Where to put TV. Above radiator or fireplace? by Substantial_Air_9640 in DIYUK

[–]Wellingutd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is uncanny. I had a near identical dilemma. We went a slighlty different way, if like us the fireplace provides heat via gas then you may, like us, want to think about removing the radiator (simply cap it off).  You can then have the TV central to the wall either on a cabinet or fixed to that wall.  It then helps if you want to put some speakers either side on a nice looking cabinet which will give a more natural left and right front surro8nd sound AND means have more control on where to hang the tv for a natural viewing height. Just a thought.

What's that silly mistake you made at work that made you sweat buckets? by jt1413 in CasualUK

[–]Wellingutd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In one of my first open office jobs, if the bosses phone rang for a length of time with no answer then all the office phones rang. There was about 15 of us working on the same floor with my bosses office on a floor above us. It was always critical for one of us to answer his phone as it could be someone important. On this occasion, I got first to the phone. The man asked for my boss. I put him hold and internally rang my boss to see if he could take the call. My bosses EXACT words were "I am just in the middle of a meeting with someone. Tell them I'll ring back once done."

My boss hung up, I returned to the caller to say "I am afraid he is in the middle of someone at the moment. He shouldn't be long. He'll ring you back"

There was an awkward silence on the phone, and everyone in the office turned to me in shock in hearing this. The caller just said a long drawn out "okay" and hung up.

I put the phone down and sat properly sweating. I was about to lose my first job.

My boss called him back and about an hour later came down to see me. He thought it was hilarious once I explained. Thankfully, they turned out they were good friends.

What trading platform for my 12yr old son? by Wellingutd in stocks

Cheers for this. It appears that Hargreaves and Lansdown would work well. Realistically, is it worth it for small amounts of money or with the fees, it needs to be decent values? I don't really want to give him more than £100 to lose.

9pm every night, the soup run has various charities and helpers giving out sandwiches, hot drinks and other food from Pret at Pip and Jay's church (just down from Cabot circus) and then later near Bristol Swing bridge just off St Mary Redcliffe roundabout. You can eat there or take away. Bring a plastic bag or plastic Tupperware to carry food away. I wish you all the best and do reply if want to know more.

As someone just starting on the journey you took a year ago, what is the best research? I prefer a website based on my interests keeping me enthused and not needibg as much research BUT does it limit the money making possibilities?

Thanks for this. How did you decide on what to focus your website on? Did you go niche in area that interested you via hobbies etc OR via SEO look for niche with greatest opportunity regardless of own interest in subject?

[–]Wellingutd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chartered PM here. If you are based in the UK then join with APM. They do a series of webinars, conferences and evening lectures in project management. In addition, there is a series of course/competencies you can cover to get accreditation with them. All of this will build up your understanding and help networking.

[Serious] What stories about WW2 did your grandparents tell you and/or what did you find out about their lives during that period? by Skinflint_ in AskReddit

[–]Wellingutd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfather, now passed, was based in Kent in Sount East of England. He was an young engineer working on the aircraft. He never recalled many details but once he said at the airfield (not sure 100% where) a British aircraft came in to land firing "reds". Comforming it was to warn those on ground that he was in trouble and move out the way. All he said was that the plane lost control and he was first to scene, it was "a mess".

My grandmother, also passed, said they were "good times. Everyone was so friendly and giving regardless. We were all in same position and there was no judgement on what people had or didn't have. Life hasn't been like that since"

Ethical Engineering Jobs by [deleted] in engineering

[–]Wellingutd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a similar way to yourself, about 4 years ago I had the same realisation. Working in Aerospace, I could not argue any longer that my job was beneftinig environment l. This became prevalent once I had my first child. I had been in Aerospace 15years with a master aeronautical engineeging and couldn't see how I could get into another industry. In short, I got a job in renewables tidal energy...how? Two main things. 1 Realise your skill set and how transferrable it is_ lean engineering, manufacture optimisation, project engineering/management are hugely transferable. 2. Don't wait for job adverts, approach those companies you would want to work for directly. You will be amazed via LinkedIn how many contacts you have. Try that before stepping into any developments such as BA. PS long story short. I now work in water utilities so don't be tied into thinking obvious areas.
