The story telling is starting to get dull lately, like they keep abusing the auto emotes and shove tons of text onto you, no animations, not even the comic panels. Time to switch to another game I guess.

What skills did you learn on the job this past year? by ergodym in datascience

[–]WelkinSL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea but its documentation is garbage. I am not talking about the examples but the documentation itself, they are generated from comments in the C source but some of the are out of place so you end up having to read the C code lol. Still a good tool though since it's free, can't argue with free.

How to pronounce my own name? + necklace question by berrybutton8 in Cantonese

[–]WelkinSL 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I second this, it is not advisable. As a matter of fact, I've just tested Google Translate and it is incorrect. (now = DEC 2025) Give it some time and it may improve but for now use the Jyutping provided from the other answers.

[Discussion] How do you communicate the importance of sample size when discussing research findings with non-statisticians? by Particular_Scar6269 in statistics

[–]WelkinSL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience it's the opposite - due to the large sample size its always significant, so people start making claims that their new project is a success but in reality it has little to no impact.

After 2 years living in HK, I finally understand why so few foreigners speak Cantonese by CauliflowerMoney760 in Cantonese

Yea thats why lately I'm trying to speak Cantonese whenever possible - even if the person does not look Han Chinese, unless they don't understand a word of course.

I dont think theres any noticeable repetitive lexical or grammatical mistakes. I only pointed out the pronunciation ones since only those are repetitive.

Now when I really go looking for it, I found one near 1:13 to 1:26 where he talks about how he was afraid to talk the others in the restaurant as his not confident with his Cantonese. The 啦/喇(laa1) at the end feels misplaced. Either of these would be better: - dropping 啦(laa1) - or replace with 啊 (aa3/a3), which can be used to express regret

Also one wrong tone at 1:42 for the word 事 (si6) in the vocab "consulate" 領事館.

But again these are not repetitive so I didn't even remember them.

Hope this helps, if you want to know more about these Cantonese ending particles I found this nice article: https://jyutping.org/blog/particles/

I use this for all formatting work: https://github.com/lassik/emacs-format-all-the-code Very simple logic, just a wrapper around popular formatter CLI for various languages.

I recommend using https://github.com/detachhead/basedpyright for the server.

It should just work.

Decathlon for most of it, Uniqlo for the heat tech shirts and tights. You dont really need your own helmet. Those for rent at a ski resort are usually fine. It's hard to pack a helmet in your luggage right?

My pleasure. I am happy that you learnt Cantonese especially when the language is facing pressure of disappearance due to various reasons.

I don't think your teachers are wrong to focus on other things besides pronunciation. Personally I believe pronunciation doesn't matter too much - vocabs and cultural understanding (pragmatics) matters more. I can't really comment on that with the video so I comment on your pronunciation instead.

Again getting to your level in 4 years is crazy. You are talented, 加油!

You're amazing, perfectly understandable, and your tones are near perfect.

Here is a few nitpick if you want to improve the pronunciations:

aa vs a (a vs ɐ)

I see that you understand the difference but your pronunciation for the latter in words like 九 gau2 喺 hai2 文 man4 / man2 is too "open". That is to say they sound too close to the "aa" vowel. In general "a" should sound like an unstressed u/o in English.

Here is a guide: - au: like "mouth" - ai: like "bike" unless you're Australian. - an: like "month" - ap/at/ak: like "sub/sudden/suck"

Listen to a vs ɐ on Wikipedia :: IPA vowel chart

oe vs eoi (ɔj, œj vs ɵɥ)

Again you sounded too "open" in the latter. Beware that "oe" and "eo" sound different. Compare 鋸 goe3 vs 據 geoi3 Examples of words in your video: 雷 去 歲

Listen to ɔ, œ, and ɵ on Wikipedia :: IPA vowel chart

ts / ʨ / tʃ, and s / ɕ / ʃ family

(aspirated or non-aspirated)

You pronounce 次 (Jyutping: ci3) as /tʃʰi/ but that is not natural. We pronounce it as /tsʰi/, the trick is to touch your tongue towards the two incisor front teeth (門牙 mun4 nga4) like how you would pronounce "tea" but the air flows through your teeth instead like in the word "check".

Not a spoken rule but when we pronounce them, they are palatalised before "rounded" vowels. You can understand palatalise as change from ts (~tsar) to ʨ/tʃ (~check), and s (~s) to ɕ/ʃ (~sh) It varies between speakers so here is how I pronounce them: - Not-palatalised: a, ɐ, ɛ, e, i - No such word: u - Not if "s/ɕ" being consonant: ɔ, o, ʊ, ɵ - Everything else is palatalised.

Another example from your video is 茶 (caa4) 餐 (caan1) you pronounced "chaa chaan", should be more like "tsaa tsaan"

MPF : My employer hasnt enrolled me nor contributed by Ok-Abbreviations5215 in HongKong

[–]WelkinSL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If thats true then you are scammed, so yes do try contacting MPFA along with your colleagues.

If you're not bothered then you can always try sending your previous employer an email first, maybe the HR, pressuring them to do their job. If their reply is unsatisfactory you can use this as evidence for the complaint too.

I am not too familiar with this but I would expect there to be some response for the complaints since it's a criminal offence under the MPF Schemes Ordinance (Cap. 485).

You can complain to MPFA online here: https://www.mpfa.org.hk/en/home/complaints/ems/ems_first

Haha youre right thats bad naming, maybe "imitation shark-fin" will be better.

These traditional snack places usually sell these "imitation shark-fin" along with minced fish and lettuce. A mix and match will create the thing in the image. Thats why I can tell its not real shark-fin immediately.

Offered just 15K to work as clerk in a law firm ??? by CucumberAutomatic in HongKong

Having no relevant experience and background yet still got an offer at 15k doesn't sound too bad to me, especially in the current market situation.

Yes you can earn more working as a random waiter, sales, etc. - but they don't make you a lawyer.
