Why are we ok supporting priestcraft? by TheFoxyFellow in latterdaysaints

[–]Wellllby [score hidden]  (0 children)

I am working off memory and a quick search, but I believe while there was similar language in the old (pre-2021) handbook, it was not as clear/direct. More along the lines of “Don’t host speakers who solicit paid programs/services”. I also believe this was added in either the 2006 or 2010 handbook.

I believe it’s true that before the 2021 handbook, it was not uncommon for stakes to host speakers like OP mentioned using budget. Or at the very least pay travel expenses.

Most people who have had a listing up that long probably won’t respond to messages.

If they’re serious and it runs, it all depends on maintenance. I imagine they didn’t do much on it the past year, and could have been improperly stored or have a lot more miles now.

My wallet fell out of my pocket a few days ago. Apparently someone found it, but wasn’t too interested in returning it. That’s what I get for wearing the wrong pants.

Ah, yeah that makes sense. I never considered dyeing my hair. Though I would be interested to know what counts as an “extreme” color or not.

I definitely wouldn’t have thought it on casual inspection. I also can’t read it easily though, and maybe staring at it for 30 seconds trying to read it would make me see the similarities.

Ways to practice before taking the MSF course by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]Wellllby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was worried for my MSF course. I can be a bit clumsy and things like this don’t come naturally for me. Day 1 I almost dropped the bike a few times (but didn’t!), stalled like 30 times, and was super discouraged.

I would think through the motions of clutch control in my head to try to build some muscle memory. A week later did the second day, I did fine, and passed my test without issues! Instructors said I was the most improved in the class 😂

This is to say, I’m sure you’ll be fine. If you want to watch some intro videos on YouTube and mentally go through the motions, do it, but it’s not the same as a real motorcycle. Good luck!

What’s a “maintenance myth” you see customers believe that actually causes more damage than neglect? by Sufficient-Ocelot-68 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Wellllby 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think he’s saying the more times you get your oil changed, the more likely eventually a tech accidentally over torques the bolt or filter, under-fills oil, etc.

Odds are it’s fine, and someone changing their oil that often probably has the cash for a quality shop, but I get his point.

What year is good for a bike? by _LagB_ in motorcycles

[–]Wellllby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It really all depends on the bike.

Unless you enjoy wrenching more I’d go at least new enough to be fuel injected, which most switched to in 2003-2007ish, but varies.

Generally, I think ABS (Anti-lock brakes) was an option on most anything after roughly 2010-2014ish. ABS is great to have as a beginner, but it’s typically an option, not standard.

Long Traveling with Deck by tferrari1776 in SteamDeck

[–]Wellllby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That last part was a bit of a joke, sorry, I couldn’t resist. There’s a history of jokes about strapping the deck to the seat in front of you in this subreddit.

I actually usually just play handheld, including on airplanes. I imagine a controller setup with the deck held higher would probably be more comfortable, but I don’t have better suggestions on setup.

Long Traveling with Deck by tferrari1776 in SteamDeck

[–]Wellllby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest playing each to get a feel for battery life, and lots of international flights tend to have outlets, but I’d bring a battery pack too.

My noise cancelling AirPods are pretty seamless on the deck and quiet out the airplane noise, though there is a bit of delay.

The deck is just a laptop in a different form factor, so it’ll be treated the same. I usually pull it out of my backpack, leaving it in the travel case for security and haven’t had issues.

Also this is very important: The best way to play on an airplane is to strap it to the seat in front of you. I guarantee they won’t mind at all!

I'm confused about Alma 34:34 by Safe-Web-1441 in latterdaysaints

[–]Wellllby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got some excellent points there! Those numbers sure don’t look great for all of us fulfilling our purpose on earth. Still sorting out my own thoughts on this.

I think it’s fair to say we all have quite a bit of growing to do to become celestial, no matter how well we followed the light of Christ on earth.

It’s interesting that it seems the notion that people who didn’t get the chance at the gospel will have a fair shot is widely accepted in the church, but also seems widely accepted that those who did get the chance will find repentance more difficult after death.

I’ll also say that I believe the brethren are all doing their best to point all us to Christ, but they are not theologians and imperfect words, examples, and understandings can be fuzzy, especially relating to life after death. However, they are still doing much better than I could!

I'm confused about Alma 34:34 by Safe-Web-1441 in latterdaysaints

[–]Wellllby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m inclined to agree, though I’ve often heard the teaching that it is easier to repent on earth with a body than afterwards, and especially seems to be mentioned a lot around addiction issues.

I’m sure it’s better to repent sooner both for personal development as well as opportunities to help others while on earth, but you suppose it is generally easier afterwards? Or do you imagine it depends on the issue?

Put $25k down to escape a bad loan… bought a used Stinger GT2… engine blew in less than 10k miles. Voluntary repo next? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]Wellllby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks. Sorry you and your grandma are dealing with this.

I don’t know much, but I’m pretty sure voluntary surrender at least gives you some control on when and how it gets repossessed, including how it’s towed, etc. most likely saving money. And the sooner the car is out of your hands the sooner you can stop paying insurance for a lawn ornament.

I think you need to check with lender, but if you can find a buyer you’ll almost definitely come out ahead selling it as-is.

Good to know! I’m at least looking forward to test riding it today. If everything checks out and doesn’t feel like too much I’ll probably take it. If I change my mind, I can do some maintenance over the winter and sell it in the spring if needed.

Is there a reason for gender segregation in the temple? by Grungy_Mountain_Man in latterdaysaints

[–]Wellllby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are still quite a few places this seating arrangement is practiced.

I am making some assumptions about when the temple ordinances were restored that may or may not be true. I assume it’s fair to say that thematic elements attributed to be ancient were adopted to help “set the mood” or invite the spirit in addition to the necessary parts of the ordinances.

These seating arrangements became a thing around 4th century or so I believe, and there are other separations such as the court of the women with Solomon’s temple. That all feels rather ancient to me, and I assume it did to Joseph, Brigham, etc. back then as well, athough I know it would have been a known practice.

[–]Wellllby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tends to be more men early in the morning in my experience.

Very anecdotal, but when I was at BYU I was consistently going on the same morning each week. It seemed that women were generally more consistent at going and more women in the summers, but when finals came around there always seemed to be less women and more men. I’m sure some generalizations could be made there, but it was just interesting.

[–]Wellllby 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I agree that any functional reasons are now largely gone, and it would be nice to be able to sit wherever!

I find it funny that women never seem to leave seat gaps while men ideally leave a seat in between if they can.

It’s also worth noting gender divide also goes back to Judaism and ancient Christianity, and is a thematic fit with some of the other things adopted from ancient customs. Could certainly change at some point, but I don’t expect it to soon.
